You just heard the Fender Japan '66 Jazzmaster. The JM66B provides high quality craftsmanship and classic offset Fender tones that have spanned many decades and genres. The look is accomplished by a 3 tone sunburst finish that highlights the grain of an alder body. This Jazzmaster's neck is maple, surrounded by ivory binding and even displays its block inlays on the rosewood board. Fender Japan also takes the vintage route with the neck, employing 21 vintage frets and a 7.25" radius board while the back is shaped to an oval profile. The Jazzmaster sound comes from its famous two circuit layout, where the neck pickup receives an independent volume and tone that can be used as a preset. The vintage voiced, alnico Jazzmaster pickups from Fender Japan and the classic vibrato bridge setup also add to the attack and unique voicing of this classic offset guitar.
I'm not in the market for another Jazzmaster, but I still find myself returning to this demo just for the "Incinerate" part. Stellar!
Really epic
+1000 for Sonic Youth!!!
LOL, My Son purchased this very same guitar because he is a big Sonic Youth fan.
BTW, great guitar after we switched to a Mastery Bridge, SD Antiquity II pickups and a new set of Vintage style tuners. A great guitar with it's own vibe and tone, it also sounds great through a cranked Marshall.
@@hkguitar1984 what doesnt 😂
@@tw8454 So very, very true T W. LOL, at the time I made that comment I'd only owned my Marshall a month or so. I've an old 1987x I had modded and converted to vintage Plexi era specifications (new OT Tx and a PPI MV).
What I found out was that all these years I'd been chasing down the wrong Rabbit Hole in search of Tone. I think I've tried every pickup brand under the Sun. With the Marshall just about every guitar/pickup sounds great (IMHO). So all of my Fender and Gibson guitars have been switched back to the stock pickups, and I couldn't be happier.
I came here to hear Andy play guitar!!!
Does anyone know if Andy plays on some band or has original songs ?
andy has become a legend for guitarrist and pedal lovers.
I still watch this every now and then to hear Andy play "Incinerate."
This video did two things:
1. it made me want a jazzmaster (I bought one)
2. I Fell in love with incinerate and to this day it’s one of my favorite songs
Thank you Andy❤
Andy is very outside-of the-box demo player. Instead of generic blues riffi, we hear this SY tune with crazy DD#A#D#GG -tuninga
You are one of the best guitar players I've ever heard. Your knowledge of chords is fantastic and they sound great. If you gave online lessons I'd definitely be one of your students. I've been playing for many years but I'm nowhere near your expertise. Keep up the good playing, I really enjoy it.
I just bought one at a resale shop in Japan. They only wanted $650 but I asked does it have a case. The guy said "No sorry " so I asked for a discount...walked out with it for $520. It is so mint! The pick guard still had the protective film on it. New strings and boom! Beautiful music. I love it!
wow man that sounds awesome! what Color is it??, im a huge japanese jazzmaster and jaguar player, i have one of each, bought them both used for 500. My jag is from 93 so it had some beauty wear on it, but the neck is one of the nicest ive played on. My Jazzmaster is from 03. Candy apple red, my lady lol. If in the future u do a mod, get a mustang bridge, unless ur not and aggressive player and strings dont pop out on u lol, for me the original bridge was good but im aggressive lol.
Really GREAT review! Andy is very talented musician and instead of boooring bluesy stupid licks as we watching all the time, this is really inspiring
I'm definitely getting one of these. Amazing sound. Japanese quality is astonishing.
SONIC YOUTH at the begining.
+Gonzalo Cerrón Which song?
mikedfdf Jobs Thank you.
yeah that's a really hip riff
Heech Sure is.
With that first chord I was sold. Agree with Peter F, thanks for making something with beauty and not random noodling like all else
Nice to hear guitar demos playing actual tunes.
I have a 2006 japanese Jazzmaster. It's amazing. I did have to replace the bridge and some of the electronics but it plays and sounds really really nice.
This guy always plays the best stuff.
This video should have a million views just for the Incinerate cover! THANK FOR ALL THESE YEARS OF GREAT VIDEOS ANDY! (2021)
Thanks for the guitar lesson 🎸
Edit: Came back 5 months later. I only play jazzmaster now… and this sonic youth demo from Andy started it all.
Incinerate was incredible. You really know how to bring out the best in these instruments. Thanks!
