Standard 1 math is the basic course in NSW, the most advanced high school math course is math extension 2
It basically covers mainly things that students should have covered by year 10. They are things that people should know. Unfortunately I’ve heard that the raw score is 30%. It really is painful for people who need basic maths, for example builders doing quotes, who have trouble with things like areas.
Yea it goes standard 1, standard 2, advanced, extension 1 (you take this at the same time as advanced) and extension 2 (only for year 12 students)

Back when I did Year 12 in NSW (1996) we had 2 Unit Maths, 3 Unit was more advanced and 4 Unit was the highest level. There were two levels below 2 Unit but I can't remember what they were. If you did 4 Unit you did the 2 and 3 Unit classes. 2 was the base with 3&4 as addons. I wonder if much of the content has changed?

This is the most basic maths standard that kids can take in NSW. That is, the kids who don’t do well at, or have no need for difficult maths.

Please take the VCE Exams like the Mathematical Methods 3/4 exam and the Specialist Mathematics 3/4 exam; they’re the tough ones.

@@Saaaammmm to be honest I think the problem is the quality of maths teaching in Australia. Especially in earlier years. Smart people graduate from school thinking maths is about committing arbitrary processes to memory by rote, leather than the application of logic and reasoning, or creative problem solving. They have this belief because of the way maths was taught to them.

In 1982 I didn't pass this one, but now I'm a senior electrical engineer, managing a diverse team for a major organisation in Canberra.
For anyone doubting themselves (imposter syndrome?) it's never too late to learn & realise your potential; particularly if you're AuDHD like me.

As a father of two children, one of which is about to sit this standard maths exam (the other will do the advanced version), I couldn’t agree more that the real life practicality of the questions shines through. Despite the apparent simplicity of this lower level exam, I feel there are (sadly) many adults that lack these life skills. Great video. Thanks 🙏

Hi Tom. Nicely done. This paper is the lowest level of (effectively) 6 levels. Your deduction was correct, this paper is for students who are not undertaking tertiary studies, and insufficient for vocational/post-secondary education in trades or occupations requiring more than minimal mathematics. By the way, did you notice a hint of interstate rivalry in Q15? Hint: Which state's capital city is missing!
As a matter of background all NSW high school maths students are expected to be proficient in the use of an approved calculator, (usually a Casio fx..AU model). Also students are usually encouraged to look at the end of the paper to use a supplied formula sheet (quite short for this exam, but four pages for more advanced).
When I first started coaching NSW HSC students after school in mathematics, I was very surprised by the variety (and complexity of more advanced papers) of the discrete mathematics as in my high school, undergraduate and postgraduate study I only came across PERT/CPM networks for use in project management.
Yeah, no Melbourne (but as another city of rivalry, ie Adelaide vs Melbourne re Aussie Rules Football, etc), no big deal. But I was perplexed that the flights to various capital cities wasn't actually "real world". Yet, not having Melbourne could mess that up. It wasn't long ago that we couldn't fly from Adelaide to Hobart (well Tasmania in general), and had to fly from Melbourne... although Launceston was the place I had to fly to when on a tourist bus trip around Tasmania, starting & finishing at the top of the island state.
I assume it was due to Qantas cutting their number of domestic flights in favour of long haul international :P
standard 1 is the lowest level of maths offered in NSW. standard 2, advanced, extension 1, and extension 2 are all courses in NSW more difficult than standard 1, as an extension 2 student, I would love to see you attempt a past exam, the last question is always notoriously difficult.
Please try either the Advanced paper or Extension 2 for this Australian HSC math paper!
*NSW, all the other states have different exams and different names, in qld, we call it the Methods, General, or Specialist paper

@@davidliu3463 definitely extension 2, though it's really just a tiny amount of content with extremely unfair questions at times and you are allocated like 3 minutes to solve them.
Please try VCE 2023 Math Specialists Exam, this is the hardest Math exam in all of Australia. The one you completed was standard - basic math!

They are the same thing - they just have different names in different states.
Some Australian schools have the International Baccalaureate, so there is a more difficult exam.

Great job on that exam! I loved the practicality of the questions in the exam s well. All math exam papers at the end of high school level education should be like that, especially if one is not going to university afterwards. That exam shows students things that could actually come up in their life and that they may need to work out for themselves. That exam was the easiest one I've seen you do.
Interesting choice, I would have thought you'd have a go at the extension 1 or 2 papers; nonetheless, still great to see Australia being represented in this channel!
I did the australian NSW HSC advanced maths exam. I was convinced (as so many others are) that advanced maths would open so many more opportunities for me. Advanced maths subjects and higher did not have the same practical applications of maths as standard did.
Im now studying Marine Biology and have rarely come across basic maths in my degree. I woe the loss of practical maths i never learnt. So many life lessons and everyday math concepts i was never taught :(
Of course i have the ability to figure these things out for myself, but i would have greatly appreciated having been introduced to these topics during school

