I've only just started walking outdoors and am planning my first ever wild camp soon. I'm a sufferer of mental illness and knowing there is a supportive community is going to help me a lot in taking these big steps. I know people say that walking helps mental health and I hope it will help me, along with a community that cares too. Great video, thank you!

It's great that you feel that way Paul, but sadly that has not been my experience. I'm a British army vet with 40+ years of outdoor experience I joined Facebook groups hoping for what you are describing in this video. What I got were groups full of self serving and opinionated Tw^t$. Belittling those on a budget or not physically able to experience the outdoors as "They" felt it should be experienced and accessed. And no, I never posted a question. I saw how the great unwashed were treated when they asked their questions and left all the groups. Love your videos and have learnt a lot. Every day's a school day, Keep Rocking.
That's quite standard across so many Facebook groups irrespective of the subject matter. You see people use the laughter emoji to belittle others on these groups so often it gets all rather depressing
Im new to the "community" aspect of it, i had horrible experiences asking questions and encountered gatekeepers. Put me off it entirely and kept myself to myself until i joined the messner group. Seems friendly in there.

We are a friendly bunch. Keep at it and go out and do it. Paul is one of a bunch of you tubers with excellent advice and helped me make the right decisions. Ignore those nasty gate keepers and go with the flow. We are alright!
Self righteous arrogance can be a problem. There is more good than bad though :-)
I think it's funny how we mostly rely on the internet now as our "community"
I used to trek and camp in the 70's,80's where there was no mobiles or internet and that was a true break from society. You would only socialise with the odd walker or someone in the pub or campsite.
Research was mainly from others books or trail magazines and shop staff.
When I go away now I don't really feel true solitude as if I have a signal my friends are there with me.
On the flip side the support and advice from people I've never met is very lifting and gives confidence.
I trekked Nepal in the 90's with no tech and today see lots of utubers doing similar routes and wonder if they do experience the true wilderness with it's smells and notice the smaller things that you can miss trying to get the best vlog done.
Sometimes deteching is the answer. It's always there when you come back..
I'm a beginner hiker and just had 3.days with no signal (except an emergency satellite phone in case.) It made it feel more special and exciting definitely, it was the western part of the Affric Kintail way.
When we started camping again after an almost 20 year break, the first thing I did was research and ask advice.
We didn't want to spend a fortune in case it wasn't for us anymore, and with the help of the camping/outdoor community, we put together a great budget camping set that works perfectly for us.
Thank you to every one of you. Here on youtube, on the forums, bloggers, etc.

Generally have only met positive people when out hiking. I'm always trying to get others out and about and share all my routes etc. it's worthwhile even if you just get a few more people out, especially to the lesser walked areas. It's not all about the national parks.
Ive recently gone camping again after sone time and cant believe how elitist it has become like any other recreation thing, the fastest bike lightest this lightest that, the most best super this super that, its farking nuts. Its the uk, you dont need a -25 sleeping bag. I give up.
Shout out to the day walking couple who stopped me for a chat on my way up Ringing Roger yesterday.
I always fly solo because I love the tranquility, but interactions like that are just as special. A common interest and a chat between strangers for no reason whatsoever - we need more of that in this world.

Instagram also has great communities for younger people too, Common Ground have been organising community hikes for a while now. Also on volunteers, national trust have a fairly large team of hidden volunteers who routinely scour the depths of the Peak District and relay crucial information to the park ranger team. They’re all kinds of people who make the great outdoors what it is today!

Watching this on 7/7/2024 and the Kickstarter for the Cone Stove has now raised well over 50,000 pounds!! Too bad I'm in the US. I'm guessing shipping would be a beast. And the Caldera Cone doesn't nest into the pot in two pieces like this one : ( Sticking with my BRS and Toaks pot for now : )
Excellent vid. Finally got to view it. All good points. Pretty much how I got started motorcycling camping. Light is right. before I was broke down with car/truck camping equipment. I still have most all of it and use it to this day some 44 years later. RTW capable, half way there. It's a fine bunch who want to get away and enjoy life before them. All good. Next time.

When i started hiking and wild camping in the peaks in 2011/12 one of the only guys on youtube in the area was Dean Read. Topman!

