I'm a fine artist, and I agree with you. The human eye notices symmetry instantly, even from an oblique viewpoint. The human eye is highly refined at judging distances, from any viewpoint - it evolved that way as a matter of survival back when we were hunter/gatherers living in caves. So when looking from one side of the room, and there appears to be more distance on the far side of the sink, the human eye and its relationship with the brain know about this illusion of perspective...we don't even need to think about it, we can see instantly whether something is actually centered or not. If the snarky lady were correct, we'd all be running into things, falling down stairs, and misjudging where we put our arms and hands. Her assertion is 100% wrong. And since people don't enjoy being wrong, she probably wouldn't want to see her mistake and learn something, lol. LOVE your examples of symmetry from all over the world!!!!
Thanks for the validation! I'm glad to hear a perspective from fine arts - much appreciated!
At 3:16 - 🤣
But, that aside, that is one of the best explanations of symmetry that I've ever heard. I'm thinking you're right. Thank you for taking the time to choose such a great selection of photographs that illustrate the point so very clearly. 👍 -Cara
That's great to hear, Cara! I really wanted to dig into the topic and the underlying value of symmetry. I'm really glad you found it useful!
Yes, it was great. I am not a designer, and I have not yet spent very much time trying to educate myself on design principles. What I have encountered, until your video, did not make clear that the point of symmetry is to direct focus. In my opinion, that's what you absolutely nailed. Thanks again!
I've watched other design videos over the last several years and most of those designers talked about symmetry. I tried it in my home and found it comfortable to the eye, but I didn't really know why. I've not heard it explained like this. Thank you for the explanation and visual aids. I'll be sharing this video on Facebook as it was helpful and entertaining - great snark value. And I've been watching and re-watching all your videos. Much appreciated.
Thanks for your comment, Linda! I'm glad the video was helpful to you.
