The Mills Brothers are a fascinating story. Thanks for playing Tiger Rag, which had been a hit for the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1918. But back to the Mills.
John was the oldest. He played guitar and did the bass and tuba parts. He died in ‘36 of pneumonia.
Herbert was the tenor and rarely sang lead, though he was an excellent soloist.
Harry was the baritone and the lead musician. He was also the spokesman for the band and did all the talking at their shows.
Donald sang lead and does the scat on Tiger Rag. He also did the trombone during the early years.
The brothers pretty much knocked off the ersatz musician stuff when John died, though they hired a guitarist who was often the only musical accompaniment on their softer stuff.
The three surviving brothers did shows into the early 80s and also starred in an American Express commercial that is a scream!
Thanks again for playing them. Another great early tune of theirs is I Heard.

Great show! I dont get to see it live, but i watch it on my tv from the youtube app. If you have it or maybe you played it before. But i would love to hear Lonnie Johnson- Tomorrow Night. That reminds me of my late grandfather.
Also, my late God-Father had tons of 78s when i was a kid in the 1970s. He had all the late 40s & 50s blues, and early rock & roll. Unfortunately he lost all of them in a flood in 2001. So the records you play bring back memories for me. Thanks again.

Greetings John....that's what the archive is for...many of my listeners are out of my East Coast time zone or they are busy ..working etc...so that's why the archive comes in handy!! Sorry that your Godfather lost all those 78's ...tragic...I understand there were some collectors who lost everything in the horrific fires in California...including their record collections!! With regard to the LONNIE JOHNSON song you mention... I do have it...on a 45...it was initially released on a 78 in 1948...which I might have, but not sure....Syd Nathan would re-release it, TWICE...once in 1954 and then again in 1959 on KING...they might have added a chorus to the 1954 release and even more to the 1959 release...I have both those checked off in my book....so I can play it tomorrow night for you in the 1954 block...but it might sound a bid different with the added stuff....Thanks again for listening and please continue to enjoy the shows! Best , JohnnyG

Reeewind; missed the live, I’m here to listen and learn a bit today though.
    Be well
( Ooh! I know this “Tiger Rag” by the Mills Brothers funnily enough it’s the 1-2nd play. Have it in a pre-50s playlist, though my music is mostly on streaming) My grandparents all older then them
