- The US Department of Defense has recently announced the official name for the first light tank in nearly four decades. This combat vehicle was previously referred to as the Mobile Protected Fire Power (MPFV). On June 9, 2023, which coincided with the US Army's birthday, the presentation ceremony for the tank was held. The combat vehicle was given the name M10 Booker in honor of two distinguished members of the US Army. The tank's name, M10 Booker, pays tribute to two individuals: Private Robert Booker, who lost his life in Tunisia in 1943, and Staff Sergeant Stevon Booker, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Iraq War in 2003. The chosen designation also draws inspiration from the Gun Motor Carriage M10, an anti-tank artillery vehicle used during World War II. The primary purpose of the M10 Booker is to bridge the firepower disparity between the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle and the M1 Abrams main battle tank. It is officially categorized as an infantry support vehicle, serving a crucial role in supporting ground troops during combat operations. General Dynamics Land Systems is the manufacturer of the M10 Booker. They were granted a contract worth $1.1 billion to manufacture 96 light tanks, with deliveries scheduled to commence later this year. The overall program entails the production of 504 vehicles, amounting to an estimated value of around $6 billion. The approximate cost per light tank is nearly $13 million.
The last tank in the video isn’t the M10 Booker, its the tank it was competing against in the MPF program.