I’m currently in high school in South Australia, would love to see you have a go at the 2023 Stage 2 Specialist Maths exam. It’s our hardest maths here and has some vector calculus questions which I hear are quite difficult.
Would highly recommend checking out the specialist math exams from any state (preferably the 2021 Queensland exams cuz those are the ones I took).
They are the highest level of math currently offered to the average public high school student

HSC math extension 2 is the very hard one.
Would love to see you try the different levels of the Victorian (Australia) exams. We have three levels in VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education).
General Maths is your base level, Maths Methods is slightly more complex and Specialist Maths is the most complex taught in our curriculum.

Wow, this was so different to my "Maths 1S" exam for Matric (Matriculation) in South Australia in 1982.
I was waiting for Calculus and other such things. That's the stand-out in my memory from Matric Maths - ie Calculus, with equations taking columns & columns of Maths workings, plus a 4-quadrant graph to work out. I shudder at the memory, and never understood the reason for imaginary minus quadrants of a graph. It never made sense to me (although I was good at the workings out), but I was never going to go to university at the time... although I did end up going to uni 20yrs later, but not for Maths. Having said that, in the primary school teacher training, I did have to re-learn primary school maths as a compulsory subject, and it's amazing how much I needed a brush-up, and yet how much had advanced from my time in primary school in the 1970's.
Anyway, from memory, I've never seen such a real-world Maths exam like this one before. It's definitely not at all like doing Calculus with imaginary numbers and negative quadrants on a graph.

Hey Tom, it would be fun to take the Dutch final exams for secondary school. We have a triple-layed school system based on academic level, and four different kinds of maths (A to D), each for a different purpose:
- A: mostly statistics, for the economics and biochemistry specialising students
- B: calculus/trigonometry (things like that), for the tech specialising students
- C: mix, but simpler than anything else, for the culture specialising students
- D: mix, but comparable to further maths, for the maths nerds (B required to take as well)
(D doesn't have national exams now that I think about it, but it's still fun to take)

Standard 1 is the lowest level of math someone can do
just passing, but as someone who, in decades past, did the NSW advanced and extension 1 and 2.. Wow, I didn't realise how easy standard math was.(if you do do advanced you do it instead of standard).. this honestly felt like maths done in junior years (some slightly more difficult stuff in there but still very basic)
I'd love to know how significant it would be for university access (atar these days) between standard and advanced because if I was a kid not taking extensions I think I may stick with standard and ace it rather than risk losing a few on advanced. (though I presume a lot has changed since I did this stuff)
I don't think this is the equivalent of what maths standard used to be. They've changed the system and the current standard level is actually what used to be known as general maths.
pretty sure this course isnt eligible for getting an atar, as I think you need to take at minimum maths standard 2. But yea maths standard is mostly built off of year 7 - year 9 maths and doesnt really go too much beyond that (they do stuff like networks which people always joked 4u students couldnt do, as we were never taught it).
@@vezei1857There’s a slideshow titled “HSC Mathematics Standard 1: Information for students”. It says that if you choose to take the optional exam by the end of the year, you can get it in your ATAR.
This information is current as of a few years ago, but most university courses requiring maths generally have mathematics advanced as a prerequisite. I don’t remember seeing one course requiring standard/general mathematics and the same goes for extension maths 1 & 2.
In High school in year 7 and 8 we were Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing USING Different GEOMETRIC SHAPES!
For Q20: Tukey's rule for outliers is any number outside (Q1-1.5*IQR , Q3+1.5*IQR). It is not the median +1.5*IQR.
Could you do a Singapore A level H2 math paper or O level A math paper.Their known to be rather challenging
I graduated two years ago and the SACE (South Australia) system does essentials (this test) then standard, then mathematical methods, and the top is specialists maths
exact same here in Queensland except standard is called general maths :)
@Tomrocksmaths This is the standard course, what was known pre 2001 as veggie maths (google NSW HSC veggie maths). Typically this level of maths was aimed for students not intending tertiary studies, hence why every question was applied. These students would typically (pre 2000) be going on to vocational studies (trade school) or straight into the work force, but still completing year 11 and year 12. NSW HSV Advanced 2 unit is typically what is the (previous) requirement for anyone doing any tertiary studies so would be approximate UK A levels, or Germany's Arbitur. 3 unit is for those going into STEM tertiary studies and 4 unit (extension 2) was for those with an advanced math interest. Comparing an exam that is basically ISCE3 (this) to exams that are ISCE4 is (GSE/Arbitur/AP/SAT). Its all very confusing now (post 2000), because there was a huge push to widen tertiary education, and it doesn't neatly align to any UK/US/EU model or system. I don't know of any schooling system that teaches calculus to hair dressers, laborers and truck drivers, and you haven't done any maths that would be on offer for students considering that. Its an interesting paper, because it is applied, and even with out complex pure algebra or calculus.
If you do HSC extension 2 you will run out of time. Eddy Woo seems to take double the allocated time, and has an offsider checking his answers.
Doing applied questions is interesting. I wonder if you have tried doing a few different Physics papers, to see if maths alone is enough to solve questions that exist in most physics papers.
My answer is: I’m glad I graduated high school in 1976. I still have my slide rule. Yes we used them. We were allowed by my senior year to take tests with calculators. I think the SATs allowed this also. My AP calc exam also.
Back in the now scarily far off days of the 1980’s, when I was finishing secondary school, Maths was split into Pure and Applied. Even then Applied Maths exam questions were presented as real world scenarios. Lessons at younger levels also often used a puzzle format, with solving various equations/trigonometric identities/etc. providing letters to solve an acrostic or the like. Every effort possible was always put in to engage students with Maths in as enjoyable a way as possible.