What is my pet peeve is the "I'm not sharing the location" folks. Who the hell are they? Gatekeepers? They're out making a video, exploiting the "secret spot" to their own benefit, and won't share the location? When that happens, I unsub and forget them. I've been at this since the 80-90s (before the internet), and fly campers who make a mess will do what they do REGARDLESS! They are not sitting watching UA-cam channels to find spots to wreck.
Sounds like the secret hot spring community in the US. For me it's when a channel is lucky enough to camp with land owners permission (that's free camping not wlld camping) and you haven't got any clue where it is or how you could do so yourself, This is coming from South East England where there's bugger all outside of campgrounds.
The reason why they don’t share the spot is they spent time and effort finding it for themselves. If you don’t mind sharing your camping locations, I don’t suppose you’ll provide a Google Maps list of your favourite locations for the community to use?

As always, 1% cause all the problems, very loudly while 99% are doing all the good stuff, just quite quietly. P.S. You've said it all. This community was sort of there before the Internet. TGO, is a good example. I got quit a bit of info from there and I belive from Chris Townsend. I also had a very small article published, don't ask me what on. And my introduction to Hilleberge😊

I've tried going camping with a friend but it's two in tents !
I was walking the coast to coast. I was halfway and decided to push myself after the Nine Standards to try to make better time. Needless to say that was a bad idea and I limped into my campsite late in a bad way. It was tipping with rain and someone on the other end of the site ran out in 500m of deluge with their first aid kit to see if they could help my feet. Yes. The community is awesome 🤩

I've small/medium/big camped, all my life, but only been rucksacking now for 3yrs since being 50+ & I'm far from at my best now, but I'm still loving it...✔️ Stripey is a Top Mountain Man💯 I don't think I know Timo, I thought that was where my last tent came from...!?!🤔 but realised that spelling was slightly different...!😄 So I will check him out too...!👍 I've been stuck home, with two busted feet for five weeks😐 & missed the best month of the year, but got a new kayak last month, before injuries & also got another cheeky tent arriving tomorrow for when I can walk again...!🙏 "To Zee Chopper...!" - In the great words of John Wayne...!😉👊🤣

All that UK greenery looks compelling to me since we are currently in a “heat dome” event in my area of Northern California with temperatures hitting 100f (37.78c). I love the camping and hiking community on UA-cam and go to about 5 outdoor channels on a daily basis and Paul’s is one of them. I go to many others on an irregular basis. Us outdoor folks are kindred spirits no matter what the country.
My goodness almost 40°C that’s not very pleasant. In the UK we have been moaning about having so much rain but the UK looks very green and lush at the moment. Most people in the Uk don’t have air conditioning so when we get high temperatures ( which normally accompanied with high humidity) it’s particularly unpleasant.

I'd gladly swap with you. It rained for the entirety of April and May where I live in England, and it's rained every day of this month so far except for yesterday.
Basically it's been grey, overcast and depressing since last September and it doesn't look like we're going to get much out of summer before we're back to autumn and winter.
It's utterly depressing, and the BBC still have the temerity to try and shove in articles hectoring and lecturing about man-made global warming. Absolutely ridiculous, I've never had the heating on in June before yet here we are, in the middle of a supposed global warming crisis.
@@daryld4457 Global warming equals unpredictable weather not necessarily a Mediterranean weather pattern for the UK.
In fact the Mediterranean is having some severe weather issues, not enough rain and this going to cause huge increases in the cost of fruit and veg in the UK. Conversely we have had so much rain that vegetables are rotting in the flooded ground and this will in turn raise the price and lead to shortages of UK grown veg.
Great video. I think what you’re saying applies to many groups of enthusiasts. I ride motorcycles and the times I’ve seen total strangers go out of there way to help others. I broke down once and a guy passing offered to to open his garage and home and let me have use of his tools to fix my bike. The surprising thing was he was going to work and wouldn’t be there. “ just lock the door when you’re done”.
I haven't ridden for a few years but yes, always saw many like myself would stop for anyone, not just other bikers, who looked to be in difficulty. I once pulled my own tank off to refuel a stranded couple who were new to motorcycling and had run dry with their tap on Prime. 🤦♀️

I'm in North Wales, there is literally nowhere and i mean NOWHERE! You can go to escape civilisation and dog walkers.
If the Moon was sovereign Welsh territory, you'd take that one giant leap for mankind and step off the ladder, only for Jan and Rob from Salford to walk past with the ratty yappy little dog whilst wearing his and hers matching waterproofs they got from Millets 🤬

