HEY, i just saw your video, only when you said you made your own songs I noticed your name is Vosto and that my favorite synth music was yours: A world within. what a masterpiece, congrats. (btw sorry if I made a grammar error, I'm Brazilian)
You my friend, are a internet youtube legend. So many, and I do mean so many tracks and artists I found on your channel. Thank a bunch. Sidebar: i do miss maniacsynth channel sometimes. Keep the wave going
This will never be mainstream. Not one underground electronic music genre became mainstream, except for that so-called EDM, but that doesn't even count in my book because it is THE worst kind of music of all time.
I just did a show with Com Truise headlining and let him know about how this documentary first introduced me to his music. He was really knocked out that this documentary exists, and meant a lot to be held in a regard high enough to reach so far and wide. Such a nice, humble man - it was a blast getting to talk to him, and see him interact with fans like a fun, fair, easygoing guy.
yeah this documentary is good but it's kind of out of date and also misses some bands like the midnight because I never even heard of them at the time. I hope you showed him or told him about the part where I mixed arnold quotes from pumping iron to com truise's music, the "I'm cumming day and night" quote. That being said this was part of me trying to do something positive on the channel because I usually talked about conspiracy theories so I wanted to add what matters to me and that is music and synthwave. Now the scene is kind of falling appart and people moved on to do other stuff but I'm still doing it because for me it wasn't just a trend. If you have time check out my new album station 23 on bandcamp. - vosto.bandcamp.com/album/station-23
I was a young man in the 80's and I can confirm that it was a magical time and if I'd known how shit it was going to be now, I'd have thought it was even more magical. You are right to be nostalgic about the 80's even if you were not even born then. Young people: Your future has been hijacked by a bunch of old farts in expensive suits.
Nailed it! Wonderful, in depth look into the rad genre that brings us so much joy. I was class of 1984 and can say you definitely did your homework! The 80s were indeed a friendlier time, fresh fun and full of promise. Might sound corny but blasting Synthwave jams [daily] is jumper cables for my spirit, a bit of the same fun and promise that keeps me going in today's often uncertain world. Bless you Vosto Vlad!
I was born in 89, so I always say I'm from the '80s even I just lived just 5 months in that decade. My favorite stuff is from de '80s, music, movies, games, visual identity. Thanks for your documentary, it was really nice!
My WHOLE thing is Synthwave. I LOVE IT. I've never found a more enjoyable genre (other than EuroBeat) to listen to PERIOD. Even though it was pioneered from 80's music I believe it took everything amazing about the 80's and doubled it. This whole video was right up my alley and I loved the whole thing. Really great job dude.
The fact that these movies and songs had to be smuggled makes them even more awesome and nostalgic to you than us in america that had them at our finger tips. I'm jealous.
I was born in 1984, a bit too young to experience the 80s myself. But my dad was always playing music at home during that time, so there's certainly a nostalgic memory to that. I saw 80s movies only much later, but they were still awesome.
French artist DANGER was probably the first modern synthwave artist I ever heard back in 2007 (19h11 holy shit). I've always felt there were some quiet roots in the chiptunes community - some Razor1911 tracks are very reminiscent of current synthwave releases - both harkening back to 80s arcade nostalgia.
So glad I found this! I have over 1,300 songs in my Synthwave playlist. I was born in the year of Star Wars 1977. I will never let go of the 80s or 90s ❤️
Mate, this video seems to be at least 1 year old, but it’s fantastic. I always had the feel of being out of the place I should be, having a sip of pleasure whenever I came across smth that I couldn’t describe, and since a few months I found myself in the Synthwave/Cyberpunk universe and I feel like I finally found myself.
yes the title used to have 2018 on it but I removed because ppl are less to click on stuff if it's not from the present or smth... I still think it's relevant as this is an entire retrospective and I don't just talk about daily nonsense like all the other youtubers :D
The music is untouchable. Nothing can take that away. More exposure is a good thing because someone lonely might never have heard these songs. Fm84, sunglasses kid, the midnight--- they really changed my night, and changed my life. Music is what I need to get me going and I've been looking for something like this for so long. I don't want anyone to miss out on this.
Cool documentary, I love synthwave. I was born in 1975 so remember the 80s, many of the movies like Robocop etc , me and my freinds were watching those in the early 90s as VHS rentals as were too young to get to see them at the cinema so in many ways the 80s nostalgia also seeps into early 90s :) As well as 80s, I grew up watching 70s sci fi movies so I am also nostalgic for sounds like Boards Of Canada etc. In the UK we used to tune into soviet/eastern European radio stations on the radio as if we were spies, didnt understand what was being said wanted to believe it was top secret probably mundane things like the weather and local news ha ha.