Would love to see you do the irish leaving cert Maths higher level exam paper 1 from last year 2023 it was on the news about how complex it was and students were not properly prepared for it u could take a look at paper 2 aswell
You need to do the Australian Victorian VCE maths methods exam. Way higher standard. Or the exam for specialist maths.
Please try VCE Specialist 3/4 or Methods 3/4, I suggest to 2023 methods exam and any year prior to 2023 for spec :)
Studnets are given a specific definition of outlier (along with IQR) and encouraged to draw box and whisper plots. .... the 1.5 x IQR was right and you came up with it!

I didn't see any comments on the Petrol vs EV question. Australian Statistics puts an average petrol car (avg in australia is commonly a small SUV) at 11L/100km the paper had 8.9L/100km. So petrol car cost more than suggested in this paper. The purchase price for petrol is pretty accurate (maybe a little low, depending where you are) for when the paper was set. As far as the EV is concerned, the stats is a bit harder to come by as they are so new. Most people if charging at home overnight could easily charge for 25c/kwh or less. If they had to use public charging (rapid on the motorway etc) could pay up to ~69c/kwh. Some public chargers (at shops/pubs etc) are as low as 25c/kwh but are slower, but still possible to not charge at home for this rate. As far as efficiency, the best I have found is an SUV EV being 17-22kwh/100km. The paper I think said 18kwh/100km so it is pretty good estimate but on the better side, just as they did on the petrol usage.

Ther's another exam set if you can get hold of it - the numeracy and literacy exams for prospective primary teachers in Australia.....So many failed but i found it fairly easy.

for Q19 you are supposed to solve the equation for x (with y as being 23)
You still get full marks on the outlier portion. If I were grading, I would award student full points, but would mention they kind of got lucky that it was still within their slightly modified application using IQR. But it doesn’t seem like the exact cutoff for where outliers occurs was part of the criteria
It would be lovely if you could work through a specialist maths and a maths methods paper. These papers have an emphasis on mental strategies for parts of the papers.
I have never been particularly good at maths. Passed Oxford O level. That is as good as it got. Can't believe I just sat and watched this entire video non stop. It dragged me back many years. You are the complete opposite to my last maths teacher at Grammar. He had been a Captain in the army in the second world war. Nearly all the teachers were ex officers in the services. My English teacher was a Colonel. Somehow I think your teaching style would be somewhat different. With less shouting and abuse.

the only problem with the plane flying direct from Sydney to perth - it flies south below Melbourne then across the Great Bight where as the plane from Perth to Sydney would fly further north of Melbourne. Roughtly about Adelaide it would fly in land.
So not if it is the same distance both ways.

there were some answers where working out wasn't fully there, or units of measurement were not present, which would take some marks off (knowing and remembering from my own experience as an Australian student)

This was easier than my final exam back in 1972
I used to take 4 unit Maths, which was the highest level of my school time in NSW.
So you were kind of right - last year only 5,285 students sat that paper. Compare that to the 31,394 students who sat standard 2 (a slightly harder paper, but still quite tame) and the approximately 19,000 students who sat one ore more of the advanced, extension 1 or extension 2 papers that year (in my opinion the extension papers can contain harder questions than A-level maths, although there is much less content)
Please do the VCE Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics exams. They're the challenging ones!

Wow when I did year 12 the HSC year, this test would've been done in year 9. Clearly the more "cough" remedial class.

Question 12 can’t be answered. When tiles are laid there’s a gap between them. Even though the gap is small, it adds up, and will affect the total number of tiles needed.
I guess they’re hoping that students don’t know how to lay tiles.
I would have marked that at 77/80. I would have given the mark for the question about the potential outlier (correctly identified as not an outlier using a reasonable test) but not the mark for giving features of the data rather than features of the graph.

