- It has officially been a year since the release of AEW Fight Forever and in those last 365 days the game has completely died. In fact the game died fairly quickly after its release and despite numerous attempts to do so, were never able to recover. And as of June 2024 the daily player count stays stagnant. So how did this happen? How did a game that was hyped and teased as much as AEW Fight Forever be such a failure of a delivered product, and how did a game that people thought would save the wrestling games genre end up as such as a disaster. Today, we discuss it all. From the initial announcement of the game, the build up to release, release day it itself and all its updates and everything leading up to the full game we have now, for the ultimate AEW fight forever retrospective.

The amount of people who didn't trash AEW for their DLC practices was way too low.
This !!! They locked active wrestlers, old game modes, caw parts and even music tracks behind a paywall. Their “live service” meant charging for content that should’ve been in the game from day one.
Because nobody cared enough to buy it lol
Why would anyone trash it? Nobody bought the game, still played it and/or didn't care about DLC in the first place. Bad DLC practices only matter for games that matter, cause you want the DLC.
Early on when it was actually relevant they were probably worried about horses of AEW stans bothering them (now that the game and AEW are dead not so much)

Fact is, you could just download the entire AEW roster as CAWs on WWE 2K and have better looking models and then you have more match types.

Plus the game already has most of the entrances of AEW talent in the game plus Punk is in 2k24
Fight Forever has better gameplay. You can't download that on community creations.

I think one big problem the game has is that they wanted to make a wrestling game and went “but what if we put Mario party mini games in it” taking up resources and man power to make something that feels like bloat in the game and that no one wants to play. Yeah instead of giving us more characters let’s put more useless mini games in! Yeah as some one who bought day one I was so disappointed.
Nah they used handdrawn models instead of mocap also didnt focus on single player instead focused more on online with the stadium stampede but couldnt release it on time. They should have just contacted the moral kombat devs and make a proper brutal wrestling game
they also had Kenny Omega, a man who has only played video games and has never done any actual work on one, leading the project

what killed the game for me was the entrance videos, yes they wanted to make it feel like wwf no mercy, but the reason they had short entrances is due to memory limitation.AEW had no excuse

yeah I understood but disliked that about No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 and WCW/NWO revenge had the full entrances...when people have nostalgic fondness for all the aspect of No Mercy...the short entrances are bottom of the list

Nah they had the audience. The game was just mediocre and bland. It has the bones of a good game but the muscle and organs are missing.

I was one of the people who bought the “Elite Edition” when it got announced and thought all future DLC would be free but for whatever reason it wasn’t. Just wanted to us to spend more money than we already did for buying the most expensive option
It wasn't free because they made a loss on the game and needed to charge DLC is to break even.
Yes. Say what you want about WWE 2K but at least with their DLC, you get your money's worth and once you get a season pass, you get their DLC for free.

Season Pass usually means you do get all the extra content. What does the Season Pass do if you buy it and still have to pay for the content?
Aside from its story mode basically just being Kenny's otaku Yakuza wet dream, with almost zero actual correct characterization of what the wrestlers themselves are really like, the actual gameplay has the quality of a bad N64 title. Its a demake.
Literally the only reason anyone would defend it is for one reason, and one reason only, brand loyalty.
And that is a terrible defence for a product being bad.
I always found it funny how AEW fans were happy Yukes were making fight forever because they made no mercy. But somehow they forgot that they also made all the wwe games that they hated.

But the good Games that they made outweigs the bad games by a Lot. For the WWE Games I played from Yukes I played hundreds of hours, because there was a lot to do.

They really released the game 1.5 years too late , had they released it when Wwe 2k20 DISASTERCLASS was still veey fresh , they would have had more Audience but the positive success of Wwe 2k22 onwards really made Market less for them , and they Bombed thd game features also ngl

The irony is that Fight Forever is a microcosm of AEW as a whole. It has good “match types” and “exhibitions” but not a lot of content and nothing is really fleshed out. Then during the matches, they’re poorly executed because of bugs (botches) and the graphics aren’t that good (the physiques of the wrestlers). Then the only “story” you really have had to do with the Elite and it sucks because it’s the same shit for five years and was bad in the beginning it was just new at the time. And much like the game itself, AEW has never been bigger than the first day it showed up.

