I know it's up to interpretation, but I think that Cobb was awake at the end of the film. In every other scene where he saw his kids, he didn't see their faces, but in the final scene he actually sees their faces, & they are wearing slightly different clothes compared to previous scenes. Additionally, someone once pointed out how Cobb actually has 2 ways to see if he's awake or not-his top & his wedding ring-& they explained that if you watch him he'll check his wedding ring to know when he's awake.

I think the point of the end of the movie is that it doesn't matter if it's still a dream or not. He stopped paying attention to the totem and decided to be with his children. Whether it's a dream or reality he doesn't care at that point.

I strongly disagree with this take. He cares above all that he returns to his children in the real world. He is not interested in finding happiness in a dream world with his children. In fact, he literally explicitly rejects that idea when Mal offers it. He says that any projection is a shadow of the real person. If he was in a dream with his children, that would be his ultimate failure and a profoundly tragic ending, which I don't believe is the intention.

I don't think it is the greatest film of all time. I don't think that title can go to any single film, there's just too many great ones out there for there to be a clear GOAT. But it is certainly among the most serious contenders for the title. What's amazing though is that imo it can't even be called Nolan's Magnum Opus, as Interstellar is also one of the most serious contenders.

So here's how you know the ending is real. His totem was never the spinning top. It was his ring. Everytime he was awake he doesn't have the ring on his finger. Also everytime you see the grandparent he is in the real world (you can see this in the movie itself), at the end his children are wearing different clothes than when he's dreaming. This is from the movie story itself. One last pointer is that the kids at the end are different cast kids, in the credits there are 2 different kids playing the same role, and Michael Caine was told that everytime he is in the scene he is in the real world

    • @Jang9851

The top not being Leo's totem has nothing to do with it. Totems are not imprinted on individuals the idea is that no one else is supposed to know how it behaves tangibly with his wife gone he can use still use that totem.
The ring is a red herring. This idea i see alot and its not true at all. The answer is actually truly subject to interpretation. Nolan said the point was Leo doesn't care i think he wanted to focus on that a shot of leo focused in the background and the top in the foreground would have been better as frame.
Nolan if he was forced to answer he could rationalize either way.

    • @markmccreadie6212
      @markmccreadie6212 8 днів тому

@@Jang9851it's completely true about the ring and you have no idea what you are talking about. Find one scene in the movie which is real where he has his ring on (spoiler, you can't). Plus Nolan told Cain that any scene he is in is real. Do more paying attention and research before commenting

    • @Jang9851
      @Jang9851 8 днів тому

@@markmccreadie6212 First off it’s a theory. There is no factual statement from Nolan saying the ring is his totem. Yes I have paid attention tot his movie more then you know pal.
You can only make an argument that becuse he wears it in the dreams vs in reality makes it his totem but that point does not clash with the logic I stated earlier which you failed to understand and the whole idea of a unique totem: Just because he uses Mals totem doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for him. Mal is dead is now therefore unique to him. Simply by the mere idea no one else intimately knows how it behaves in reality. Based on that concept it would be pretty basic flawed to use a mere piece of jewellery on a finger to allow the owner differentiate between reality and dreams.
Understand logic and do your research first before commenting.

Great reaction Stef like always, Christopher Nolan never disapoints hes a genius, some fun facts about this masterpiece Nolan’s attention to detail is second to none in the Level 1 in the dream sequence is the rain-denched street where you see a runaway train smashing through parked cars. To achieve this, Nolan had a train chassis put onto the engine of a tractor trailer. A great touch is that the state motto on all the car license plates says “The Alternate State.” The revolving corridor fight as little CGI it was filmed in two enormous airship sheds in Bedfordshire, England, the revolving set was originally going to be 40 feet long but, as the scene became more and more elaborate, Nolan decided to make it 100 feet long. The set they built rotated a full 360 degrees and they could control the direction it rotated and how fast it rotated. Nolan didn’t want any digital effects if possible, so even the lights were real and rigged up with electricity. Inception is a film about filmmaking
When creating Cobb’s team and the roles they play, Nolan relied on the creative team he knows - the filmmaking crew. So, the roles each character plays within the team reflects the roles you would have within a moviemaking team
    - Cobb is the director - the one with the vision and grand plan.
    - Arthur is the producer. As the Point Man, he does all the planning and research and pulls everything together to make sure the team can achieve Cobb’s plan.
    - Ariadne is the production designer. As the Architect, she creates the worlds where everything takes place.
    - Eames is the actor. As the Forger, he impersonates people and literally puts on an act.
    - Saito is the studio. The money man who finances everything and is ultimately the boss.
    - Fischer (Cillian Murphy) is the audience. Everything is created to be observed by him.
Keep up the amazing work you should react to TENET is another Nolan masterpiece.

