In the Classic scene where Del falls through the open bar hatch David Jason gets all the plaudits but Trigger’s reaction is equally brilliant. It is.
      Sullivan (the writer) does have good scripts but they can be a bit easy to read - only a supremely skilled comedic actor can wait that millisecond more, feint the glance, the look - and then deliver the line to absolute perfection.
      Lloyd Pack could. The US has Michael J Fox with this ability too.

    In America, the model for comedy writing was to have a team writing the script for a comedy, whereas the UK used to be one man/ woman.
    This is why the consistency is so high on Fools and Horses as it has John Sullivans footprint on it all the way through.
    Sadly the UK has now began to follow the US model( with a notable few exceptions).

    • @neilcole9698
      @neilcole9698 4 роки тому +1

      Not quite true about the UK having one person write the show. Most of the greatest or most popular sitcoms ever - Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army, Porridge, Steptoe and Son, The Likely Lads, Father Ted, 'Allo 'Allo, It Ain't Half Hot Mum and plenty more right through to Peep Show - were actually written by two-people teams. Granted, not the US large-team model, but solo writers like John Sullivan were even scarcer than people realise.

    • @zafmal2935
      @zafmal2935 4 роки тому +3

      @@neilcole9698 Fair enough Neil.
      I didn't realise that.
      I would still like to think that it was a fairly small group sitting in a broom cupboard somewhere at the back of Broadcasting House in White City, as opposed to to dozens of people round a large table in a wood panelled executive boardroom.

    • @geoffpoole483
      @geoffpoole483 4 роки тому +1

      @Zaf Mal Most of the successful British situation comedies were written by duos. On radio Spike Milligan wrote most of the Goon Show episodes on his own. Roy Clarke wrote Last of the Summer Wine and Open All Hours on his own, and Carla Lane wrote solo. Writing partnerships in comedy are probably more successful because comedy is so subjective. Totally agree with you about the American approach.
