  • I'm in Spain on a wild goose chase to find a world famous goose farmer, Eduardo Sousa. Eduado makes ethical foie gras with his geese and his reknown for his humane farming practices. I've come half-way across the world to find him. Will I succeed?

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

    My thought process:
2:16 "Oh he's doing the thing where you film yourself leaving. I should leave a comment joking 'Oh no, you forgot your camera!' Nah, that's too corny."
2:33 "The madman, he did it himself."

Dude the number of videos I've seen where people hiking leave their cameras behind for a cinematic shot and thought "man they've gotta walk all the way back to get that camera" it was downright therapeutic to see Morgan run back for it lmao

Man, I'm spanish and the only thing that I can say about your pronunciation is that it's great! I've never heard an american speaking so well my langauage. It doesn't matter if you don't have a lot of vocabulary, I understood everything you said. And of course: Nice video. I really love people getting interested about my country. I live in the north, where we have a more cold climate, but I like the landscape of Extremadura too. Good luck with the farm, man, I hope your dream come true! :)

When i was in the 4th grade i never understood why i should learn english as a forgein language, because i had no real interest to visit England or the US. After a while i learned that English would be really usefull because many people speak English as a second language. So i started to pay attention in my english classes. Now, like 10 years later, my english is decent (well, not my spoken or written english ;) ). But the reason i learned English was the abilitly to just communicate with people from other countries. Anyway, last summer i was in Spain and i learned, that english is infact not spoken by everbody. It was a really interesting expierence, because i never really understood how hard it is to order something in a restauraunt when you on only know "Si". English is ofc still usefull, but not in the way imagined.
I dont reall know what i want to say with this story, but i really understand your struggle^^.

I always try to learn a bit of the language of any country I visit.
Even a minimal set makes communication a lot easier, as long as you get the pronunciation roughly right.

Shame I only discovered your vlogs recently. I live very close to there. Well done you for persevering, you were very brave. The locals here can be a bit suspicious of strangers motives. He probably doesn't believe that you would come all the way from USA to see how he farms his geese. Little tip for your next trip. Always ask in the bar for whoever you need to find.. they always know everyone. 😁 And yes, improve your Spanish but don't beat yourself up, they speak a dialect here called Extremeña which is very difficult to follow. Very much enjoying your videos. 😀

What a huge big adventure. I made a similar adventure to N. Scotland in 1982 about spinning wool and spinning wheels. I'll never forget my host at the Bed And Breakfast before I went on the train to Belfast. "Remember, my dear Maggie, If your shot, you'll not be drown." I just got my first 3 ducks. We have a drake and 2 hens. Tomorrow we build their first outside pen. I have raised ducks before and I loved them. Thanks so much for being such a great duck/goose lover. I didn't have good luck with my geese in the past. They were very destructive and ate the side of my barn.

@@georgegordonbrown9522 Castellano is either European Spanish, or a way to differentiate actual Spanish from the other regional languages that are also spoken in Spain. They don't have such a thing in Extremadura though, just your typical southern pronunciation. And the smaller the village, of course, the thicker the accent. I could tell you none of these are city folk from the moment they opened their mouths.
As for slang, if it can be called that, the obvious example is how they kept calling the pigs "guarros" instead of "cerdos". Small towns are full of weird, colorful words that pop out unexpectedly and would definitely confuse any foreigner no matter how good his Spanish might be.

(Of course I'm not actually stalking or intruding on people's privacy, just seeking out those infamous in their field, such as duck breeding.)
Even with the language barrier you still gained a wealth of knowledge, and to me that's the whole reason for the trek. Even better sometimes is the memory of the trek. So glad you didn't stop looking for him and all worked. Now you have that life-long connection with a duck breeder half-way around the world. Kudos.

I admire your attempts to speak another language. That being said, please learn to pronounce Eduardo's last name correctly? It is not "Suu-sah" like the marching band conductor. It is "Soh-sah" with just a hint of an "u" between the 'O" and the second "S". Your experiences with not being able to find somebody where they are supposed to be or when they are supposed to be there was a very familiar experience for me in Spain when I was there as a college student for 1 semester in 1972. Antonio's spoken Spanish was not standard textbook language, so I doubt your phone translator would have worked very well. You commented on the scenery--Extramadura, name of the region, means "extremely hard." Nearly all the conquistadors and explorers came from that area because there wasn't any future in farming there. I'm looking forward to your future adventures!

However be forewarned that the Spanish accent in Andalucia is the hardest to understand in all Spain. What is it about Southerners in many countries ;-)

About the houses in the farmland, it is illegal to build in the soil qualified as farm soil in *most* of Spain, with some exceptions. You can have buildings to store farm tools, tractors and such in there, but building an actual house is a no-no. In most places they will fine you and demolish it.

Hopefully google translate as improved. It used to be infamous for messing up a perfectly simple message between one language and another.
Glad you got to meet your mentor-to-be. 😉

Don't feel bad about your Spanish, My dad ordered 4 single coffins and a king size coffin and he needed them by tomorrow for my family when we moved to Brazil. The furniture guys were cracking up the *whole time* they were delivering our furniture :) My Dad had swapped the words colchões with caixões, which are mattress and coffin respectively.

I love the way you edit videos. Between your personality and the way you edit, it always keeps me coming back and excited for more videos! I may have no interest in ever farming, but I love watching your journey. :3
