Yeah an example of this is his villainous role in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book series. Where he in-prisons The Authority or god and then tells the other angles he’s god.
What fascinates me in the Enochic works is that angelology actually makes heaven very much polytheistic just with its non-ruling 'gods' being termed as angels.
God was like watching Transformers and went “yo Enoch...you are Megatron!!! I mean Metatron! ...” and then He said unto satan “Autobots....roll out!!” ...god is such a comic book fan!!!
If one reads these texts literally and with a certain set of beliefs, the reader will have specific interpretations, but that is the challenge of interpreting religious texts and practically one's own personal life experiences (it doesn't have to be mystical). If anyone has read NDE (Near Death Experiences) or OBE (Out-Of-Body Experiences) stories, you might see the similarities to the story of Ishmael. Also, the word "heaven" can be interpreted differently based on the context of the story, but most people attribute it to mean a spiritual reality, even if it was describing physical reality (space or upper atmosphere). Ishmael's retelling of his experience when he returns must be an interpretation into both human understanding and language. Otherwise, the words to describe what is experienced, not to mention the interpretations, could not be recounted. If you consider the fact that he describes throne rooms and a chariot, one must ask why there is physicality in a non-physical reality? If Heaven is physical, then it is limited just as much as the physical reality. Also, he explains how he experienced time (was passed out for 1 hour). That means that heaven is also bound by time, no different than physical reality. If that is the case, then what difference is there between the two realities other than the "power level"? All of the experiences retold are simply an interpretation relative to the human experience. This occurs because Ishmael only understood the beliefs about reality in his time, that he was a physical being in human form and that he must have been created by a creator. He had no other way to explain what he knew, except in the way he did, which is based on kings, realms, superior beings, etc. Another way to re-interpret his experience would be to see it as 7 levels of consciousness, of which, the outer is the least aware to the inner, which is the most aware or fully conscious. The throne or chariot is the source of your own divinity (your source of power) and the being on the throne was the fully aware nature of Ishmael, but he did not recognize this. Ismael faced his own divinity, but could not understand because of his belief that he must be a mortal being, bound in flesh. The angels he described makes very little practical sense, to distribute earth's naturally observed phenomenon as being individual beings called angels. Why would a being in humanoid form be responsible for earth's natural observables (earthly nature, space objects, etc) if not because they were deified by the humans? Another way to interpret the idea of angels is to see them as a type of consciousness (archetypes) rather than actual formed beings (the forms being the natural phenomenons including planets and stars). These archetypes of consciousness is simply the understanding that all things in reality are conscious. The force or power attributed to them is again, in relation to Ishmael's belief about himself being a "weak" human being. The entire experience should have been a moment of enlightenment about himself and his connections to everything in reality, but instead, his beliefs about himself separated his experience as being something outside of himself. This is true of most people's beliefs about the individual vs. the perceived exterior reality. The first throne is the outer reality, while the seventh throne is the inner reality, hence each "greater" throne being inside the previous "lesser" throne.
Gracious God, you are the author of my salvation, the keeper of my heart. In your love, I find solace, in your mercy, I find redemption. Truly, you are my everything!
Religion is more interesting when you're not religious. It's much easier to have a broader perspective and just follow the evidence when you don't need to take things personally.
Angels seem very much like gods in their own right, albeit under the jurisdiction of the head of the pantheon YHVH. The Hebrew "Bene elohim" is cognate with the Ugaritic word "bn 'il" which means "sons of gods." The same meaning can be applied to the Sanskrit "Devaputra" which refers to heavenly deities in Indic traditions. Hekhalot literature is also reminiscent of a Buddhist story in which a king named Nimi is given a tour of heaven and hell by the god Shakra's charioteer Matali. There are other similar ascension stories like those found in the Divine Comedy and the Zoroastrian Book of Arda Viraf.