That ending at 3:53 with the tremolo.....made me smile today.
God damit I thinking of buying a jazzmaster or jaguar and I'm watching quite a lot of demos. Every time they play bands that I love, I think I'm getting the right guitar :D
I just scored one of these, and I am pretty impressed with the variety of tone from jingly to crunchy. It's been really great so far through a 65 Princeton Reverb and tweed Champ. The build quality is superb as well. Just wish that I had half of Andy's licks. :)
Love the tone.
i am amazed how Sonic Youth's whole sound depended on this guitar. Nice playing, Andy.
Incinerate?!? Andy, you sure know how to tug at our tonal heartstrings!
Also made me miss Sonic Youth a bit. :/
This is my dream guitar!
Nice objective! Man don't give up just try to save enough money and find some several paying stuff! You won't regret it!
(omg after checking your youtube you seems very young lol well then you will definitly get one! Go squier in the mean while but I'm sure you will get one ;) Keep it up!)
Was able to snag one of these bad boys a few weeks ago. Very lucky and it's an amazing instrument.
you stole my soul, i went hear for the jazz master and my brain just exploded for sonic youth
WHAT A TONE!
I love my MIJ Jazzmaster, it's surf green with a matching headstock. But, when you get one, keep in mind that you'll need to change the pots and input jack, as the Japanese ones really don't do the guitar justice. New pickups and an American tremolo aren't a must, but after I added those as well, this has become my favourite axe. Cheers
You had me with the Sonic Youth intro!
Dammit man, this guy always makes me want to pick up my guitar and jam!
Been wanting a jazzmaster for a while. I recently got a Jag bass and I love the body shape, very comfortable and looks great so I think this would be a great guitar to add to my family of instruments.
Man....I mean it seems like everyone plays a Jazzmaster.....but they sound so dang good...
I dont like the original song, but i keep comming here almost every day just to listen to that Sonic Youth intro. You made me like it...
I've always wanted a black on black jazzmaster with blocks, binding, and a matching headstock, then throw humbuckers in there to have a jazzmaster/ les paul custom.
The original pickups on the US jazzmaster have a greater number of turns per coil
that's why a different tone and other resonances
So many guitars, so little time!
Thanks for the free guitar lessons, Andy! I really admire your playing.
just got this guitar, it's absolutely amazing and i love it. probably gonna do a couple of mods on it but it plays quite nice right out of the box.
Gorgeous guitar ,gorgeous tones!!
Most distinctive differences would be different pickups and the 9.5 inches fretboard radius and medium-jumbo frets of the Classic Player. And of course, different inlays-neck binding on the Japanese '66.
Fucking awesome. One of the best sounding guitars I've heard Andy play.
first song is "incinerate" by Sonic Youth.
dood! I'm pretty sure you were actually playing both Thurston an Lee's guitar parts together. IMPRESSIVE!!!
Awesome tone.
Great sound. Very nice playing too.
That sounds fantastic!
Sounds amazing
Just. Wow.
Love! love! love!!!
amazing review. thanks for sonic youth!
you're the best man, andy. I enjoyed your vids for so long!!!
Andy is a band!
Come see Bandy live in New York City!
As soon as I saw that is was a jazzmaster I was praying for sonic youth.
Damn, now I want to buy me another guitar.. Thanks Andy ;-)
Please someone name all three songs!!! I know incinerate but i gotta know the other 2 thanks!
Everyone should try out a Squier j. Mascis jazzmaster! I own one and love it! Wud be a great guitar at twice the $. Awesome!
I've been having a dilemma over whether to go for a jazz or jag. This video hasn't made it easier....... I was so close to going for a jag!
saw a video who had this in surf green with matching headstock... where the hell are they I need one
Andy uses a pick! It has been a while I believe haha. One hell of a demo! Nice one Andy
ジャズマス欲しいなー
I'm liking what I can hear from the bumper music (starting around 1:45) - also sounding SY'ish.
Gotta love Jazzmasters! Great demo too!
What song is he playing at 2:47?
i really cant stand all the hate on the Japanese Jazzmasters. Fender Japan makes great instruments, better than Mexican, Korean, Chinese. Ive owned my japanese Jazzmaster since 1994, of course i made serval upgrades but i bet these new japanese reissues are on par with there American reissues.
Literally no one hates it
Anybody know what the song is Andy plays at around 2:47? It's beautiful...
