- I was asked to do a comparison video on various LED headlights from American made to those from overseas.
I tested the light intensity, color temperature and beam pattern of four different types of bulbs.
Here are the test results:
OEM Halogen Bulbs:
This was the original headlight on my motorcycle
320 foot-candles
3000 Kelvin (yellow portion of spectrum)
H11 LED replacement bulbs:
640 foot-candles
6000 Kelvin (pure white light)
Adjustable beam pattern
I got these from LED Factory Mart in China
$59.99 USD with free shipping

Victory Beacon LED Headlight
600 foot-candles
5000 Kelvin (pure white light)
I got this from Witch Doctors in USA
$367.99 with free shipping in USA

Another great video! Unbiased scientific test. You are clear and concise as well. Very well done.
Great job! Thanks for taking the time to put this together with hard facts! Color temperature matters more than people realize, so your K readings are good info!
Well done Paul. I was very impressed with the LED replacement bulbs. Especially the fact that the beam is adjustable. They also look like they put more light on the road in front of the bike. Getting old means I need light on the road in my lane not wasted in the ditches. Very professionally done Paul........... Rob
Thanks Rob. Much appreciated.
Job very well done Paul., This should end the controversy on the various group pages. I did go with the LED H11 bulbs, was not a big deal to move the wiring harness, but as you say, the front fairing needs to be removed to do it.. Thanks again. Especial thanks to the tidbit about rotating the light after loosening the allen key
Yes I agree another great Video , that’s a lot work to show everyone the answer of what kind of light we need Thank you
Another great video Paul! You are an asset to the Victory community sir!
WOW!!!!! Now that is an excellent comprehensive test!! I had been thinking about just buying the H111 bulbs....
Great video! Thanks for going through all the trouble to make this video for us victory riders. I just bought an 2011 Jackpot, and the first thing I did, was an led headlight upgrade. I went with the $120 overseas version and I must say they are nice but... the lenses are made of acrylic not glass like the stock light and they will scratch easy if you use the wrong kind of rag to clean it.
Hi from Australia Paul. Your videos are fantastic. I think you and I have the same bike. Very happy to see this vid. The headlight on my old 1979 BMW is way better than the one on my Victory CCT and you have now confirmed the OEM light is crap which is what I thought anyway. I have been looking at an led light for mine and now I am much better informed. Also about to build the top box rack. Thanks!
Extremely serious research! Thank you very much Paul for the work done and for the useful information!
Brilliant video, mate!
I'll share it on my local forum.
Good stuff. Lots of work to prepare. Thank you Paul.
Extremely useful and well thought-out test. Thanks so much for sharing this information!
Great video. No nonsense and awesome info. Thanks again.
Great video and I appreciate you keeping a solid control to accurately compare each bulb! If you do another video like this in the future, I'd suggest a couple of things that can allow relating to real-world application:
1- Take measurements as you did, but at multiple distances, and in multiple locations for the spread to see how well the light scatters and if it's usable light where it needs to be.
2- I like your objectivity, but maybe add some comments on what you think of the lights that you might not easily be able to test but might stand out as a red flag to you.
Paul you rock brother! you answered all the questions i had about these lights and then some. and wow the effort you put in to make the vid, i cant remember the last time i cleaned up the basement, LOL.
I had to find the vacuum cleaner and use it... Lol.
Oh well, at least it is done for another few years.
Really enjoyed that, been trying to find a video that showed a direct controlled comparison :)
Thank you for the work you completed....very eye opening to the facts
Awesome comparison!
Best damn video light comparison ever man love it, h11 led rocks
Wonderful video demo on motorcycle headlamp mods Paul.
Thanks. Ride safe.
Amazing work buddy. Am thinking to color the led stock backlight from chrome into black
Great video! Thank you Paul! Well done
very good and informative review, thank you
awesome job once again.
This was a great great video and I am still somewhat torn. I have heard about the lean angle with the victory brand high beams. Hmmmm........ a lot to think about.
Great video, best I've seen so far. PS, I don't even have a victory.
Great video.
Great video! Thank you!
If you still have the lights I'd like to see a spill comparison on a lean angle.
I replaced a broken standard headlight with the victory led and when leaning in. The led spill dives with the lean leaving a large dark area in the direction of travel.
I am looking at purchasing a new standard headlight and putting in HiD.
Great job..
Amazing video man, nice
Thanks for the video works great
Where is the victory light manufactured at.
Love your videos!
Thanks Kevin.
great vid very scientific!
Good vid
i love the led system in my magnum
That's a very helpful video Paul...thank you for that. My question is since I have a Wolo air horn installed in my fairing my mechanic said that there wouldn't be room for the HID light because of the ballast. Does the Victory LED headlight kit take up any extra room in the fairing? Thanks again!
Hi Janice, if your air horn is installed beside the radio like mine is, (watch my video here: ua-cam.com/video/BNK-PHl9uj0/v-deo.html) then it is far enough away from the headlight to not interfere with any type of light that you are putting in. The ballast for the HID are very small and are connected to the bulb by cable so you can place them anywhere around the bulbs. The Victory LED headlight is the same size as the halogen assembly so there shouldn't be any problem installing one of those as well. I have tried various types on my XCT (Halogen, HID, LED) and have had no problem installing them.
Paul on the bulb with victoryhid.com did U purchase just the bulbs or do we need to purchase ballast as well?
The bulbs and ballasts come together as a set. You can buy a single set or a double set if you want to change the high and low beams together.
The test was very informative however what about real world use? I have the factory halogen in my CCT now and want to know if the Victory LED performance is worth the cost?