One of the historic ways groups could approach pushing their religion on neighbouring or conquered groups was to "demote" the indigenous Gods and make them subordinate to their imposed God. Rather than trying to erase the names of the local gods from memory, which wouldn't work, they could be co-opted into the newly dominant hierarchy as lesser gods, demigods, or in the case of an imposed monotheistic religion as "semi-divine beings in service of God" e.g., Angels. It's very possible some, or all, of the biblical angels were originally worshipped as gods by some absorbed group in the distant past.
@@Pushing_Pixels Demoting gods to angels - I just did a reply about this. It is still happening. In fact, I have seen Jesus called Michael and Metatron called Mithras in different places.
I wonder if profit Mohammed PBUH Developed his vision of the night ride from the book of Enoch Prophet. Mohammed also said the Jesus had the power to turn dirt into birds and I believe this power is attributed to Jesus in some of the non-canonical gospels
I have a couple questions: 1.) What translation are you using for 3 Enoch? I'm interested in reading it for myself. 2.) If the Enochic traditions are considered to be a "spin-off" of Enoch's brief appearance in Genesis, are there any scholarly theories regarding the origins and purpose behind Enoch's first appearance?
I really enjoy your podcast. You are non-judgemental or pushing an agenda (Yeah, I know religion scholars aren't suppose to do that.) Your videos are helping the public to understand the cultures and beliefs of our highly mobile world.
Do you have any plans to extend this Enoch series to talk about Enoch's prominence in Latter day Saint tradition? Or LDS biblical exegesis (Melchizedek for example) in general?
Not to mention that the main story arc of 3 Enoch bears resemblance to the Book of Abraham - OT figure is given knowledge of the inner workings of heaven and the universe...
I certainly hope so. These three videos on Enoch, Melchizedek, and Metatron, and their connections to each other are some of my favorites he's done so far!
I just found out Mani the prophet (d. 277 AD) has been claimed to have re-written the Third Book of Enoch for his religion. But this video says the third book of Enoch is fifth or sixth c., so who copied who?
not gonna lie, I'd love to see George Lucas, James Cameron, and some other writer/director's that made some really awesome movies, collab to make each Book of Enoch a movie trilogy 🤔
Omg, I rewatched the videos on first two enochs following the recent episode of Ahsoka, and wished there were one on the third. This hommage to geekery is heartwarming.
The use of Enoch from Ahsoka made me realise something. His inclusion seems to be a reference to this book, seeming to imply that Grand Admiral Thrawn in his exile now considers himself to be a god of sorts, with his stormtroopers becoming his cult-like worshipers.
This seems a lot like Dante's Inferno but in heaven. It makes me wonder if Dante Alighieri read the third book of Enoch and was inspired by it as part of his construction of the circles of hell. Love your videos!
I saw another video on Third Enoch which said the vision contains an early version of purgatory. Maybe the apocalypse of Peter and Apocalypse of Paul took this up and then influenced Dante.
Can you imagine being the guy who wrote the bits explaining where thunder, lightning and rain come from thinking “I can get away with this because no one is EVER gonna work out who these things work”
Surprised you didn't throw in a Supernatural reference, since Metatron plays a significant role in that as "the scribe of God" and at one point does usurp power. As always, this is fascinating stuff.
@@gabrielpmo I would agree it doesn't rely on it, but he does reference pop culture a LOT. He often ties in his religious studies topic of the day with topical stuff that references it. I would say it isn't too surprising to see someone shocked he didn't mention a big example. For me, I was hoping more for the Dogma reference with Alan Rickman.
There are 2 Enochs in they book of Genesis- one is of the bloodline of Cain and one was of the bloodline of Seth. Perhaps the mystic Enoch of the third book of Enoch is from the bloodline of Cain which would explain a lot. Odd how you didn’t mention 2 Biblical Enochs in your video as it is definitely worth mentioning.
