      Girl the teacher is right substitution is bad acting, any good acting coach/teacher could tell you that. When you are acting you need to be in the character, not in your head thinking about your life. It makes you a weaker actor by having to depend on personal experiences to feel anything. You should be having the characters thoughts and worries not your own. This was a year ago so hopefully you've learned this by now. Substitution makes weak actors.

    Well I kinda understand the teacher in the first situation and I think that with having the long talk to figure it out she kinda helped you to become better, while the second teacher seemed to be very stubborn and set on her views. How should an actor not pull from their own experience fit a scene?! That makes no sense. And the stuff with if a woman loves a man she gives him the baby he wants even though she doesn’t want one and has other priorities?! How is that the “right” way to play it and “obvious choice”? This is a) very misogynistic and b) super unrealistic. If that was how the ending should have been she should have said so but if the scene is an open improvisation then so what does she want?! Makes no sense. And her yelling? Super unprofessional!

      How is it misogynistic? She was right that relationship would be over, considering she is willing to abort their child. People that career focused often end up alone with cats.

      Also a lot of acting coaches say that substitution shouldn't be used, because it disconnects you from truly being in the scene.

    this reminds me of an audition I did where we did an improvisation and the tension between me and my partner was so intense, while I was playing I could almost see the life my character and his had had and we were arguing and I felt like crying, so I kinda did. It seriously felt as if I was losing his love - crazily enough I didn't even know the name of that person. That's how beautiful and scary acting can be sometimes

    I'm an acting teacher, i've just graduated from the actor training & coaching MA at RCSSD. You should never be made to feel like that, you are completely correct to not agree with that teacher. Acting should be joy.

      Hi, as a person who is attending a performing arts school which is not a ba drama school, do you think it’s ever ok to shout at actors or be frustrated and lash out at actors and have the feedback to be “just act”?

    • @harrisonsamuel6464
      @harrisonsamuel6464 3 роки тому

      You say acting should be joy, should one be very very frustrated and angry because people are doing things “wrong”? Is it ever ok to say when an actor is having a mental breakdown and that person is needing a mental break to say “well this is show business” or “you are wasting my time”

    I am so glad you made this video. I had this really big thing between me and a music teacher. She reminds me of that teacher you have. I feel less alone now that I know these kind of teachers are everywhere, lolz

    Don't worry Lottie, you know what method works for you so don't listen to that teacher >:-( And I've seen you perform with your methods, and you were so natural and amazing on stage ❤️

    I absolutely understand your struggles! I had some weird teachers in my design studies last year who didn’t like my work so I had to constantly fight for myself and my opinion. About the anxious self I would recommend you the "wild journey" app which has really nice calming meditation sounds. I first thought meditation was a bit weird, but putting on these sounds makes me feel relaxed and just overall happy, maybe it helps :)

    Lottie, thank you for this video. As always, I love coming here, and just hearing about your experience in your drama school. As I told you already on instagram, I absolutely hate teachers who decide to crush their students. That's not constructive criticism at all, it's just mean, and the industry is already hard as it is. Also, like you, I absolutely do not agree with her view on women and careers - very old fashioned, and it infuriates me. But yes, we were, and still are told the same thing at Stella, that we will not agree with every teacher, and that not all of their tools work for us. The best thing, as you said, is to try their methods, and just let go if he doesn't work for you. I just myself had a struggling day at school today, and watching your video reminded me again, of yes - maybe this teacher's approach just doesn't work for me, and I'll just let it go when I graduate.
    As for the anxiety, I can't think of anything right now that'd help you, except remembering to breathe (I know, easier said then done). Looking forward to your next video. Keep going. And remember what Beckett said: "Fail. Fail again. Fail better." We're in drama school! Let's take risks and fail (I'm used to being a good student too, so sometimes it's very hard). Alright, I'll end this monologue now! Sending love! And my instagram: @itsvalentinesv

    Hey girl you seem lovely it’s soundssso intense but in a good way I wish you luck, also try meditation to relax and release tension and emotional blockages

  • @DramaLabUK

    To address tension and stress, I would advise the Meisner technique. It trains you to relax by virtue of taking your attention off yourself. Good work! Keep working.

    I’m preping for drama school auditions and I sounds weirded but I love hearing about the hardships of drama school cause most people just talk about how great it is but I want to know what to expect even on the worst days. I really appreciate your content and how human you allow your self to be for your audience :)) (Instagram: @_arie_31_)

    I studied theatre at uni, (not Drama school) and I just want to part a little university wisdom. Your teachers are there to help you grow and to support you. It can be crushing when someone tells you something that you don’t agree with, or don’t recognise within yourself, but that the fact that you feel that way means you care. The fact that you care will drive you forward. You won’t always agree with your teachers, but you can learn from it. I will say that teacher does sound a little stuck in their ways. Acting comes in different ways. i was taught Stanislavsky’s Method Acting while at college. If you continue to disagree with this particular teacher about her methods it might be an idea to talk to another senior member of staff about method acting and your tutors ability to ignore this particular method. Though it could be that your teacher doesn’t want you looking into Stanislavsky yet and is concentrating on different methods this semester. If anything try to take as much constructive criticism as you can and try not to take it personally. This comment comes from a place of love, and I know you will be in the West End as soon as you finish your course, maybe even before you graduate x