I show this in my video. The results are also posted in the description. The Victory LED is twice as bright as the factory halogen (600fc vs 300fc) while also doubling the color temperature (6,000K vs 3,000K). You could also watch my HID Video to see if they will be better for you.
Thank you for putting out such great content! My question is, I heard the LED lamps from overseas has caused some folks to have issues with their cruise control and radio. That's been the only reason why I haven't got it is cause I'm afraid it might happen to me. What are you able to say about that?
For the single season that I used the overseas headlight it did not affect my cruise. I can not say about the radio as I have never had the radio on since owning the bike.
Paul, thanks for the helpful videos. I've watched a couple to do some work on my CCT 13. In some videos, you have the bike upright and in others its on the kickstand. What device are you using to hold the bike upright?
I use a wide scissor jack that I place under the chin. You can see my jacks in this video: ua-cam.com/video/rG_-ETsu0Uk/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching.
So, am I understanding that the led bulbs in the halogen housing are actually the best? Most people shun those who swap bulbs in none projector housings it seems, but if they work best...I may be returning my amazon LED headlight as soon as it arrives it would appear.
Even though this video compares LED's, I got a lot of negative comments because I didn't include HID lights. I told them that I don't have any HID's, so a nice company sent me a set and I made a video showing the same tests using HID's.
So, in my opinion only, the configuration that I like best is an HID in the low beam and LED insert for the high beam for instant on use. That's how I like it... your means may vary.
Where did you get that tour pack hanger?
I made it. You can see my video here:
ua-cam.com/video/PFEDRoKNIvo/v-deo.html
In the end, did you change out your OEM light? In your opinion is the Beacon unit from Victory worth the $$$?
I have had the beacon light in my bike for almost 2 years now. I like it... was it worth the money? I suppose, it's a lot better than stock.
Paul which headlight did U end up with in your bike?
Hi Nick, currently I have the Victory LED headlight unit, but a company called victoryhid.com gave me some HID lights (I made another video with them) and I like them better. So I am going to switch my low beam to HID and use the H11 LED model on this video for the high beam since it is instant on. This setup will be the maximum brightness and they both happen to be 6,000 k in temperature so it will really brighten up the road. I will mount them in my stock halogen fixture that came with my bike.
Paul would you get the 5000 or 6000 Kelvin bulbs. I don't want to fry the wiring.
These numbers represent the color temperature of the light.
5000 is more white while 6000 tends to start getting into a blue.
I find the 6000 more my taste as it penetrates further and people tend to notice it more.
It's not a deep blue, just a tad. 8000 would be a deeper blue and 10,000 or 12,000 would be into the purple range.
Everyone has a different taste, but for me I like the 6000 k range.
The current that it draws is unchanged.
Noted, appreciate your comments
could I get your honest opinion there is a big price difference between the victory one and the overseas one I am looking to buy a new headlight would you say the overseas one is better then to Victory one.... I would really appreciate your help I don't like going cheap but I don't like getting screwed either
The overseas LED light is the least brightest light of all the ones that I tested. I would not ride at night with it.
If you don't do any night riding and just want an LED light then it would be your best choice because of the price.
If you do ride at night and want the brightest light, then in my opinion use the overseas H11 adjustable LED light that's in this video for your high beam and an HID replacement bulb for your low beam. I made an HID video as well that you can watch.
If you do go this way make sure the two bulbs color temperature is the same so it will look even.
Hope this helps.
thank you it really did help I guess I want a bright and cool looking light so I'm going to go with the victory one thank you so much for the video it really did help a lot hope you keep making videos like this
I know there's no more victory but I'll always be a victory rider
Ps. Thanks for the video!
You should include the VictoryHid.com bulbs in the comparison as well.. since they are actually affordable.
Already done in my second video. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/wSietWfUj-c/v-deo.html
Paul, what would you consider a decent price for a beacon original, black?
I am from Canada and things are expensive here. Back in the day, these were a $400 item. Today, if I needed one, I would probably only go as high as $200 for a new one, before looking for something else. But that is just my opinion.
@@PaulPomerleau do you think that beacon light is that much better than the rest of them?
That is a personal choice. I don't normally ride at night, but when I go into a dark underground parking area, I find the Beacon light to be very dim. For me I would not like it at night and would go with something else like a bright white halogen bulb for the low beam and an equivalent temperature LED for the high beam, because LED's are faster to light than halogens when you need your high beams quickly. But again, it's a personal choice.
@@PaulPomerleau I appreciate the information.
How can you tell if the headlight is OEM or aftermarket?
Yeah it's tricky. You have to check the specs on your bike to see what the manufacturer installed. Even half way through the year they could change it to something else. And on a used bike the previous owner could have pulled off an LED light and installed a different LED light. It's tough to say.
Paul Pomerleau my mistake I wasn’t very clear. I was referring to the led replacement headlight. I’m trying to stay away from buying a cheep knockoff.
It would say something like "Genuine Victory" as well as etched somewhere on the light or at least the Victory emblem and it would be more expensive than the knock-offs. My Victory LED Beacon headlight was over $400 whereas the knock-off version is under $100 but the quality really is terrible, I would not recommend it to anyone. In my opinion, if you want the best light to see at night I would use an HID for the low beam which is the brightest available and an LED replacement bulb for the high beam to give you the instant on high beams when you need it. But that is just my opinion. If you don't ride at night and just want something for looks then the LED headlight is what most go for.
Very “enlightening” 😜
Tell Steve I said hi.