You posted this on Discord, so this is your first video i see. It is well done, especially liked the editing and the visuals. But what I wanted to say is that I really dont know how to feel about this popularity thing. I want people to see this and understand what Synthwave is while at the same time not wanting Synthwave to go mainstream.. I hope I will never get bored of synthwave. At least we can say we liked it before every second youtuber had a Synthwave intro/outro...
definitely , it's like with dubstep , in 2007 it was so edgy to listen to it and then 2011 skrillex appeared and butt raped it ...soon all kids on yt had dubstep intros :)) and now it's over saturated ...
I was born in 1980, the pop culture of the 80s warped my mind into what it is today. The Goonies and the Never-ending Story VHS tapes that I wore to breaking point can attest to this! This music is a bit of an obsession for me too.
I was 10-19 in the 80s... and I can say in al the years I've lived, the 80s were the most upbeat, light-hearted, and cheesy eras I've lived through... in the 70s, the "free love" time was ending and people were living with the end of the Vietnam war, and the 80s seemed to be an era where most of the world was finding hope and peace, and music reflected that - the 70s were a kind of driven transition, with a lot of harder rebellious or sad, melancholy feelings in most music... the happy, carefree tracks were the rarity... but the 80s music gained the new technological sounds from Kraftwerk, Isao Tomita and others started in the late 70s meeting the hopeful, upbeat driving momentum of the 80s and the influx of home computers and games, the coolness of the space shuttle program, MTV and cable giving us a hundred channels to watch to entertain us, and the feeling that the future was so bright, we'd have to wear shades... and not yet to the pissed-off, overwhelmed, depression-filled angst of the 90s alternative and grunge music. It was really a magical time in a lot of ways... a confluence of hope, tech, and style that was unique to the era... and the bands and people who work to recapture that are appreciated by those that were there and miss it, like myself. :)
>The Midnight >Quixotic-Arnold >Kristine >Bubblegum-Teenage Synth Rock/Pop(Retro ones). With that high school summer break vibe. Some are quite minimal but really catchy. Not necessarily cheesy >The influence of Post Punk/Industrial and Electronic Music in general on this genre
One word.. Wow!! This was a most enjoyable documentary. I was born in 77 so I had a pretty full 80’s experience and you hit the topic spot on. I’ve recently started production of humble attempts at synthwave. This video will certainly help me continue as it showed me so many names of artists and communities. You might want to give Home and Emil Rottmeyer a listen. Thanks for this great contribution to the culture!!
Well done and well put together! I do feel that there is a part missing from your documentary - a comparison between Synthwave and Vaporwave. There's a strange relationship between these two genres were Vaporwave puts an ironic, "arty", spin to 80's and 90's commercialism, chopping it and slowing it down to create an eerie, lonely sense of rootlessness, like you are walking through a dying shopping mall. In contrast, Synthwave started out as an ironic take on 80's aesthetic (Vice City, Blood Dragon) and over time became more and more sincere. It's like Vaporwave points to the failure of commercial escapism while Synthwave doubles down on it, refines the aesthetic and does a better job than the original - more 80's than the 80's!
This was really well produced. Thorough, but also concise enough that I didn't get bored. I was particularly struck by the part about you growing up in Romania under Soviet-era conditions. Smuggling in western music and movies must have created a very different experience to those of us that took our freedoms for granted in Western Europe (and in many cases heard the songs and saw the films years before you could) but ultimately we are unified in our love of music.
yeah what I can say is that since the time of this documentary synthwave has had a big surge in lame artists over saturating it and begging for attention...I still follow the OG's tho
Vosto, I just want to share a personal THANK YOU on just how stellar this documentary was. You nail the hammer on the head, and further cements my love of this no-longer niche music and art style. In 2021, its becoming more popular, as game series such as Battlefield, Need for Speed, Arcade Paradise, Solar Ash, Rocket League, Five Nights at Freddy's, Fortnite, Beat Saber, Wave Break and FarCry all take inspiration from the vibes of the 80s. What a time we live in.
I was born in '95 in Poland and can definitely resonate with 80's cultural heritage having a major impact on some people in my generation growing up. Watching 80's films, playing old SNES and DOS games and hearing all the old songs way into the 2000s was amazing.
Synth is huge!!! and im glad. People from all walks can love this stuff. Im from a Heavy metal background, born 1985 and love the old games and action movies. Still finding new artists and loving the sound.