I don't know if playing MBV is the best way to demo the natural sounds of a guitar... That said I really want to see Andy play When You Sleep.
that's why alex turner loves this guitar so much :)
He have other Jazzmaster, i think its a 50s version.
A guitarist who have this guitar is Zach from The Neighbourhood
Guitar shop guy phoned in some pretty good indie rock there
*_SEE YOU AGAIN ANDY!!!!_*
MY FAVORITE SONIC YOUTH SONG!
Great as always Andy. You're one of the best on You Tube. I noticed you use a DRRi for most of your demo's. I've got one too, and was wondering which channel you usually plug into?
ROCK ON
i want one
Fender Japan also do another Jazzmaster, which I believe is basically the same except no block inlays, that comes in left handed.
MBV that is!
I seriously want this exact guitar but can't seem to find it anywhere?!?! The sunburst, best looking Jazzmaster headstock I've seen, love the block inlays, the tremolo system what I'd want (I've seen Fender making some of these cheaper, non-American made Jazzmasters with just a hard tail bridge - no trem system, what's that?!). Maybe could use a pickup upgrade here but really not necessary. And made in Japan speaks better to me than the mim versions for some reason.
Come on pgs, where is this...?
I get 1000th like for Sonic youth!
Holy shit. You sound absolutely killer on that thing. Can you give a list of songs you demoed in this video?
Some of these tortoise shell pick guards on sunburst Jazzmasters are so red they look like a close-up of a bunch of roses...and then there ones like this, so brown it's almost black. The ageI guess. Either way, they bother look badarse!
And this bound , block inlays neck is as fine a finger board as I've ever seen.
It's got a really fat tone that doesn't lose clarity, Andy's playing also really accents it very well.
incineeerate
Well, the Japanese Fenders are pretty, and this Jazzmaster sounds nice, but why did they make the neck radius on ALL the Japanese models (not just the Thinline Tele's) 7.25"? The normal 9.5" neck radius is tight enough, and hard to get decent bends w/out jumbo frets. Instead, they should've increased the radius to a comfortable 12" or left it at 9.5" and added jumbo frets. I love Fender guitars for their bright wound strings and the 25.5" scale length most have, but they need to widen the neck radius. I bought a US Strat Deluxe to get the compound-radius fretboard, (9.5-14") but I would prefer a set radius of 12". I guess the small radius is good for rhythm work, but Andy had to practically bend the string off the neck to get a full bend.
Because the original Jazzmasters (and Teles, Strats, Mustangs, etc.) from the '60s were all 7.25". This is meant to be a reissue. But I agree: 9.5" or 12" is better.
japanese hands... mind you
I honestly prefer 7.25" and 9.5" to 12.
treblinkalovescene Hey, nothing wrong with that. I wish I felt comfortable w/that radius, because I like Thinline Tele's & these new Japanese RI's are very nice. But Everyone's hands and playing styles are different. Also, the frets play a big role in bending comfort, too--I might prefer a 9.5" radius w/jumbo frets over a 12" radius w/smaller frets. I do think necks can be made too flat, and then you have nothing to "push against" to get those bends. Guitars are 1 thing I don't like to buy without 1st playing, because really the specs are just guidelines & if the guitar feels right to me, I don't care about specs--and vice versa.
What's the last song?
A jazzmaster really suits Andy.
Sonic Youth. Nice
holy shit, major props for Incinerate
Pleeeeaaaase Andy do a guitar lesson on this Incinerate intro !!!
Sonic Youth :)
Movember beard Andy! :)
It sounds AMAZING!!! Which amp is used?
The Classic Player made in Mexico is the same in your opinion?
Better than the new American version which has no tremolo or rhythm switch. I just wish it was left handed
Can you demo the American special Jazzmaster?
What's the opening song ? I can't remember .
I've been waiting for you to play sonic youth!
Ah thanks :)
yeah but i've heard that jazzmasters are designed to be set up with .12s and those don't slide around nearly as much.
yeah andy! play us some MBV!
Fender Jazzmaster didn’t become popular among jazz guitarist cause they preferred the jazz boxed fancy guitar & not a solid bodied one. I have a MIJ JM Fender and it’s great. Half priced, but heavy.
What amp was this recorded with? Sounds fantastic!! Also, the link is broken in the description
Incinerate- Sonic Youth. It's perfection.