Great video ! The section on the “2 powers in heaven “ was very fascinating. The traditional mainstream Christian position on this is that the “Son of man” identified as the 2nd power is of course Jesus ( John 9:35-37 Jesus identifying himself as the Son of Man) As you mentioned the “Son of Man” is also associated with an Angel . The traditional standard Christian belief is that this angel is not merely ontologically an Angel but rather a deity being ( being one with God) . This figure is called “The Angel of the LORD (YWHW) “ in the Old Testament . (Example Judges 13:21-22 where the Angel of the LORD is called “God”) Christians of course believe this Angel of the LORD , and the Son of Man are different titles for the same person Jesus . The New Testament in Jude even subtly makes this connection. In Jude 1:5 It says Jesus rescued his people out of Egypt . (some translations say “Lord” but in this context Lord is Jesus indicated by Jude 1:4 ) In Exodus 14:19 it says “the Angel of God” who was travelling ahead of Israel’s army withdrew from them. To summarize, “ the Angel of YWHW” which is “The second power of heaven” and is associated as being God (Judges 12:21-22) is understood by us Christians to be Jesus. Which is why in Christianity we believe there are multiple persons that comprise the 1 nature/being/essence of God aka the Trinity. We believe the 3 persons associated who share “one name” are the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ( exemplified as Matthew 28:19) That’s just our opinion of course. Good video

This book is me as a 12 year old dozing off during BSF and outlining an elaborate Bible fanfiction that I would convert into a sequel narrative to Diablo II My brand of Lutherans was not big on angels or saints or anything like that but why would god need a bunch of entities to control something as simple as the weather?
Not only the Metatron stuff being bitheistic, I think the idea that God consults with the angels before acting and that there in an angel each for controlling universal forces is downright polytheistic. No wonder the chariot people were considered heretics.
The angels were originally the ruling council of gods. They were downgraded from god to angels as Judaism moved towards monotheism, but they maintained some of their specialist duties.
Enoch becomes metatron, wow i never saw that twist coming I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel "BEHOLD THE METATRON, HERALD OF THE ALMIGHTY AND VOICE OF THE ONE TRUE..." *FIRE EXTINGUISHER*
You should talk about Kālī. The Malayalapuzha Bhadrakālī Temple and Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple are some of the most powerful Bhadrakālī temples in the Southwestern Indian state of Kerala, where the worship of Kālī is popular.
I suspect that the cult of Metatron may have been a very specific, if perhaps unconscious, means of countering the threat of the Jesus movement, which, after all, in the early days, would have seemed like a variant of Judaism. “We have an authentic god-hero, already mentioned in our scriptures, not that nobody from Nazareth!”
I have to say, this contain some absolutely fantastic imagery. So many awe-inspiring concepts for literature that I want to see put to the screen. I know some people are saying just watch Evangelion, lol.
Yes, they did. 3rd Enoch was written in the 5th century. The writers were already aware of the Julian calendar. If you want to dig deeper, the Enochian Cycle literature during the Jewish Second Temple period was tied to the so-called "Essene Priestly Calendar" (because it was used at Qumran) which has 364 days in opposition to the lunisolar Hebrew Calendar's 353-355 days (plus 30-day leap month).
Rather, I think the 365 number is more related to Enoch’s earthly lifespan, as in Genesis 5:23, “ [23] And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:”
The Son of Man as seen in the OT and particularly in Daniel and Ezekiel are clear references to the second person of the Blessed Trinity. Isiah somewhat crystallises the idea eventually when he prophesies His incarnation.
