This is a comment. I don't know how you couldn't concede that Edu has been successful thus far in his tenure. When he came in the house was burning down and our roster/wages was a complete mess. The club has been completely turned around and feels like its soul has been returned. We have a pulse and connection again. I think with someone at a scale of a football club success is kind of a shifting goal post and up to this point he's been very successful. As we move on success will mean trophies because it will be all that remains and if we're not at that point yet we will be soon. Cheers Tom.
Competing is great but, let’s take Real Madrid, Munich & huge clubs a long those lines. Trophies is their main focus at all costs. Ruthless mentality… this is what is needed and what the fans should demand. My opinion 😊
Mikel’s ruthless start to his career with Arsenal is the reason we have what we have now. If not, we’d still be stuck with all the rotten deadwood we had when he arrived.
@@snaggiz certainly agree. But as a club it’s taken far too long to get to this stage. The club have to be willing to spend big and smarter that mentality seems to be changing over the last few years with Rice, timber, Califorie and so on.
I agree, but Real and Munich didn’t have to come from 8th place. You need to build a similar history before you can demand a similar standard. 3 years ago we missed top 4 by a couple of points and now we are missing title by couple of points. It’s coming
Happy Friday Tom and everyone… I agree the Edu/Arteta regime has been a success so far.. but it is now time to take the next step and win trophies… if we are still in this position next summer and certainly the summer after it will no doubt come to a natural end. The problem will also be hanging on to our best players if the trophy drought continues.
I dont mind keeping ramsdale but there are decent keepers out there for free like rui patricio if we need the ramsdale money to make other deals happen .
That Edu Interview was interesting in that he detailed the 3 factors he's most concerned with when squad building: Age, Salary and Performance. In effect he said that a player older than 27 on big wages that is underperforming is unacceptable to him and will be moved on. If we take him for his word, then Gabriel Jesus, now 27 years old on £200k a week, needs to have a monster season.
Nelson hasn't got enough end product or the quality needed for the Arsenal, teams not wanting to take him should give you an indication that he isn't to the standard we need. first time we can argue that ESR was available for sale and he's gone.
I’m glad we’re looking like moving away from Nelson and Nketiah. They’ve both had plenty of time in the first team, there’s been opportunities for them to make a strong case for themselves and they’ve failed. They’ve failed to develop into the kind of quality players that make the manager go: “If I don’t play him, I’m doing myself a disservice”. The difference between them and the players they’re competing with for a spot in the team is simply too big. The drop off in quality is too noticeable and at the level we want to go, it’s not good enough anymore. I respect their efforts, but I think it’s best for all parties if they leave so that way we can look at replacements and they can move somewhere where the level is more appropriate for their skill. A footballers career can be very short as we all have seen so I’d rather see them capitalize on the rare opportunity they have.
I took Jonny Bell's point towards the end to be trickier than you acknowledged, Tom. It worries me that the gap between Odegaard and Fábio Vieira is bigger than the gap between Odegaard and Smith-Rowe was. I hope Nwaneri is ready to step in but if he's not we look quite vulnerable to an injury.
Exactly, he's been good in pre-season before, it means absolutely nothing if he's not doing it when it counts. Plus half the team was yelling at him for not tracking back against Liverpool too which is another reason Arteta's reluctant to trust him.
I don’t really think he’s even looked good. He’s just kind of been there. He’s tried to take people on, sure. But his positioning is always questionable for me, tracking back as mentioned by others and he misses a lot of good opportunities to pass/move the ball because he wants to dribble everyone around him and show what he’s capable of. That bit is prob a part of trying to impress in pre season but I don’t feel it’s what we do as a team.
I don't think anything Edu said in the latest interview is controversial. Some detractors and fan=critics may dub it as controversial but its always better to be factual and truthful which Edu is than to say things to avoid criticism a la Yoonited.
@TOM statistically (in yrs where fbref has stats) I get Toney: 91 goals on 480 shots (0.1895833333). -- Kia 68 goals on 436 shots (0.1559633028). I like to compare npxG to npGoals. Toney: 47 npGoals on 46.1 npxG for +0.9. -- Kia 58 npGoals on 58.3 npxG for -0.3. So statistically by the best calcs I could make Toney wins. I'd still stick with Kia (3 yrs younger and we've already paid for him and better attitude).
