  • "It's hell for students," says Mandy Lokko, a PhD student at McGill University, about the struggle to keep up with expenses in Montreal as a student. The city has seen a 20 per cent rise in rent in just the last two years alone. Felisha Adam reports.

    When I was a student in Geneva, 🇨🇭 part of the requirement of being eligible to study in Geneva is having the finance yourself to do so for the whole year. Student permit will not be issued if you can’t afford school fees and living expenses (rent+food) when students apply.
    I believe this applies to most universities in Europe.
    Shouldn’t this be the case for students here as well?

      It's the same for Canada's study permits but when Canadian themselves can't afford to go to Canadian schools we start having a problem.

      @@HalifaxComputersRepair Do you mean “YOU ARE not in Europe lol“? and “This IS Canada crazy lol”?
      These are basic admission/study permit requirements.
      Why would any country want to bring in international students who can’t afford their own school fees and living expenses (barring exceptional students on scholarships/grants). If Canada does not require students to proof that they are able to cover all study and living expenses then everybody who can’t afford but wants to come to Canada can just simply come 🤷🏻‍♀️
      Are students here to study or work?

      @plutoniusis 9 місяців тому +1

      You wrong on that, Geneva is in Switzerland , in most of Europe studies have nothing to do with affordability but if you want to study is about wisdom, not a privilege.

      The cost of living heightened exponentially, that’s how come this issue came about. If not, the student could afford. Also, Quebec is very different for anglophones. No French,no work, a bill was passed and it’s made things even more difficult. So please don’t be insensitive; this is Canada.

    It's not just students. It's most Canadians from all walks of life. Under Justin Trudeau, in the last 8 years, housing prices have gone up by 80%. To make matters worse, Home construction is down 25% year to year. The builders blame high permit costs and the carbon tax driving up cost of building so much that it doesn't make financial sense to build in Canada at a faster rate. A fun fact is in BC 40% of your home cost when building is just building paperwork, fees, and red tape.

      There’s people with PhDs pouring coffee at Tim Hortons. That’s how hard it’s gotten to find work under Trudeau’s government. Education has nothing to do with finding work these days, as no one will hire you if you have no experience, which is very common for students fresh out of university

    students? What about people who couldn’t even take out a student loan and have to work 60 hrs a week for 15$ an hour. I did for almost ten years. This country has too many immigrants and too little housing.

    I feel bad for young people today. Big chunk of youth ruined by Covid. Internet nonsense frying their brains. No chance to own a home. Inflation rocketing. AI looming. Not just Montreal. Many hard working Canadians are struggling to pay bills, especially having to shell out that extra 7-900 dollars to pay interests, extra 1-300 in utilities, vechicle insurance, and paying gas to get to work. Bills are taking a BIG huge chunks of your living expenses. At the end you really have nothing left to pay and than end up having to use your cc to pay bills. Rich can get rich but taking money away from working is really shoring themselves in the foot.
    Can this country turn around under PP? And how long do we need Trudeau to be in power for?

No one will hire someone without relevent experience, I have no friends, barely 200 dollars to my name and havent been able to afford to live on my own....ever. I lost everything important to me. The genuine only option I have to stop the burden of being a failure is ending my own life. Ive got nothing to live for.
