Worked with a guy once who used to always say "the best part about standards is how many of them there are" he was talking about electrical but I think it applies here. lol
Like the tip on using the scissors to hack excess materials away. As for hook sizing, your observations and recommendations regarding shank length and hook gape are on point. And.....why the hell would you even tie,or use, a size 30 fly?????? Great tying lesson for the hares foot fly. Thanks, Cheech.
This has always been the problem since the beginning. I usually error towards the wider gape hooks vs narrow gapes. Plus a lot has to do with the type of fly- large body / skinny body. After you tie a while you get a feel for the sz hook you wanna use. I totally agree with Cheech!
Larger hook gapes are not necessarily better, as you seem to imply, Cheech. What matters is the angle of penetration and how efficient it is. Datus Proper (What the Trout Said) has the goods on this issue.
They are certainly better if you have a bunch of material that closes the gap. Angle of penetration is important... Sure, but if there is too small a gap you won't poke them well at all. Don't go EWG, but a sixe 18 3x long is the dumbest hook ever made ;}
Absolutely yes to using MM for hook sizing! If it’s good enough for my pants, it’s good enough for my flies!
As a NEW(ER) tier, I love this series!!
SO MUCH stellar information!!

Would that work on other colors? Nice ty

But what is the area under the hook gap?
Replacing the tooling to make all hooks the same size would cost millions, and likely, these companies couldn't survive off that deficit.
So hackle gauges are worthless
For the most part
Wait. Now I have to worry about mayfly farts adding to global warming?
You should've kept it as WTF what the fudge .... Only you didn't say fudge