There is a reason why Sancho and his entire balling group said Reiss is better ability wise than them all. Just needs a decent run or at least a bit of trust to support Saka
27 on Raya, 42 on Cali, 25 on Merino but we've got 34 back on ESR. So why can't we buy a striker? We're 60 mil out of pocket. Surely we went into this market with more than 60 mil available for transfers?
I think what we’ve seen over the past few years is that the club has improved both the footballing side of things and the operating side of things. It is not a given, but these will put the club closer to trophies (and, more consistently). The success up until now is that we seem to be building a model that can be sustained. We mustn’t rest on that success, though, because the ultimate confirmation of the work put in is lifting a trophy. And another, and another, ad infinitum.
I think you're dismissing Partey too soon. Just remember who he's playing with this preseason. I've been impressed with his aggressiveness in tackles which says to me that he's over his injury. Also, he did an interview over here (US) and they started talking about other midfielders and he was acerbic in his response as if to say, don't underestimate me.
Nelson looks sharp and i wouldn't mind if he stays but only if we still have the money to invest in signings and by keeping Nelson doesn't negate our ability to freshen up the options on our rw.
He didn't say he or the club was SATISFIED with last season. If he said that I would be worried and upset. He simply said he felt they have been successful which I don't think can be argued with. They finished second behind a HISTORICALLY good team.
Hey Tom, that color looks nice on you my friend! Quick check in: I still want a TGT hat because the logo is gasoline, and I really want to support you. Will you ever get some more in stock to sell? I need one in my life brother
I always feel like Jesus’s problem isn’t his finishing (all strikers miss a lot of chances) it’s the fact that he just doesn’t get shots off when he can/should. He’s always looking to beat an extra guy and sometimes he just needs to pull the trigger
@TOM (1) i agree with Edu to an extent what arsenal have done over the last 3-4 season is going from a top eight team to a team fighting for the top premiership trophy for the last two season, that is definitely progress and relative success, where i would disagree is resting on our laurels and using the past 3 seasons as as a springboard to start winning silver wear. (2) Reiss Nelson: has been a victim of injuries at the wrong time, in fact he has not been able to have a period prolonged playing within the first team. if he has had as much time as eddie i think his stats would have been much better. I would keep him as a fringe first team player.
Tom it’s because the guys who want a new shiny forward get upset because they thinking keeping nelson stops this which it doesn’t. If Williams, musiala, sesko or gyokores doesn’t want to come and selling nelson doesn’t facilitate this happening then it’s better to keep him than sell him. Selling makes no sense sometimes. I know we missed out on money for Niles but sometimes it’s better to keep an option than to sell.

Are you sure of that?.. Why seemingly are no other clubs interested in him?... I'm not saying he's not an okey player but something doesn't feel right with him... its a huge risk in my opinion
Pls don't put havertz in the same boat as Toney. Toney plays for a far inferior team and is a clinical finisher. Havertz isn't a no 9. Arteta brought him in to play in the midfield which failed miserably and stumbled upon him as a no 9 thx to Jesus's injury, to be fair he's done reasonably well , however Toney is far superior to him when it comes to finishing. If we can't get gyokeres, I would go for Toney. Like Merino, he's a good option for a couple of yrs would cost half of the gyokeres fee and we can invest in a no 9 again in a yr or 2. He didn't make the england squad for nothing.
Nelson was here last season and Saka still played too many minutes so I don’t think Arteta sees him as a viable option. Also 15 apps, with limited minutes in all fairness, 0goals 0assists just doesn’t make sense to keep him IMO.
@@TheGoonerTalkTV true that and you’re right in saying he’s looked sharp this pre season, it just feels to me like that’s the last obviously upgradable position in the squad (quality rotation option for the wings) some real quality there and I’m confident with depth in pretty much every position. reiss nelson is going nowhere. you heard it first, no need for the fab exclusive. Him being on a 100k/ week makes it almost impossible to move . Bottom half teams rarely pay players this much unless they are top performers. Paying a guy with 0g 0a messes up the wage structure of a bottom half team
