Personally with #1, kind of a nitpick but I think it might've been fun if he actually showed us one of his supposedly bad drawings and maybe say a bit about what's wrong with it for those who can't see the errors.
But I get his point, and otherwise a great video!

I'm working towards being an illustrator and my biggest problem is that I always rush myself. I know art takes time but whenever I work on something I always rush through it because I see all these great artists draw a great painting in under 2 hours or so, which would take me at least 10 hours to finish. There's always this voice in my head that tells me I won't have the luxury to spend 20 hours on a piece when I have several projects waiting to be done, so I try to work faster, which obviously results in spending less time on details, shading, composition etc... and that's really frustrating. Also I'm going on 35 now and after working lousy jobs for over 10 years, I finally want to switch my career and go for my first love of art and drawing. I know it takes time to start a new career and to make good art, but I'm constantly feeling like time is running out for me and I'll be stuck with a miserable job for the rest of my life. That's my confession.

Sometimes doing too much can lead to a block. You have done a lot this year, traveling, planning, picking up and going...artists need the down time for creativity. Stress can kill it. I know this because I am a single mom and I never have time for myself. I do everything. Artists need that quiet time to reflect and to create. We do need solitude to concept and to let the ideas come to us...

It is just so beautiful to see an amazing artist as Bobby showing the human side that he and everybody else have...
Made me admire him even more. To be a great artist, mean we have to be great people first, and this guy is really a great, mature and admirable person, and his art just shows that. Good job!

I post pretty much all my work/sketches online. And I think it's shame that more people don't do it. Why? Because it's actually really boring to look just those finished paintings and personally I would love to see ideas/progress and artistic evolution.

Sorry to say but even if you don't like your art... We DO!! And some of my favorite ones are still your stream plant/mush creatures.
Maybe you already do that: if you feel something is missing in your art, you might want to try to identify it and search for it in other sources to inspire yourself in that direction; or try to see types of art you usually don't /or cultural activities you've never been, to breathe from a different source. I hope you like your art back very soon!
Thank you again for your inspiring videos!

thanks man I went through these fears but I got past it and I got used to the fears of weather your art is good not and I had to get out of that dumb mind frame cause it dosent matter if your art looks cringy or bad and you don't like how it turned out, made a mistake on it cause you got to learn how to laugh at your artwork and not take it seriously cause this is a very creative platform where the possibilitys are limitless so have a chuckle and laugh at your own art of it looks bad, dosent look right, did something wrong here just relax and enjoy art it is an expression there is no perfect or bad there is only improvement to get better at because who knows that "mistake or error" might have made it better ;) but that's just me I'm not anywhere near you Bobby chiu no where near professional but who cares I'm having fun and that's all that matters :D

I like Schoolism, but I wish it would be available on an iPad so that I can watch the lessons and exercise at the same time. It's been a while since I listened to a lesson. As far as the video, I think feeling like a fraud is common to most artists. I also realized I was comparing myself to artworks by masters who did them in their late years. When I walked in a fair and saw where my peers were standing, I realized I was OK. When the "blue days" hit and I feel absolutely worthless, I put on a smile and "fake it until I make it". By the way, your talk at Sheridan inspired me to do my own thing. So, thanks.

  • @Silbusia
    @Silbusia 7 років тому +1

I do post my worst art too :D Because I hardly ever think my art is good enough to show it to anyone so if I didn't post my very bad pieces I would gradually stop posting for good :'D
I know I have a lot to learn but for me this fear I'm not good enough and that I'm not improving is the worst, it used to even block me from drawing. Now I deal with it by showing all, better and worse pieces, and laughing at mistakes I make and trying to stay humble when I get any critique and advice from other artists.
Your videos are great inspiration, even when I don't see your new video the moment you upload it here, I can be sure I won't miss anything because there's always someone in my digital art group on facebook that would post it as soon as they see it :)

  • @kairinaminemix

basically my confessions in one video lol. My art group always compliments me how good I am, but they don't see what's behind the scenes. It took probably 100 crappy small drawings to make 1 good drawing :P

I can totally relate to a lot of those. It's hard sometimes to remind myself that it's ok that there are artists that are better than me. I have to remind myself that I am in a different phase of life and if I keep working hard I'll get better.

  • @Harbinger_ua

Hi, Bobby. Great video as always. Also it's extremely rare to hear an artist of your calibre to share their fears and concerns therefore it's even more valuable. Also I wanted to ask: how do you overcome this imposter issue you mentioned. I finally got hired by a gamedev studio after years of struggling to break into the industry but I feel I'm still terrible and everything I do is terrible and I will get fired because I'm terrible. And now I'm kinda scared to apply to a bigger studio because I feel I'm not worthy of the spot.

I think it's a good idea to share and talk about, it can really help getting out of those feelings.. If I may ask, is that why you almost don't post any new art anymore?

I'm glad to see that even talented, successful artists feel the same way I do. Yes, it does mean those thoughts won't go away, but it also means that I don't feel this way because I am terrible, I feel this way because I am an artist.

Great as always. Now, some personal opinion: You, I think, are actually making a nice living off your passion for art. That alone I consider it a privilege few ever attain. If that is not a mark of success then I don't know what is. However, I do agree with most of your points. Some days you wake up like batting a thousand and others you feel all you do sucks and question your life decisions. Being aware of so many great talents out there is both a blessing (so much inspiration!) and a curse (so much talent a million times better than I'll ever be). But that won't ever change - it's what makes us human. Nothing to do but "keep calm and carry on"...

A good one, Bobby. This is a 2 cents from a guy twice your age: insecurity is like flooring a gas pedal: having none will get you nowhere as you'd think life is good which led to another thinking that you've 'got' it so you'd stop progressing in life, and hitting it too much will took it out of control and you'd crash and burn. Applies to everything in life not just about being an artist.
So have a healthy dose of it, traverse the traffic of life with full mind and have no regret. Peace bro.

Always try to keep in mind your audience. If you're drawing something unfamiliar to your audience but that you really like, the chances are far more likely it'll get ignored by your followers. It certainly doesn't mean you can't admire your own work! :) Popularity doesn't always equate to quality. While at first disheartening, no reason to worry about it. :)

First off, he never said he hated his job. He is totally humble about how great his life is, but you don't know his full story. He's talking about the behind the scenes of his life. So quit jumping to conclusions and be 'that kind of person' at a party
