A Texan ranch owner was visiting UK and visited a local pub in a sheep farming area of Yorkshire. He struck up a conversation with a sheep farmer in the pub. After a bit of chit chat, the Texan asked the Yorkshireman a question. The conversation went thus:
Texan - “So, how long does it take you to go from one end of your farm to the other”.
Yorkshireman - “about 3 hours to walk from one end to the other”
Texan - “If I get in my car to drive from one end of my ranch to the other, it’ll take me a day”
Yorkshireman, after some pause for thought - “Aye, I used to have a car like that. ”🤣

I've said it before Alanna - in the UK whenever there's a "major incident" the Salvation Army set up a stand to give out tea to people affected. It's practically the definition of a major incident. Tea might be the reason why British people need less therapy. That and the stiff upper lip!

The problem with the Salvation Army giving out free tee at incidents is that it actively encourages tea addicts to commit criminal acts such as arson or even a terror incident just so they can get a tea fix. It's a big problem in areas of high poverty where many folk can't even afford a decent tea pot.

At home, although most of our cash crop acreage is devoted to growing highland arabica coffee, we have about 10 acres of tea. So, I hope you will appreciate that my family has a "thing" for tea! 🇰🇪. Most local people drink tea as chai (very milky, sweet, with nutmeg, alspice, and cinnamon), but "proper" tea is always brewed whole leaf, not bags! A mug is fine at breakfast, or just to enjoy a cuppa, but if we have guests to tea, then it's the Crown Derby. Gramma's prize Minton is in storage (I hope).

Don't feel guilty! Some teas should never be drunk with milk: Pu-Ehr, any green tea, Pai-Mu-Tan (white tea), even some scented black teas. You can even get away with drinking tea from a branded bag without milk, provided you don't infuse for any longer than a few seconds. You can then save the bag for further use and get more cups for your money!

    A historical note Alanna.
One reason for the popularity for tea use in the UK was that during the Industrial Revolution the population tended to move to the big cities. Knowingly or unknowingly tea became popular, and the reason that happened was due to the antiseptic quality of tea. This generally prevented diseases from spreading in very densely populated areas in the cities.
Thanks for a great analysis of one of our national habits.

I'm a fully tea-converted American... (gave up a 40 year soda habit, replaced it with hot tea). My only note is - it's Taylors of Harrogate that makes Yorkshire Tea. They also make my favorite Earl Grey. Ironically, I'm drinking a cup of that while I type this! I'm a fan of loose leaf, but, not so fanatically that I'll give anyone a hard time about bag tea. Bags steep faster, and loose leaf has a little more depth of flavor. If you're adding milk, I think the stronger bagged tea will work just fine. I haven't developed a taste for milk in tea, but, I use "too much" sugar.
And yes, those that microwave their tea are heathens, possibly raised by wolves....

The way you went so confidently into the dunking was really moving up a gear. My preference is for loose leaf tea but I will happily use tea bags too. The way to keep loose tea leaves from spoiling the experience is to get a teapot with a built in filter, push the plunger down when brewed and they are isolated from your brewed tea so it never gets 'stewed'.

From a Canadian born in England: there are many tiny steps to making good tea, but if youi do them all, it works! Cold water (more oxygen in it), full boil (water MUST be boiled), leaves are better than bags, warm the pot first, proper steeping time, china mug, and my mother would add use a silver spoon, but I don't go that far. I don't use milk but apparently, science has shown that milk first is best, although there is science on the other side as well. Along with a zillion opinions! If you follow all of these steps, tea just works somehow. :)

It is true that a kettle in Canada boil very much slower but now with induction hobs that kinda has changed. I too can only manage one coffee in the morning then switch to tea to keep the caffeine high within reason. For a special treat, go to the Savoy and have an afternoon tea I am sure you will enjoy it. 😁 Try spotted Dick with a nice cupa, I am sure the Canadian and US viewers would get a laugh. There are so many funny words and places that you could go to or talk about that have interesting names. Can i just say that back in the day when our grandmothers made tea they use to "warm the pot" meaning the Teapot was warmed up so that when making a mashing the hot water was not poured into a cold teapot of tea leaves , therefore staying hot and then covered with a tea cosy "A wooly jumper for the teapot" were sit on the table for what seemed ages until needed. So try it with a mug and a teabag , just warm your mug by filling from the hot tap and leave it standing until the kettle has boiled then empty the mug and proceed as normal with the now warm mug, i think you will notice the difference.

On my first visit to the US, I asked for a cup of tea in a restaurant. I was given a cup, a teabag and a little steel jug of hot water. My American partner explained what this was all about. It did not go well.
Good luck joining the Wars of the Roses by the way.

Here's one to try: M&S own brand, decaffeinated. It's in a teal box and it's amazing. Bought by mistake and it's been my favourite brew ever since. I couldn't care less about the decaff, it's just the nicest tea I've ever had.