I saw this game free on the ps+ store, played half a match where I was pento el zero miedo vs Jon moxley, and deleted the game. It’s absolute garbage. Sorry AEW but your game sucks a$$

@@demonhead1610 yea I wouldn’t even bother it’s terrible. The controls are wonky AF and the button mashing for pins is atrocious. Wwe has mastered the pin mechanic for years now so I have no clue why tf fight forever uses button mashing. The graphics are very poor and look like an arcade game you’d spend 8 tokens on to play. Also they have no franchise mode for some reason and the create your character mode looks boring af. Overall it’s not worth your time. Just play wwe if you wanna play a wrestling game

Just play WWE2k games and add in AEW, AAA, CMLL, NJPW, TNA, and whoever and whatever else content via content creation downloads. Best way to play a AEW game!
I knew when I was playing 2K23 and had no AEW fight forever that I probably wouldn't play much of this game, and only 20 hours later I have stopped and kept playing 2K. The game just got added to June's PS plus catalog and heard from a bunch of friends that don't play wrestling games that they think this game sucks.
It does, mainly because I couldn’t even get into a online match and I tried every mode 😂
So much promise, they should have just imported the CAW suite base from No Mercy. When they talked about the blocks I thought career mode would be like no mercy where you had over 100 archs depending on W/L.
All Kenny had to do was tell Yuke's and Geta to make No Mercy/HCTP with AEW wrestlers. Instead, we got a half-assed game with unnecessary mini games. If I wanted to play mini games, I'd boot up Mario Party.

2k22 wasn't just good it was great. The wrestling video game space is mimicking IRL. This game got the attention it did because WWE games sucked, but now that they're good again, AEW is an after thought.

It was during AEW's honey moon phase when everybody would excuse anything they did. People would excuse their ps2 graphics by saying it was an art style and some would even say they were very realistic.

2. A longer, more interactive Story mode
3. More creations
4. Better online play and features
5. More match types if need be

I knew from the beginning this game was gonna bomb... people thought no mercy sounded fun on paper until people realized the days of that style of gameplay is long over...2k now has the perfect blend of arcade and sim.
It isn't really No Mercy gameplay anyway. It is Yukes' gameplay, and arguably not even one of the better incarnations of that, which has been further altered into some weird AEW interpretation.
AEW Fight Forever is not No Mercy gameplay. It's a cheap imitation of it.
FF lacks basic modes and features. The gameplay was never a core problem.
The gameplay was fun though atleast in single player. The story mode was atrocious with no branching narratives like those old wwe games had and zero backstage stories too.

Yeah, after I unlocked all the characters the game just was boring. Also to level up your creations you have to play Road to the Elite. Which sucked as it's not that fun after 3 or 4 runs.
I did had faith in this game in the beginning but when half the roster is not in the game and it pretty much felt it was a rush job and i find it funny in the Playstation store the game has a 2.3 star rating.

If you like wooden puppets fighting you get fight forever.
Wwe 2k20 kept servers open until wwe2k22 came out and over time ironed all those glitches.
It’s better to just get 2K24 if you didn’t get 2K22 or 23. Not only are there some great creations, there’s also stages, arenas, logos, etc. Plus, the game brought back the ramp camera from the earlier SmackDown games.

Yeah they should have let the player decide how long the timer was before the explosion happens, instead of just having it locked to sixty seconds
I pirated this game to try it before purchase and i feel sorry that i shortened my SSD R\W capacity because of it. So i still feel ripped off.
What really killed online for me is the people quitting all the time cause they didnt want to lose.

Worst preorder of my life. I got 38 hrs into it. I love Owen hart and couldn’t stomach enough matches to unlock him. And the dlc prices were predatory as eff. Tony Kahn owes me $80

I downloaded this for free off the PSN just so I could stomp the excrement out of Jungle Boy and the Elite as CM Punk (yes he's still in the game as is Jade and Cody lmao) and deleted it within 2 hours Game sucked but at least it's faithful to Amateur Excrement Wrestling as a company in real life.
It's now free from the PS Store as one of the free monthly games

The minute with subtitles popping on the screen was annoying, but the video was pretty solid. I'm pretty sure you can pick up a copy of this atrocity for $5 at Walmart now, if not, Gamestop.