Michael Caine revealed that upon reading the script, he asked Nolan which portions were dreams and which ones were the reality. “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it, and I said to him, ‘I don’t understand where the dream is.’ I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So, get that - if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.” So the end was reality ;)

The point of not seeing if the totem keeps spinning is a beautiful expression of letting go. Cobb doesn't care if he's awake or asleep anymore. Once he sees his kids he's there to stay. That is the reality he chooses, even if it's not true. I like that as viewers we don't find out for sure. Because it's a beautiful way of saying that once you find happiness, real happiness, does it really matter if it's real?

There's actually a clip going around of Christian Bale being asked about the ending to the Dark Knight Rises and whether he believes Alfred saw Bruce in a "what if" happy moment or if Bruce was really there with Selena. Bale goes on to say that the film lets you choose the ending and that he believes Alfred and Bruce really saw each other. It's the same with this film. You can choose to believe Cobb made it home to his children or you can decide the top kept spinning. You could ask Nolan himself what he intended and I feel not even he would know what to say. Lovely cinema. Lovely lovely art.

the canon for both these movies is that the final scene is the real world
for rises, this is because there is a scene at the end when technicians tell lucius fox that the autopilot software has been fixed by Wayne and was fully operational a long time ago, Batman ejected himself into the water off screen and swam to the shore while the Bat kept flying further away, Bruce made Batman a symbol of hope and heroism and went on to live a 2nd life
for inception, by the sound and motion you can tell its toppling over, it doesnt do that in dreams, we can see it in the scene with 80yo saito, the totem is spinning flawlessly throughout their whole long dialogue, Cobb walking away from it only means he got over his constant worry of being in a dream (like we seem him worry before him and arthur go to the helicopter towards the beginning of the movie) and he lets go of the need to confirm it, he's a free happy man

Have you heard of Ariadne's inception theory? So, according to it, Fischer was never the real target of inception but Cobb was, and Ariadne was hired through Saito by his father-in-law to make him forgive himself for killing Mal. If you ever rewatch this movie, remember to pay closer attention to everything she says and does :)

Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest film makers of our time. I also like David Fincher (Seven, Social Network) and Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Prisoners). If he's attached to the project it's a certainty I will be watching it. I noticed you have watched a few of his movies already (Interstellar, Dark Knight Trilogy). You should check out Memento and Dunkirk.

in my opinion: at the end he wasn't dreaming anymore. During the entire movie he couldn't see the faces of his 2 children, they never turn to see him. At the end, they turn around and run to him... all good. And in my opinion, on the last frame they show for 0.04 seconds, the object started to wobble

She didn't went for the extreme, because when they were sharing a dream for a long time, Mal was convinced that the dream was real. In order for Cobb to take her out of the dream, he had to plant the idea "this world is not real" into her. It worked while they were in the dream, yes. But when she woke up, the idea was still there of course. So unless Cobb extracted or planted a new idea in her mind, wherever she goes, she will ALWAYS think the world isn't real.

According to Nolan, the point of the ending isn't to question whether or not the whole thing was real. Cobb had found his happiness (to finally be able to see his children again), and therefore, it doesn't matter to him any more. He's complete.

What people forget about the totem is that they say numerous times, in the film, that no one can use anyone else's totem. The top is not Cobb's, it's his wifes! So think about that for a minute now lol.

Hey, another great movie pick by your Patreon friends.
One thing I didn't like was the new format with your face in a bubble. I have seen other creators who do commentary/reactions do this too, but it is never as good as the room/full person with the smaller floating rectangle displaying the movie (in my opinion of course). As we (the audience) have seen the movie already, we want to see the commentary/reactions mostly.
If I could suggest some great TV Shows coming to Netflix on September 15:
    - Band of Brothers.
    - The Pacific.
It might not be something you would watch on your own, but it is always great to see people expand their experiences and taste through masterpieces (like Lord of The Rings, Gladiator, Interstellar, etc).
As always your videos have excellent content due to your curiosity, empathy and humor.
Anyways, this is the second time I write this because my last comment didn't go through somehow. Have a good one.

It's been made pretty clear that he's not dreaming at the end. Any time Michael Caine is there is reality, the director has said for example. Also Cobb can never see his kids' faces when he's dreaming, but he can at the end. People like to mystery monger though. 😉

It's a cool movie. The travel and shifting of different perspectives made it confusing. That scene of her falling was most anti climatic way to involve a tragedy. The dialog before she leaps incredible. Would keep this in 7 or 8 of Chris N films.

Their subject, the mission, went through the same thing that Cobb went through with his wife. Lived a whole lifetime then woke up. What a freaking mind bender. The top was actually Mal’s totem, not Dom’s. His totem is his wedding ring, because in his dreams they’re still together. So when he’s wearing his ring, he’s dreaming. It’s hard to see, but in the final scene, he isn’t wearing his ring. So he isn’t dreaming in the final scene.
