Today I'm exploiting the ESI-32 rack sampler for lofi/crunchy/funky sound in multi-timbral mode. Drums were sampled at mono 22K then downsampled to 12K bandwidth, everything else down to 8K. All you're hearing is the ESI-32 sampler including built-in chorus, and internal LFO applied to autopan/vibrato. The audio was recorded direct to Tascam DR-05, no additional effects or mastering.
ESI-32: bit of an underdog, in that early 90s era when samplers started to overcome their limitations of memory, bandwidth, storage media, and processing capabilities. At a fraction of the current selling price for other vintage samplers of the late 80s that preceded it.

Be sure you put the doormat back when you're done. Loved the tune, btw.
Was lucky enough to pick one of these up by chance over an Akai S2000 back in 2015 as my first "real" hardware sampler and I've never needed another sampler since; I've upgraded it over the years with the newer operating system chips and replaced the floppy drive with a SCSI2SD. I doubt I'll ever be letting go of it no matter how "obsolete" it technically may be.
The EMU ESI range give anything you sample a nice something that I've not found elsewhere. I've got fully upgraded and modified ESI32 and 4000. Love them. They share a SCSI2SD drive which really does help.
I just got an ESI 32 recently and installed a ZuluSCSI today. Haven't quite figured out the sampling workflow, but it's motivating to hear good music made with this instrument!
@@disparity-bit I’ve been tempted by Zulu I’ll prob wait as long as my zip runs. The workflow becomes faster and second nature with frequent use. Be sure to learn the numeric function buttons as you go.
More Please! Review/Tutorial
Nice muzak! Are you playing a multisampled elec piano or is it sampled phrases?
Both
This is not only very pleasant music...but a genius setup
Very nice! Has an early 2000's video-game vibe.
Blissful indeed! :-) Except that it made me think that my microwave was going off! lol
Thanks for the nice review! Awesome sound! Have a great day!
I managed to get a free ESI2000 a few years ago, I've got 128MB RAM coming and also the turbo board. Having an S1000 and S760, I didn't expect to really like it, but I absolutely love it! It very much has it's own sound and the filters are utterly gorgeous on it! Always love your demos, I didn't notice this one before for some reason!
How did you down sample on the ESI32?
@@amg82 sample at 22k then use Convert Sample Rate in Digital Tools menu
Thanks...love the demo!
Nice!!
I wish if I've heard this in a chill out room during late 90s. Gorgeous little piece.
Thanks!
Man, that sounds fantastic. Love the tune.
Makes me want to dust off my E5000 Ultra and E4X. Thanks!
Bet it’s still gathering dust
@@saren6538 The E4X is. I haven't been able to get it to boot.
@@tshou520i suggest looking at the power supply inside the unit, depending on whether you have an rfx32 card or hdd in there they’re prone to shorting out after some time
@@espasphalt Good idea. I'll take a look. Thanks.
sounds STELLAR
Is there a file size limit on the floppy emulators or can it be unlimited?
The sampler sees each image file the same as if it were a floppy. So the image file has the same size limitation of the floppy, something like 1Meg. But you can have however many floppy images as your USB stick can hold.
I had an ESI32 in the 90s. Always had a great bottom end and filter.
Does the gotek USB thing work at floppy speed or SCSI speed?
Yah floppy speed. My other studio racked unit has SCSI + zip 100 external drive much faster.
I have an ESI32 and an ESI4000. I have a Gotek in the 32 for loading in old sample library images. In the 4000 I have a SCSI2SD. This operates at SCSI speeds, emulates multiple SCSI drives on one SD card. Then both ESIs are connected via a SCSI cable, allowing both modules to share the SCSI2SD emulated hard drives. By having them connected together, I think I lose one possible emulated SCSI drive but well worth the sacrifice.
I have done a few basic upgrades to both my ESI - max out RAM, Turbo card, OLED screens (huge improvement), the aforementioned SCSI2SD and Gotek, and rack ears. I was going to look at replacing the big endless rotary knob with one that incorporates a push button and solder it into the enter button... haven't gotten around to investigating how feasible that is yet.
Very lovely indeed!
Yes, that tune is all right!