I appreciate the Synthwave/Vaporwave/Cyberpunk aesthetic - it's nice to get some background on the origins. Also to get a mini-history lesson on what was happening in Romania. Thanks for the vid
Man, I searched Synthwave Documentary, and did not expect something of this quality. 2 years later, and still holds up. I was also pleasantly surprised that you named a few artists I hadn't heard of like tonebox.
What I love about about synthwave is that it's not only a pastiche of all the greatest 80's cheesey tropes, cyberpunk but has even bled over into the 90's and Simpsons-wave was born.
Foarte tare documentarul ! Sunt chiar mandru sa aflu ca exista oameni in propria mea tara care promoveaza stilul meu preferat de muzica cu atata pasiune ! Nu-i de mirare ca miscarea synthwave devine din ce in ce mai populara. Felicitari !!!
I used to despise the electronic music for my whole teenage, but this year, 2022, I've just run into this new retrowave by chance and now I cannot stop consuming it. I like good music, but most of the time I don't wanna listen to anything, but just enjoy the moment, the atmosphere, my thoughts. Synth is here to stay, comrades.
Great Documentary! I was born in 1974 so I got experience the 1980’s in all its glory. One movie people never mention that should get more attention is Risky Business! The soundtrack is very Synth based and features Tangerine Dream but the style in that movie I think influenced Mitch Murder.
i love your music Vosto, seeing this documentary you made is amazing, it really shows the backbone of the music itself and how it culturally came to be. you nailed it dude, this is awesome; you are awesome. Always happy to hear you on nightride fm and see you in the chat. (Ruiner2077 on the stream) there is a song you did with Donbor, Trail of Freedom and the two of you together made some scary beautiful music, but everything you do musically i feel in my soul in a way that so much other music can not make me feel.
It was very nice to learn a different perspective of the 80s. I was a young boy in México during that time and can attest that the 80s were a great decade to live in. You made that point very well. And you also introduced me to lot of new music to listen to! You got my subscribe, man.
Had I not started my GTA experience with GTA III, I would've possibly thought the same thing. I spent hours playing it 20 years ago. The song however is ORIGINALLY from the soundtrack to Scarface and is by Giorgio Moroder
I watch it making fist my hands and tears in my eyes !!!!! Thank you for this Doc. I was having some problems to share my knowledge and feelings to my friends about synth... and here is the solution. Again dude, thank you.
Vosto, I've been subscribed to your channel since the beginning. I loved your conspiracy related videos, but I really love synth wave. As an 80's kid, I love the retro feel. This genre compiles all of the good of the 80's, and leaving out most of the cheese. I first got into this genre through watching Drive, and discovering Kavinsky. I'm also a fan of Trevor Something, amongst many others. It's funny, because I'm already subscribed to half the channels you plugged. Keep up the amazing content, and making your own badass tracks.
much respect ! your comment confirms that this direction in which I am going with the channel is a valid one , you may see stuff like this or you may see something conspiracy related ... I think it works good together ...also , nothing wrong with a bit of cheese ... not too much though :D
Excellent documentary! Will definitely check out your tracks soon. To think that kavinsky was producing this aesthetic back in 2007 must make him father of the genre.
I need to find the most used sounds and vsts for making my own synthwave. For I made some songs with synth sounds in my channel but I need to find more and more songs to learn to hear them as well. I loved this documentary and I appreciate the songs you shared so everyone can look for the artists. In this millennium I was born, I hope I can help with the spread of synthwave, so that everyone can enjoy such beautiful vibes.
im so in love with synthwave and this is definitely one of the best videos I've ever watched ! thank u so much for such an amazing documentary pleas keep going ❤❤
Thank you so much for this video. Your hard work and recommended artists and your own music are hugely appreciated and enjoyed. I discovered synthwave through Hotline Miami soundtrack and later sorta through vaporwave. But didn't know where to start to try to understand how all these juicy tasty genres and subgenres started. I'd tell friends about this music in really vague limited ways. So now I'm equiped and educated more so on this music that makes life that much more meaningful for me. Thank you!
As a huge synthwave fan, I love the music and the aesthetic, and even produce some on the side - I never knew where to look for more. You've opened my eyes to an entirely new world, and for that, I thank you. My friend sent this video to me and it was the best thing I've watched in 2018, and trust me, I have youtube on in the background almost 24/7.