Reading into the Enoch tradition recently, I come to the insight that Enoch-Matatron is a type of Christ, that there are many competing myths within Judaism and that they are brought together into greater coherence in patristic Christianity. Enoch, the ‘7th antediluvian patriarch’ as Andrei Orlov styles him, is a character described in a literature purporting to be ancient pseudepigraphically but actually written fairly late, even in the Christian era as the 3rd pamphlet on Enoch appears to be. Some scholars, notably Margaret Barker, find in enochic literature traces of deep strata of messianic faith, an apocalyptic cult centered on the royal house of David. While I think she’s onto something it’s not provable from extant texts and archaeology. Orlov explains literary correspondences between figures in Hebrew esoteric tradition and exoteric canonical scripture that enriches understanding of personages familiar in the latter, uncovering literary tropes that link them in a web of mimicry. The resultant picture is far more engaging than the Sunday school version of religion. As a practicing Orthodox person, albeit monolingual in English, getting acquainted with this kind of literature gets me out of ruts and stale thinking. The canonical scripture is frequently very terse and often obscure. It begs to be fleshed out and the Enochic material helps.
40 years ago I said the name Metatron out loud to my mom, a devout flavor of the day believer, and she got freaked out until she later confirmed with me she asked her "elders" about the word and they said "Its OK" "Tetragramaton" freaked her out as well. She was sure I had turned to the Dark Side., when she wanted me there with her on Kolob.
"365 thousand" is an interesting number of eyes 🤔 knowing that ancient Hebrews often used "a thousand" to imply an indefinite but quite long period of time rather than _specifically_ "1,000", and knowing there's 365(.24...) days in a year, I wonder if the implication is that he had "an eye on every day through all the years", or something to that effect? Though I've no idea if _they_ knew about the ~365 day year at the time 🤔
@@ajaychopra46 No, the Egyptian calendar already had 365 days before that. Though the Julian calendar would have already been known before 3 Enoch was written.
Coincidentally, the "light of 365000 suns" equates to EXACTLY as bright of a "cloud" as the towers of the current largest solar-power farms,- if you had been the target of the mirrors. Or in other words, specifically the specifications and appearance of Saurons Eye tower. Once again, Tolkiens scriptural awareness shines through.

What fascinates me in the Enochic works is that angelology actually makes heaven very much polytheistic just with its non-ruling 'gods' being termed as angels.
God MADE the angels. God cannot be dethroned, He sits above all the angels forever.
I am METATRON BE NOT AFRAID
*heavy metal 🎸 *
I always remember Metatron being the central antagonist in the third book of the Dark Materials trilogy the Amber Spyglass.
Honestly, His Dark Materials seems to me a more plausible cosmology than historic Judaism or Christianity.
I remember him as Herald of the Almighty and the Voice of the One True God.
I remember him as Antagonist of Season 8? Of Supernatural.

People when they hear "Metatron" imagine either ;
1. a Pokémon
2. a tranformer
3) an anime girl from date a a live (which girl is a spoiler, btw)
4: A self-obsessed charismatic robot imbued with a soul.
5) A gaslighting manipulative (possibly mind-controlling) highly punchable piece of work

The usage of the Enoch image from star wars is fantastic. I'm familiar with book one and two. Thanks for the review of book 3.
How could you time this SO RIGHT with Star Wars Enoch debut just a few hours ago?!
God was like watching Transformers and went “yo Enoch...you are Megatron!!! I mean Metatron! ...” and then He said unto satan “Autobots....roll out!!” ...god is such a comic book fan!!!

Any day you release a video is a good day. Thank-you.

I could listen to this man talk about history and writing for hours
For the ones mentioning anime and things check out El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. It's an old PS 3 game.
I am not a religious person, but I love your content and use it to improve my listening skills. Thank you for your work.
@@Pushing_Pixels I can't help but think of the story in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As Satan would say in the Book of Job, "Skin for skin."
@@Pushing_Pixels Demoting gods to angels - I just did a reply about this. It is still happening. In fact, I have seen Jesus called Michael and Metatron called Mithras in different places.
I wonder if profit Mohammed PBUH Developed his vision of the night ride from the book of Enoch
Prophet. Mohammed also said the Jesus had the power to turn dirt into birds and I believe this power is attributed to Jesus in some of the non-canonical gospels
I have a couple questions:
1.) What translation are you using for 3 Enoch? I'm interested in reading it for myself.
