- Rahal Letterman Racing driver Buddy Rice started from the pole and led a field-high 91 laps to win a rain-shortened “500.”
After rain delayed the start of the race by two hours, Rice led the 33-car field to the green flag. He led the first 12 laps, but fell to 16th after stalling the car during a pit stop after the race was red-flagged because of rain.
Timing aided Rice in securing the victory when he exchanged the lead with Adrian Fernandez, who ducked into the pits late in the race. Rice had pitted four laps earlier. Rice then pulled to a 1.4237-second lead over Tony Kanaan when moisture was spotted in Turn 1. A downpour soon followed, and the final six laps were run under yellow. Finally, with light rain falling, Rice took the checkered flag on Lap 180, 20 laps short of a complete race.
Realizing I miss there being a blimp hovering above the track. I miss the releasing of the balloons after back home again. I think we can bring that tradition back now honestly….it must have been a fan in the stands this year, ‘24, right as back home again was ending someone let like 2 balloons go, it was very funny lol
The main thing I remember about this race was the weather! I was listening to the weather radio on my scanner from time to time and heard that a severe storm with baseball size hail was moving towards the speedway. Sitting in turn 3 with no cover, I decided to get out of the grandstands then. Didn't want to be fighting that crowd trying to get to cover during a hail storm. That particular storm missed, but we were walking through ankle deep water in places after the race with tornado sirens blaring. Saw a car upside down on the Interstate from the tornado.

Buddy Rice is forever the 2004 Indy 500, but everybody had balls and drove like badasses that day!
Tomas Sheckter (to me) was driver of the day in this race!
3:08:40 Tomas Scheckter overtaking 6 cars in a matter of seconds and going with the outside line at Turn 3... One of the best moves I have ever seen

Ahh yes, the RUN FOR YOUR LIVES,, THERE ARE TORNADOES RACE.. lol. I will never forget Tom Carnegie's voice telling me to seek shelter.
this year had the best opening scenes. I hope they show it at the track on race day this year
Great ending music as well. Though best opening scenes? Would say any Delta Force intro was better than this even though this was good