@@tonijones8646 You know how every now and again you get an exceptional 'god brew'? That magical brew that is just so thirst quenching? I've had a higher hit rate for god brews with this tea than any I've ever had. Like I said, the decaf was a mistake for me, but if you are actually looking for a decaf, then you need to try this. Best English breakfast tea I've ever had. The wife agrees too, we've both switched from Yorkshire to this for no other reason than the taste.

Hi Alanna, I’m the same I will drink tea but prefer coffee. My coffee must be made from beans, I grind them as needed so they are really fresh and use water just off the boil. I take a bit of dark brown sugar in it with a spot of cream - it’s divine 😋
If I have to drink instant coffee it’s usually L’Or or Kenco Millicano. Tea, I’m with you I only drink Yorkshire.

Most tea bag teas are torn leaves...hence the "Tip" in PG Tips." Quick and easy which is why we we put that in our rooms at the B & B. But for breakfast we serve Twinings Everyday tea. It is lovely... here's the hack though boil the kettle and let it cool for a minute then make the tea with milk of course. Because it is a rolled leaf tea you can't put boiling water on it because it will burn... I do use it in teabags because I need to be quick. And if you want a black tea then add three drops of vinegar and it won't get the skin on the top - That is a life hack on tea!

The best tea is made in a tea pot. Like your granny used to make. I have to admit Yorkshire is now my favourite. Also tea made with soft water is better. You can drink it black as you don't need the milk to take the edge off like you do with hard water.

I don't drink tea, purely because the amount of sugar I need in it so I can drink it, is so bad, energy drinks probably have less sugar in! Family drinks tea though & you can usually tell the time of day based on when the kettles boiling lol
Custard cream or chocolate bourbon please

I used to drink instant coffee exclusively (and a lot of it) but as I got older my doc said to cut right back on it for health reasons. I'm now down to 2 mugs first thing in the morning and then only tea. For me it's Scottish Blend from Tesco (it's actually made by Unilever) which I have black with 1/2 to 1 spoon of sugar. I have to be carefull with the Oatmeal biscuits - once opened the entire pack is gone in one go - they are so addictive. I tried a comparison of the supermarket own brand and your fav - they were not even close.
I've got a recipe book that I picked up 2nd hand (no idea why I bought it as I've got the culinary skills of a dead slug) called 'The Cooking of the British Isles' that I'm happy to send to you along with some Scottish Blend teabags. If you want them just let me know and I'll (at least temporarily) join patreon and send them.

I don't know if this is a BC vs ON thing, but here in BC all five of those brands of tea are on the regular grocery shelves, albeit just the basic versions. Also, I don't know anyone who doesn't have a kettle. Of course, that could just a coincidence, but I think it may be that BC has a tighter connection to the UK for some reason? (We also have Branson Pickle, HP Sauce and Lea & Perrins just hanging out in the condiments aisle.)

Tea is certainly very important in the UK but I'm one of those strange people who prefer coffee! I have two sisters... one is in camp tea, the other camp coffee. However I don't *dislike* tea and in fact a "full breakfast" just wouldn't be the same without it. Liking your vids very much BTW... keep at it!

Yorkshire is my favourite but PG and Typhoo are good too. It's about the making of, not the bag that goes in it. Never had any of the fancier flavours.
I never ever dunk but I do like a good bourbon with a nice cuppa.

Quality dunking technique... excellent timing and no "break-away", baked goods lost to the mug bottom dreaded dregs... I'm a 3-4 pint a day dude, usually brewed in mug with a splash of milk, mostly bag based, but hey, occasionally go wild, dig out the teapot and pick a leaf to match the mood (pot brewing technique is a separate science lol - the warming of the pot, choice of pot type, with or without cozy, and preferred infuser or lack of), and was a long time digestive fundamentalist, til the Milk Chocolate Hobnob revelation. As a lapsed Geordie in Lancashire I'm staying neutral in the war of the roses (Anglo-Saxon Northumria once included much of both so... lol)... Upon tea etiquette in places other than home, if given a milky mess, add a tablespoon of sugar and smile very sweetly. 😇☕

As a Northerner abroad I tend to keep a decent supply at home, which presently consists of
    Typhoo 2 x 960 bags
    Typhoo decaf 2 x 80 bags
    Tetley 1 x 240 bags
    Tesco original 3 x 80 bags
There's two of us and @ 3 cups per day each that lot should do us for 14 months...
I need to buy more tea.

My fav tea is 100% Tetley Original.
My fav biscuit is 100% Custard Cream, and they fall apart much quicker.
My mother loves Yorkshire Tea (just like you) and she loves Rich Tea Fingers.
You should try and dunk these fingers in a hot cup of tea (2 seconds is just 2 seconds to long).

It's really quite simple as loose leaf tea & "bagged" tea don't taste the same. Bagged teas is a tea drinkers version of a coffee drinkers Instant Coffee where as a Loose Leaf tea is like a Perculator/fresh ground coffee drink. In effect it's the difference between driking Draught Real Ale and Canned Beer they're just incomparable. It's like trying to compare Ambrosia of the gods to the dregs of the slops tray. NO CONTEST.