This comment is very strong and motivational for me ! hey you should visit my radio website sometime , I update it all the time , If you go to rekt.network and go to " stations " and then " rektro " it will play synthwave 24/7 in 320kbps , so better than the 192kbps on youtube :D also would like to chat with you in the chat section XDD
Awesome documentary. Really helped orient me as I've been loving this music for a while now but as a vital and living genre it's a bit harder to get a handle on what's going on. I hope this genre lasts and evolves for a long time. It's such a great mix of beautiful sounds, dance feel, and evocative moods. Love the clip of your personal track too.
That was excellent! So informative and comprehensive with many examples that I didn't even know, especially pre-2012 stuff. Thank you so much! God, I hope this revival of '80s stuff keeps going for a while. I really do. I love it.
There is a lot going on. From a love of specific art to music styles, nostalgia and things retro. Dance With The Dead, Perturbator, Gost and also more pop style artists like Gunship and Scandroid, they all deliver. Can't believe this is lasting more than a decade now. When I became aware of this I thought it won't outlive electro swing, which was a really badly played house music thing. But this retro synthwave was more than that. 80s pop, 80s horror soundtracks, Italo Disco, all mixed up with metal, hard rock and even death metal to let the darkness collide with bright neon lights. Is there anything that did not exist?
Amazing video, the Arnold jokes were on point. Dance with the Dead's B-Sides Album and Hasselhoff's True Survivor brought me into the Genre. It became one of my favorites besides Metal and 80s Rock/Pop. I'm looking forward to more Video Games with the aesthetics of Cyberpunk2077, Hotline Miami, FarCry 3 Blood Dragon...
sorry for the part at 8:15 , but the sound got banned by the youtube bot so it's muted :( don't forget to visit nightride.fm radio !
HEY, i just saw your video, only when you said you made your own songs I noticed your name is Vosto and that my favorite synth music was yours: A world within. what a masterpiece, congrats. (btw sorry if I made a grammar error, I'm Brazilian)
@@HoundNL thanks a lot ! I only now saw your comment !
Nice documentary! I subbed and liked it a lot!
i was born in 81, 80-90 used to be lame and cool at the same time, but now its pure aesthetic artform gold
It makes it more funny

I was born in 1977 = neros77 btw ;-) I love this scene! Thanks for mentioning me :-) Very great documentary sir I salute you!
oh , you know what they say about songs that don't end up on your channel " they're not 80's enough " , thanks for keeping true retro alive !
You my friend, are a internet youtube legend. So many, and I do mean so many tracks and artists I found on your channel. Thank a bunch.

Holly shit, my work in a Synthwave related documentary?! That's fucking new to me!
Good work mate
ty you are an inspiration!
I was here when Synthwave began.
In a few decades, once everyone hates on Synthwave because it's "mainstream", I can tell them how it became to be.
Facts.
If synthwave surpasses vaporwave, I'll be pissed
@@CoryMck I thought it already did, synthwave/outrun is like more mainstream and Vaporwave is underground
Mainstream? ._.
This will never be mainstream. Not one underground electronic music genre became mainstream, except for that so-called EDM, but that doesn't even count in my book because it is THE worst kind of music of all time.

I 'd recommend listening to Waveshaper, his music is consistently good.

Absolutely great one!!! So fresh & fueled with so much 80's vibez!! Congrats!!
This is a great video. Thankyou for taking the time to create and upload it. 😁
no problemo
Legend says that Vosto Vlad stills hearts comments to this day. Awesome video btw!
Fantastic throwback to the 80's in which I was already 20+ and still loved the music!
I appreciate the Synthwave/Vaporwave/Cyberpunk aesthetic - it's nice to get some background on the origins.
Also to get a mini-history lesson on what was happening in Romania.
Thanks for the vid
I remember Kung fury... Gonna have to watch it again...thanks for the upload
watch out for kung fury II ;)
Man, I searched Synthwave Documentary, and did not expect something of this quality. 2 years later, and still holds up. I was also pleasantly surprised that you named a few artists I hadn't heard of like tonebox.
I did miss some of the important acts though like The Midnight for example! they're some of the most listened synthwave artists :)
Felicitari !!!
in acest moment synthwave face cam 10 ani de existenta , nu stiu daca are puterea sa mai creasca in popularitate dar continuitate cu siguranta va avea
Lazerhawk has a special place in Synthwave for me, mostly because he's from my home town.
