I don’t see why we come on here with all of this trash talking... Both are great black programs that stand toe to toe each year! It’s been one of the most anticipated battles each and every year since I can remember!!! I know there are biases, but both programs hold there on and deserve respect! Big ups to both programs... This is coming from a JSU Alumnus, trombone section leader ‘02 and Drum major 03 & 04.

It’s one of the biggest rivalries in HBCU history people are going to be passionate about their school I mean you should know you went to Jackson I know you wasn’t in the band like come one guys we don’t have to say we smashed southern it was a tie both bands were great
Lazy_boii504 Passion, that’s one way to put it, lol... Most of these kats that comment under these clips have never been apart of successful band programs as these two. Both bands have room for improvement, of course. I enjoyed my time in the Boom when SU was on the schedule. It meant that we were finally going to get a band across from us that could fight back and would fight back. I’m not a trash talker unless you open your mouth and are truly from a garbage program that has no business even leaving the band room...🤦🏾♂️ As I stated before, I respect both programs and have my negative thoughts about them that I only state to those who can help make change. I’m glad to see that after all of these years that these two programs are still the scream of the crop and only being compared to themselves and previous years... Other SWAC schools need to figure out how to elevate their programs. It would be refreshing to see the fight come from an underdog.

Both bands were great but I liked that JSU had a really diverse book - they had rock, disco, r&b, gospel, hip hop and so on. The conductor (and orchestrator) at JSU really has to be commended for that.
JSU did not run out of songs. They agree to a certain amount of songs. After that the away band leaves. Been this way for years I don’t understand why people still say this

Not bias at all. I like both bands, but JSU won this one and here's why. They played music that keeps you wanting more and need to say they sound incredible. The juke was good and sound good no doubt but they are starting to get boring. They need that killer instinct more. They NEED THAT MUSTARD. But very good battle.

This was a nice battle. To ME it was neck and neck. Both of these schools are rich in music tradition amd excellence. I will not call a winner as it could lean either way for any particular reason or reasons. With the dying of music in some high and middle schools around the countey, maybe everyone should come together to help make sure bands of rich heritage can continue. This is from a NSU Spartan Legion alum. Great job ladies amd gentlemen.
I'm convinced all SU fans are under a spell I've never seen a fan base so delusional they think SU can't be touched, can't lose a battle or anything wrong in their eyes. That Boom will always give them a run for their money 2 top bands 2 different styles cudos to both programs.

😂😂😂😂 I'm sitting here in tears. I am not sure whats more entertaining, this 5th quarter or the ppl in the comment section going in on each other. Well as a none SWAC band member, I am truly imoressed by both bands. I've never been on either schools bandwagon, but that Batman SU played was nice. My only gripe with it was I wished the trumpets didnt try to scream their part. But even with that, still like it. It was out the box and very unexpected. As for JSU great job as well, but my only gripe was how fast they played Stand. Whew that was drilling tempo. But never the less great job both programs!
Mister E yeah i agree both are great band programs. The best in the SWAC imo. Just started listening to JSU the last decade but been listening to SU since i was a little kid. SU has always played loud and has a massive amount of trumpets and always give them the lead in all their songs. JSU could use more trumpets but I love their tuba's they are the best to me. The ppl in the comment section can be quite entertaining and embarrassing at the same time. The fans really take this thing seriously and will argue and debate for days. It's crazy!

Listen both band fans will never give the other it's due! I'm a jukebox fan. Born and raised n Scotland. From a child. Jsu has a great intro , drum majors, dolls, but when it comes 2 drills and actual arrangements NOBODY comes close 2 SU! It's a reason they are called this jukebox! Da songs sound like they do on da radio! A real musician wouldnt knock that no matter band they are a fan of!

Okay 25 or to 4 vs. the theme song from Batman....a pretty even split. 2nd round another tie with a slight edge to Southern. 3rd round ballads...pretty even as well but Southern's arrangement of their ballad was harder to pull off. 4th round ehh. 5th round...Even! So I'm unbias as they come since I marched in the Pac-12 but love all HBCUs, but I've been watching videos of JSU seems like for years now. And they really brought it to Southern....But once again as the battle went on, it seemed like Southern got cleaner and stronger in sound and JSU was running out of gas. But the days of Southern is just flat out better then all the rest is all but over. Thanks @KillaKevProd for putting up another good battle
Props to both sides for showing some finesse. Save the overblowing for zero qt. The 5th should be where you show real arrangements and execution. Maybe get ignant towards the end lol.
I'm late, but I say JSU won this battle. Both bands are good. SU played a couple of nice pieces. But overall, I like JSU style of music and selections for this battle.

First time commenting. Both bands are beast and IMHO are true rivals in every sense of the word. Nevertheless, before I decide to give a W to either of these two sound gods, I do have questions:
Why was JSU put in the corner of the stadium and not in a more respectable position...?
Why did they put the JSettes on the track and not in the stands adjacent to their band...?
Since the early 80s dats just how it went. No explanation ever givin....Probably was the case b4 the 80s as well.

@@jukeman8544 Indeed much respect to the memory of DOC for all that he brought and instilled into what has now become the nationally respected world wide known "Human JukeBox".
I understand it well and tell me if I'm wrong: Southern University's marching band has been one of the most influential elements of... providing that thing that was/is needed to elevate the sound and image of bands coming forth from our HBCUs. You heard me. I speak of DOC, Mr. Taylor...Eddie Robinson...the list goes on and on. These individuals understood the principle that at the end of the day, you still gave respect to your opponent - but especially if he/she was an HBCU.
I remember how that Eddie said something to the effect that(his last Bayou Classic): "they can't say we didn't give them a show". Now he was saying it while standing in the presence of a number of Southern and Grambling coaches and alumni and such. Humble and Classy The lesson: It was important for him(Grambling)to win, but still not disrespect what his HBCU opponent(s) had provided. Back then...Grambling won the football game, but the Juke crushed just about everybody in band...it was what it was.
I guess...going forward as Southern continues to perform at the level of excellence that we all have grown accustomed to...I just hope that this matter of putting an HBCU band opponent wayyyyyyyyy off to the side (look at the video - JSU is not even on the football field...there's the endzone, field goal post and then JSU squished up behind all that)

This was awesome. There is no question both bands brought their A game. In terms of balanced sounds, musicianship, song selections coupled with power Southern was the better band.
Another thing the camera man wasnt directly in front of SU. He was on the side. While JSU was pointing directly at them making it seem like they were louder 🤔. A lil questionable huh?
That has nothing to do with the camera man. Had JSU not angled their horns they would have been to the side as well. Southern CHOSE not to angle their horns.
Killa Kev Productions well notice I didn't say it was the camera man that did anything right or wrong. It was an observation about his position addressing those individuals who "thought" JSU was louder! As he moved in front on SU you can hear the full grunt of SU. Personally, I thought JSU did a better job than SU until that happened. But kudos to both bands. It's always great to see HBCU's performing at the highest level