2.) If the Enochic traditions are considered to be a "spin-off" of Enoch's brief appearance in Genesis, are there any scholarly theories regarding the origins and purpose behind Enoch's first appearance?
I really enjoy your podcast. You are non-judgemental or pushing an agenda (Yeah, I know religion scholars aren't suppose to do that.) Your videos are helping the public to understand the cultures and beliefs of our highly mobile world.
He did kind of push an agenda that Enoch is worthless.
13:20 god has a significant other - nice ❤. When I was a kid I thought god must be lonely and that’s why he cries (rain) so much.
When you were a kid you cried because God was our Father in Heaven.
Thank you so much. Extremely detailed event to event explanation of Enoch. More info for personal mystical experience.
not gonna lie, I'd love to see George Lucas, James Cameron, and some other writer/director's that made some really awesome movies, collab to make each Book of Enoch a movie trilogy 🤔
Fantastic editing in this episode.
Omg, I rewatched the videos on first two enochs following the recent episode of Ahsoka, and wished there were one on the third.
This hommage to geekery is heartwarming.
Dr. Henry, I am thankful with the frequent uploads. Always looking forward with new content from you and Dan McClellan.
the sooner people would understand the "Enoch" can become a billion dollar movie the faster we would get this over due film about him
I’ve been waiting for this!
The use of Enoch from Ahsoka made me realise something. His inclusion seems to be a reference to this book, seeming to imply that Grand Admiral Thrawn in his exile now considers himself to be a god of sorts, with his stormtroopers becoming his cult-like worshipers.
Powerful video with lots of powerful insights and shares. Thank you.
This seems a lot like Dante's Inferno but in heaven. It makes me wonder if Dante Alighieri read the third book of Enoch and was inspired by it as part of his construction of the circles of hell. Love your videos!
Dante was inspired by the Apocalypse of Paul, itself inspired by the Apocalypse of Peter.
I saw another video on Third Enoch which said the vision contains an early version of purgatory. Maybe the apocalypse of Peter and Apocalypse of Paul took this up and then influenced Dante.
Maybe, though Dante's Paradiso is quite different.
That's what I thought when he described somebody turning into eyeballs of fire, "This is hell".

Surprised you didn't throw in a Supernatural reference, since Metatron plays a significant role in that as "the scribe of God" and at one point does usurp power.
As always, this is fascinating stuff.
Because this channel doesn't rely much on pop culture
Though he redeemed himself in the end.
@@gabrielpmoonly on pop religion
@@gabrielpmo I would agree it doesn't rely on it, but he does reference pop culture a LOT. He often ties in his religious studies topic of the day with topical stuff that references it. I would say it isn't too surprising to see someone shocked he didn't mention a big example.
For me, I was hoping more for the Dogma reference with Alan Rickman.
What other big examples would there be?
Three videos in two weeks?! You’re on a roll!
Imteresting!
Your channel really inspired me to start my own theology UA-cam Channel!
THANK YOU!
Great video !
The section on the “2 powers in heaven “ was very fascinating.
The traditional mainstream Christian position on this is that the “Son of man” identified as the 2nd power is of course Jesus ( John 9:35-37 Jesus identifying himself as the Son of Man)
As you mentioned the “Son of Man” is also associated with an Angel .
The traditional standard Christian belief is that this angel is not merely ontologically an Angel but rather a deity being ( being one with God) . This figure is called “The Angel of the LORD (YWHW) “ in the Old Testament . (Example Judges 13:21-22 where the Angel of the LORD is called “God”)
Christians of course believe this Angel of the LORD , and the Son of Man are different titles for the same person Jesus .
The New Testament in Jude even subtly makes this connection. In Jude 1:5 It says Jesus rescued his people out of Egypt . (some translations say “Lord” but in this context Lord is Jesus indicated by Jude 1:4 )
In Exodus 14:19 it says “the Angel of God” who was travelling ahead of Israel’s army withdrew from them.