To systematically find the shortest route between two given nodes in a network, you start by labelling the start location with 0, then iterate by: for each unlabelled node adjacent to at least one labelled node, find the minimum of (adjacent label plus distance along the connected edge) across all adjacent labelled nodes, find the minimum value across all those unlabelled nodes, and label that node with that value. That will systematically label each node with its minimum distance from the start node. Once you label the destination node, you know its shortest distance, and can backtrack to find the shortest path by iteratively looking for an adjacent node that is precisely the connecting distance closer to the start.
There is one detail I glossed over that's done in practice to speed things up, and that's to temporarily label each node with its current minimum value - that way, when you label a new node with its permanent label, you only need to look at its connections and apply or update temporary labels to its unlabelled neighbours before finding the minimum temporary label to make permanent rather than recalculating every time.
There's another modification that's commonly applied when you're not expecting to need to find shortest routes from the current start point to other destinations, and that's to add a heuristic value to each node that underestimates the distance from it to the destination in such a way that adjacent nodes' heuristic values always differ by less than the distance between them. Then, when you decide which node to label permanently, you choose the minimum of (shortest_distance_from_start + heuristic), meaning you bias toward nodes closer to your destination rather than wasting time on nodes that are too far away to possibly give a shorter path by the time they've connected back to the destination, even if they're closer to the start to begin with.
Applying that modification gives you the A* ("A star") algorithm, which is the standard default algorithm for route-planning (actual route-planning algorithms differ to take advantage of domain-specific knowledge, or to bound complexity at the risk of not finding the actual optimal route).

Speaking of networks and decision maths, a minimum spanning tree is a subset of the edges of a network that connects every node of the network (indirectly) to every other node, and minimises the total length of the entire subset. Common examples are things like utility networks, where you want to connect everything with the minimum total amount of wire/pipe but aren't too concerned with the shape within that (in practice there are usually additional considerations, but in theory, total distance - or total of some cost metric based on distance - is the only concern).

For the ice-cream question, you could have converted the approximate answer of 32 degrees into the correct one with reasonable confidence by observing that 0.936 is between 1 - 1/15 (0.9333...) and 1 - 1/16 (0.9375), so the error is slightly over 2 degrees and the correct answer to the nearest degree would be the actual answer of 34 degrees.

This is purely a stylistic concern, but for the fuel cost question, I'd have worked out the cost per 100km for each fuel source, and then taken the difference between them to get the savings per 100km then multiply it up to get the savings for the actual distance. It doesn't make much difference for the single, isolated calculation being done here, but if you want to consider variations, changing the annual distance traveled seems more likely than changing the running costs of the cars being considered.

If you assume that the percentage of RDA values are being given to the nearest 1%, the RDA for carbohydrates (to the nearest gram) is somewhere in the range from 294g to 347g. Without assuming additional precision in the data given, you cannot say more precisely than that what the RDA is. Taking account of the human fondness for round numbers, I would be reasonably comfortable saying that the official RDA is one of 300g, 310g, 320g, 330g, or 340g. I would be astonished if the official RDA was actually 318g.
For reference, Google suggests that the RDA for carbohydrate here in the UK is 260g, which would make 19.1 7% to the nearest 1%, so the figure used for that label is definitely different.
My actual answer would probably be something along the lines of "[direct calculation] gives 318g, but considering the implied precision of the data [calculations for 5.5% and 6.5% to give bounds] gives a range of 294g to 347g". I probably wouldn't take the time to opine on the most likely values being multiples of 10g.
If marking, I would comfortably give full marks to that answer, and argue with my supervisor over what to give an answer that didn't include the calculation for 318g but did give the range of values.
I mean definitely a math exam, but I think you shouldve done a harder one, Mathematics Specialist or Extension Unit 2 perhaps.
For question 21 it would have been good to show the compound interest formula

Standard 1 is the most basic HSC Maths, downside is the coarse is "non-ATAR", so you can't used its mark to get into University.
Standard 2 is what most people do, similar to S1 but the content is a lot more in-depth, you can use this make to get into Uni.
Advanced is what I do, functions, calculus that sort of thing.
Extension 1 is similar to advanced but a lot harder, if you want to do this , you need to be doing advanced as well.
Extension 2 is an invite only coarse for the best Ext1 student, it can only be done in year 12.
The HSC (Higher School Certificate) is the final stage of school in the state of New South Wales. Mathematics can be taken at different levels - Standard Maths (2 Units) is the lowest level. Extension 1 (an additional unit to give three units) and Extension 2 (total four units). The exam you completed was the Standard (base course) exam. Would love to see you tackle the extension papers as well. I believe extension 2 students don't actually do the 2 unit paper - it is just assumed knowledge.
I can't remember what that dotted triangle is called, but I can definitely remember losing at least 1/2 a mark if I didn't include it in the answer.
