Thank you so much for this! I just acquired a Sountrac M Series console and have been looking everywhere to find anything on it. Got it to work finally! Sounds good so far but would love to see more videos on this from you guys! Great vid!!

Thanks I hope you are enjoying your console! So far after some recordings we are very happy with it, although it still needs a bit of work(some noises that need to be fixed). I’m working on a video about the routing here in the studio, I’m trying to get back to consistent uploads because I’ve not been very active in the past year..

We have a project studio and I've gone back and forth on owning a console. The most restraining part being cost. But me and my business partner have kinda drafted up plans for using our 500 series modules and constructing our racks in the style of a console then using patchbays and a purple audio fader pack to make routable channel strips. I'm sure its a common idea to use 500 series in this way but theres just something magical about having a fader and touching the music

Funny thing is, after about 8 months trying to fully restore the console while using it, I’m also currently thinking about going the same route right now.. After a few sessions where we tracked through the console, it just seems you can’t get much of a difference from a budget analog console. The biggest drawbacks though were reliability and size.. For our small control room even a 24 channel chassis was just too big. So right now I’m researching building a “console” with 500 series components as well!

@@TrailOfSound well my initial drawings kinda went like this:
500 series rack of 10/6 preamps -> patchbay1 -> rack of comps (if comps are even necessary, we mostly track so idk if I'll do a rack of comps at first) ->patchbay2 -> rack of EQs -> patchbay 3 -> purple audio faders (or equivalent)
Don't really care about busses because we don't mix in analog but if I wanted to, I could just make a bus from the DAW and patch it out to the board (I will call it a board to make it easier). Cue isn't an issue because we use the EVO 16 and that thing already has an awesome low latency cue system, plus expandability up to 24 inputs. The more I look into it, the more I like it. Almost treating each channel as a plugin with reaper would be easy to do as well.
pricing wise I could get some awesome unit kits from places like AML and CAPI for the modules for low cost. I did a cost analysis of API 1608-ii and each channel was like $3k so my thought was I could make something that suited my needs for under $900 a channel and more customizable, sounds like a good deal to me!

If you wanted to be really extra, you could throw in a line level amp rack as well!

Yes that’s what I was thinking as well! Kits from AML or Sound Skulptor, preamps first and then a couple of compressors because I like tracking through them. Down the road add some EQs if needed and step by step build channel strips! Yes if you go DIY I think you can get about half to 1/3 of the price of a console channel depending on your needs (without the faders though). We are exactly in the same boat right now!

Also if you are into SSL EQs check Link Audio Design, just found them and their EQ line seems really tempting!

@@TrailOfSound that would be great coz maybe i might get one to myself and if you would make a video on how to use it with a daw and all these routings im still a newbie in analog world

I am a newbie as well, I am discovering everything through this process!! Sure I am still working on the setup and I’ve had a bad-timed setback, but I plan to do a video on the whole wiring and everything else we are doing to be able to track and mix through the console (as well as the very few analog stuff we have right now). I hope to make this video in September!
