  • With its rapid growth and towering tassels, my garden wouldn’t be complete without the glory of corn. Urban gardens may have limited growing space, but planting corn from seed in raised beds can yield epic results. Trench planting, seed spacing, and consistent moisture are key in this approach.

    I'll have to do the trench method next time. My 8ft Bloody Butcher corn struggles with the crazy windy storms we get in Austin. Thanks for the tips! 👍🏼

    I love all of your videos because they are so educational, but the bloopers at the end are so entertaining😂. I'm growing organically but the corn-ear worms are pretty destructive, what do you do about them?

      I use spinocide...it only attacks those worms. But with the rain we get I find it it usually has just a day ...im spraying about every 3 days!!! And it gets washed off every other day!! All I can do is try..if the cobs are bad I give them to neighbors chickens. So they don't go to waste

      Hey! Thank you! My approach is to plant early, plant a variety that matures quickly, and most importantly harvest as soon as the corn is prime and ready. Ideally harvesting before these pests can get going. Historically I have simply tolerated some corn earworm damage, but when I'm late to plant or harvest the damage is worse. I'm ok with cutting off a little tip damage if that's as bad as it gets. That's another reason why I plant as much corn as I have space for so that I can better accept a little damage.
      Spraying spinosad or B.t. may not be effective once the caterpillars are active inside the developing ear of corn. One recommendation that I have never tried is an application of mineral oil to the silks, but you have to do it frequently and repeatedly as soon as silks start to form. That seems like a lot of work!

      @newgardenroad I also wonder if applying oil to silks might interfere with kernel development?

    I've heard the type of squash and beans you plant for a 3-sisters garden matters. I think the squash needs to be a winter squash. Not sure on the beans. Might be worth looking into.

      Yes I’ve always thought of it in a dryland farming context and would like to try it as such someday.

    When did you plant your corn? I’m also in central Texas and your corn is twice the size of mine. They look great!

    Curious about Painted Hill or Sehsapsing Delaware Black Flint varieties in a bed that size?

      I would give it a shot if you're limited on space, I've grown a few varieties using this method with consistent results.

    What’s your irrigation schedule? I planted a second succession of corn in April and it’s barely around 2 ft tall. With all this crazy May heat waves wondering how it will do. You mentioned heat can affect pollination? How so? Should I hand pollinate? It’s in ground 4’ x 10’ space.

      I haven't been irrigating regularly, but I've run drip irrigation three times since planting. I check the soil often and wait until it's dry at my finger tip before watering. Also, I planted my corn in mid March this year.
      Extended temperatures above 90 degrees can render pollen sterile and disrupt pollination. In this case it could help to tap the corn stalk near the tassel early in the morning when it's cooler to encourage pollination.

    You only fertilize your corn once?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  2 місяці тому

      I add fertilizer during initial soil prep, use a liquid drench after germination, and fertilize again prior to hilling. I also apply a foliar spray of liquid seaweed throughout the season.

      8 inches apart is closer than I'm used to. I used grid pattern and plant one each foot. I'm curious about planting closer like you and what the benefits are?