Hey Paul, is that Ladybower? I have yet to delve into the world of wild camping, I do keep threatening lol, but the community does seem very supportive. I am a keen mountain biker and that community is the same, people just look out for others and its just an incredible privilege to be just a small part of that.
I always travel alone, total freedom
I love walking alone at my pace looking at what I like. I take inspiration for locations from folk such as yourself & generally have an idea of where I want to go & use os map app to plot a route. I always look up gear reviews before I spend my limited funds. Thank you for all your videos

Been hiking for years, camped all over the place, wild as well as on campsites but never a solo wild camp.

I was wondering when you did the WHW, did you pick up a trail-name and could you eleborate how you got it? Mine was 'Medic'. I tended a sprained ankle on a fellow hiker. I gave him advice to keep his feet high during the night by puttingthe backpack under his feet and taped his ankle with sports-tape the next morning (he ended up actually finishing the trail) His trail-name was 'Sherpa'. I gave some other medical advices to fellow hikers we met each day along the way. Ironically I couldn't help myself due to my knees giving up during the last big descent in the woods before we reached Tyndrum . Actually you were 4 days behind us when we were at Tyndrum.
Paul you were inspirational to me back in the dark days of covid when my morale was low.
Your videos along with a few other stalwarts kick started my wild camping adventures.

I've seen you using a katadyn befree filter paul, can you or anybody else tell me how to sanitise, clean and store between usage, and is swishing it in clean water to restore flow rate or does it need some kind of back flushing? Thanks.
Boys Brigade and going out with my dad was how I started, 50 years ago. College and Uni had mountaineering clubs so went out with lots of people then.
As I got older I tended to go by myself or with my wife. That is why I have a 1 man and a 2 man tent😂
Back then there were less peoplenout on the hills and camping though places like round the Clachaig was always packed. In the past 25 uears the outdoors have exploded with people and I always get a good chat when Im away, sometimes in the middle of nowhere.
I still have some gear I got in the mid 80s but Ive given away a lot to people starting out. I must admit to a weakness for stovee though.
The camping community can be unexpectedly funny, with their unique quirks and traditions. Watching this video made me realize just how ridiculous and entertaining camping enthusiasts can be. From elaborate setups to intense debates over the best way to start a campfire, it's all part of the fun. Despite their over-the-top antics, you can't deny the dedication and passion these individuals have for enjoying the great outdoors. It's a reminder to not take ourselves too seriously and to embrace the absurdity that comes with being a part of the camping community.

I miss the English countryside but New Zealand is beautiful
Lovely video. We all need these reminders. I have managed to get my three friends of 45 years plus on the hills with overnights on Dartmoor and some memorable trips to the Black Mountains (Still the best destination for us in the south looking for a hilly trip) based on what I have been told by others including you. I still recollect my first multi-day South Downs Way trip with a mate as a teen in the 1970s. We had an array of car camping stuff and hefty ex-army gear from cadet days. Met some really nice people on our trip and got a LOT of really good advice and help about lightening our gear, what to leave behind, different LD walks and footwear in particular. One bloke in particular who worked at Mattesons near Newhaven (no idea why i remember that details 50 years on) was an inspiration with his knowledge as we tucked into baked beans from the can while camping on a misty Chantonbury Ring. No internet and only a few books which seemed to focus on the extremes of UK weather and worst poss. scenario, so all this info. was irreplaceable wisdom passed on to us . One note about the DoE, my daughter had to carry more than I would carry as the school's gear is not the lightest. Fine for a burly 16 yr old rugby playing bloke but for a slight girl with little interest in sport, less so. Can't help feeling that a beasting walk-in then some unfettered trips with a day pack might encourage youngsters to embrace the concept of fast and light with enjoyment at the forefront rather than laboriously struggling with a heavy pack for several days. After 40 years at a desk I started walking again and the advent of the lightweight revolution has lightened my pack by about 70%. Thanks again Paul, sorry for the tome.

I’ve got a nature hike cloudpeak 2, got for about 80 quid in a sale. Great tent, has stood up to minging weather and loads of room inc to sit up. Give it a look if u haven’t I can’t reccomend enough if you’re on a budget like me haha