Great Documentary! I was born in 1974 so I got experience the 1980’s in all its glory. One movie people never mention that should get more attention is Risky Business! The soundtrack is very Synth based and features Tangerine Dream but the style in that movie I think influenced Mitch Murder.
i am a huge fan of Retrowave. The songs, the art, and everything about it
Blood Dragon is still my favorite Far Cry game. Thanks for including it!
i love your music Vosto, seeing this documentary you made is amazing, it really shows the backbone of the music itself and how it culturally came to be. you nailed it dude, this is awesome; you are awesome. Always happy to hear you on nightride fm and see you in the chat. (Ruiner2077 on the stream) there is a song you did with Donbor, Trail of Freedom and the two of you together made some scary beautiful music, but everything you do musically i feel in my soul in a way that so much other music can not make me feel.
wow didn't expect this comment today but it's very motivating! thanks Ruiner2077!
love this documentary, and just much support long live the 80's and 80's FOREVER
It was very nice to learn a different perspective of the 80s. I was a young boy in México during that time and can attest that the 80s were a great decade to live in. You made that point very well. And you also introduced me to lot of new music to listen to! You got my subscribe, man.
Vosto!! Awesome documentary. Love your sense of humor! Well Done! Bravo!! ❤️🇷🇴
Un alt fan al synthwaveului?
Romania Gang
Push It To The Limit was actually in GTAIII along with 3 other songs from the Scarface soundtrack
so my friend was right but it was the wrong GTA
Had I not started my GTA experience with GTA III, I would've possibly thought the same thing. I spent hours playing it 20 years ago. The song however is ORIGINALLY from the soundtrack to Scarface and is by Giorgio Moroder
Passionate, informative and enjoyable from start to finish, as an 80s baby I say salute to you sir!
Thanks for this Vosto, all very informative!
Still love this doc
Excellent documentary! Will definitely check out your tracks soon.
To think that kavinsky was producing this aesthetic back in 2007 must make him father of the genre.
This was very insightful! I've recently started producing synthwave and will have some tracks coming soon. I really love this genre 😁
Tron and Tron legacy art style and soundtracks.
Was what got me into synthwave.
Please dont stop making videos, its fucking amazing what your doing
A lot of the "dead mall" youtube channels use Synthwave. I found out about it this way and never looked back. it really is some amazing music.
This was really well made, good job!
Thanks vosto vlad, I really enjoyed this documentary
So glad to see such a great video about synthwave, now i have so many new artists to discover, thanks for this and keep going ;)
Today I got to know many things in your video, Thanks you Vosto Vlad.
SO good to finally find someone real talking about what matters to us. SYNTH. Thank u so much bro! Keep diggin' our digital 80's influences!
im so in love with synthwave and this is definitely one of the best videos I've ever watched ! thank u so much for such an amazing documentary pleas keep going ❤❤
Loved this Vosto, thank you!
Thank you!
Give my music a listen if you see this comment. I'd love to have yall as subscribers and fans.
Bravo Vasto
This was fun to watch had moments of laughter, really love this genre you introduced me to few great artist including yourself lol
@@GamesExposed UA-cam is only 128kbps now D:
Awesome documentary. Really helped orient me as I've been loving this music for a while now but as a vital and living genre it's a bit harder to get a handle on what's going on. I hope this genre lasts and evolves for a long time. It's such a great mix of beautiful sounds, dance feel, and evocative moods. Love the clip of your personal track too.
WONDERFUL DOCUMENTARY !!!! 💀
:DDD
Absolutely loved this! Thank you putting this together.
yw! thanks for watching!
That was excellent! So informative and comprehensive with many examples that I didn't even know, especially pre-2012 stuff. Thank you so much! God, I hope this revival of '80s stuff keeps going for a while. I really do. I love it.
What a great documentary! Thank´s for all the new input and stuff to dig and discover. Greetings from east germany - may the grid be with u!
When I listen to classic 80s pop song, I don’t feel like dancing, only synthwave gives me the nostalgia
Omg so good video, thank you. And nice radio btw :p
3rd time watching this, it's great work and deserves more veiws but you should have put a track list in the show more tab.
too much effort :)))
15:10 OMG WHAT!?!? Talk about savage!!! ...and yet totally 80s at the same time XD
You have done well, brother. We are pleased.
This is the best synthwave/retrowave documentary on the internet.
of course ;)
21:47 i love how you follow up with a brut track lel
Amazing video, the Arnold jokes were on point.
Dance with the Dead's B-Sides Album and Hasselhoff's True Survivor brought me into the Genre.
It became one of my favorites besides Metal and 80s Rock/Pop.
I'm looking forward to more Video Games with the aesthetics of Cyberpunk2077, Hotline Miami, FarCry 3 Blood Dragon...