We believe the 3 persons associated who share “one name” are the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ( exemplified as Matthew 28:19)
That’s just our opinion of course. Good video
I went through Catholic school in the sixties and never heard that Jesus was in the OT or that the angel of god was Jesus.
Very imaginative. I often appreciate this channels offerings

Thank you for making these videos. They're fascinating to me
Not only the Metatron stuff being bitheistic, I think the idea that God consults with the angels before acting and that there in an angel each for controlling universal forces is downright polytheistic. No wonder the chariot people were considered heretics.
saints could be interpreted as "deities" too, even though a Catholic would argue against it.
The angels were originally the ruling council of gods. They were downgraded from god to angels as Judaism moved towards monotheism, but they maintained some of their specialist duties.
@@PhoenixFlame321 I disagree, saint have just power because of their communion with God, being nothing apart from him.
Enoch becomes metatron, wow i never saw that twist coming
I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel
"BEHOLD THE METATRON, HERALD OF THE ALMIGHTY AND VOICE OF THE ONE TRUE..." *FIRE EXTINGUISHER*
Could this council of angels be a relic from the older "divine council" of El that is still mentioned in some Elohistic texts?
I think that's certain. See "The Older Testament" by Margaret Barker.
Was expecting a sick collab, but this works too
You should talk about Kālī. The Malayalapuzha Bhadrakālī Temple and Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple are some of the most powerful Bhadrakālī temples in the Southwestern Indian state of Kerala, where the worship of Kālī is popular.
Okay can't watch this now but Esoterica did a video on this topic and now Religion for Breakfast does a video on it, exciting
I have been looking forward to this one for so long
Interesting choice using a page of Genesis Rabbah to represent Rabbinic Judaism at 2:35

Excellent video and is fascinating to learn about this!
Any chance that the 365 references in Enoch have a connection to time? Did they have a 365 day year calendar at the time?
Yes, they did. 3rd Enoch was written in the 5th century. The writers were already aware of the Julian calendar. If you want to dig deeper, the Enochian Cycle literature during the Jewish Second Temple period was tied to the so-called "Essene Priestly Calendar" (because it was used at Qumran) which has 364 days in opposition to the lunisolar Hebrew Calendar's 353-355 days (plus 30-day leap month).
@@andrewsuryali8540 thank you for the reply.
Rather, I think the 365 number is more related to Enoch’s earthly lifespan, as in Genesis 5:23, “
[23] And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:”
@@danpavelko8414 You want a better connection with the sun? Check out En-men-dur-ana and see if you see any parallels
The Son of Man as seen in the OT and particularly in Daniel and Ezekiel are clear references to the second person of the Blessed Trinity. Isiah somewhat crystallises the idea eventually when he prophesies His incarnation.
Metatron sounds like a Transformer
Lol
There is a robot character named Mettaton.
40 years ago I said the name Metatron out loud to my mom, a devout flavor of the day believer, and she got freaked out until she later confirmed with me she asked her "elders" about the word and they said "Its OK"
"Tetragramaton" freaked her out as well. She was sure I had turned to the Dark Side., when she wanted me there with her on Kolob.
Love how people who are all up in their obsessive religion don't actually know the words or what they mean.
Until you said Kolob I was 90% sure your mom was an evangelical

Amazing video and content. This is exactly the kind of channel I was looking for. Just subscribed to it.
Though I've no idea if _they_ knew about the ~365 day year at the time 🤔
Maybe because Concept of 365 days a year comes from Julian Calendar which is offical Catholic solar Calendar .😅
@@ajaychopra46 No, the Egyptian calendar already had 365 days before that.
Though the Julian calendar would have already been known before 3 Enoch was written.
I really need a 3 Enoch anime now. Nothing but an anime could do justice to these over the top descriptions.
6:45 this is exactly the style of writing used in Buddhist texts. Like the vajra prajnaparamita sutra.
I've never seen transformers but Metatron sounds like it could be one of them
