When I was a teenager back in the 80's, I was just getting into listening to rock music after a constant deluge of country music from my parents. I could never understand why he was so popular as a singer. He wrote great stuff but should've been kept away from microphones, in my opinion.
His song, Chimes of Freedom, was my favorite for a brief time. Then I read THE MAYOR OF MACDOUGAL STREET the biography of Dave Van Ronk, the guy Dylan stole most of the song from. Van Ronk explains his grandmother sang Chimes of Trinity for little Dave when he was a kid. Dylan heard Dave sing it at a coffee house years later and got Van Ronk to play it for him a "few more times". Later Dylan recorded it with modestly changed lyrics. On hearing Dyaln's version, Van Ronk said "I think my grandmother did it better."
He looks like a drunk homeless dude that someone quickly ushered in off the street; mistaking him for someone 'relevant.' He's then handed a set of headphones and told to "Go stand over there!" Not really knowing where he is, or what is actually going on, he begins to mumble incoherently into the microphone. Brilliant! 🙄

Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, no even comes close. Springsteen maybe, but not in terms of quantity. Dylans problem is that he should have stop performing, or at least singing, in the early '80s. He's actually not a bad guitarist, at least in terms of rythm guitar. He should have had others sing his songs, while he played guitar and did back- up vocals. I think I finally figured out the enigma of Dylan, what made him so brilliant and mysterious and weird. He seems to be auristic. Kinda of like David Byrne. Autistic people can be brilliant, but they don't realize how they are coming off to other people; that is, they live in their own world.

Not being a personal fan is one thing and I certainly don't claim to be so but I sincerely believe that any mainstream artist that attains an influential point whereby you do not have to be a foaming fan but you need to show some degree of respect for their impact and influence.

@@ConradWalsh Well, trite example as it be but I'm reminded of Noel Gallagher from Oasis referring to Phil Collins as an 'absolute rubbish artist'. Poor Noel just made a fool of himself. Personally speaking I canthink of the likes of Elton John, Lionel Richie, and let's say Cat Stevens? Am I a fan? Nope. Respect nonetheless? Yes, the body of work is objectively admirable. I just don't care for it.

The fact that an artist sells a shitload of records is a matter of FACT :- but whether an individual thinks that artist is any good or not is a purely a matter of OPINION. Personally, I'm rather inclined to think that Gallagher calling Phil Collins 'absolute rubbish' is precisely like the pot calling the kettle black.
Bob Dylan has more talent than every other artist in that room put together. It’s just his talent is with writing, not singing.

Dillon's had 2 interesting songs, "Lay Lady, Lay" & "Everybody Must Get Stoned. Bob's son, Jacob (?) from The Wallflowers looks and sings better. I'm listening as I'm losting and Bob's voice is more annoying than playing flutophones. He's just awful.
