As can be heard about 14 minutes in, the politicians ultimate goal for the Common Market was a United States of Europe. So they knew it even in 1962, eleven years before we in the UK joined.

With regard to 'ever closer union', the moulding of individual nations into a mega state is a frightening prospect.