I told people it was going to be rubbish but they wouldn't listen. Bare bones game and then the audacity to have 4 season passes with barely any extra content is crazy. I had no idea it was free on plus this month as I no longer have plus but I doubt I'd ever play it.
It’s seriously been a very long year for this game. Seems like it came out and died 5 years ago.
The biggest problem is they have too many gamers that were in Tony's ear and talked him into making a game before their brand was established enough to license out to a game company that'd pay for it all.

I think 2k24 is way better than fight forever for 5 main reasons
1, the gameplay is a lot more smoother and easier than aew
2, the graphics are more realistic on 2k than aew
3, If u wanna play as aew wrestlers u can download them on community creations
4, wwe has better modes than aew and they don’t charge u to buy one wrestler and instead includes a dlc pack and if u buy the season pass u get it for free unlike aew in which they charge u almost 20 dollars each pack to buy
5, yes 2k20 was horrible , but aew fight forever is very close to being horrible . Yes Aew has good match types but yet aew fans love fight forever but everyone else knows the truth . The game has potential but for now it doesn’t

I say this without any hyperbole: This is one of of, if not the worst video game(s) of all time. The game fights you the entire time you are trying to play it with some of the worst controls I've ever seen, looks ugly as sin, lacks any soul and seems to exist just to sell DLC. I mean FFS you know you've fucked up when they give away the game as a freebie with your PS5 sub, A YEAR AFTER ITS RELEASE. When I took it to gamestop to get it the hell out of my house, I was legit surprised they offered me money for it, instead of asking for money to take it off my hands.
For all the criticism GameStop gets, it sure seems like they did you a favor. I was also pleasantly surprised at the trade-in I got, I half expected them to tell me "we don't want this s**t."

I think I played it for about 10 hours - I bought the most expensive edition, wanted the Hardyz etc. Uninstalled it after 10 hours and not touched it since. Was really excited for it.
The fact that the video game is more entertaining than the actual AEW shows really says something.

They wanted this game to bascially be just their 1 game they came out with that they would update but haven’t actually truly fulfilled that. A lot of characters missing from the game, outdated gimmicks and no gimmick updates, poor creation suite, they could add more to Road to Elite, way too much focus on random mini-games like if you really wanted mini games go all the way and make it fun.
I only just for the game because it was free which is bascially the only way I would recommend buying it. Gameplay is ok I never played No Mercy too young for that so the way the game play is seems very clunky to me but that’s just me and how I grew up with a different style of wrestling game with the SVR games. Creation suite is dog shit like I’ve seen mobile games with better creation suites, I grew up with better creation suites. It only beats current Madden’s creation suite which is the bare minimum and under delivers for a wrestling game, they live and die off of their creation suites.
Game could have been peak but the development hell it was going through should have already given us the shine something bad is coming with them being over ambitious with the product they wanted to give us and since it took so long they said fuck it and gave us a half finished product

The Fact that AEW fight forever Made WWE2k20 looked a little cooler by comparison I mean 2k20 had tons of glitches heck they even had the Seasonal Pass that looked cool For my opinion for AEW I wish they could have done
1. They could've made entrances longer and more exciting
2. More backstage areas like brawls outside the ring like in the crowds or hell even go everywhere
3. More Arenas
4. Longer and better road to elite storylines that made sense
5. Updates wrestlers
6. Have a better pin Meter instead of just pressing buttons hoping and the chances of kicking out
7. A better stadium stampede

Game really lacks content that you'll get easily bored by the game in under a day or two. It didn't help that they put some of their high profile wrestlers in a freaking paywall, like holy hell! Imagine wwe putting guys like drew, sami, seth as dlc in a wwe2k game. Also what's with the dumbass minigames that has nothing to do with wrestling? They could have use that time and resources adding match variety instead.

The irony of a company whose wrestlers’ move sets are largely inspired by the create a wrestler feature in wrestling games, having a terrible create a wrestler mode shouldn’t be understated.
AEW would be better off investing in Fire Pro and making sure AEW talent shows up on the next ones.

Really all they had to do was make a free multiplayer wrestling game.. make a battle pass, skins, make fun multiplayer modes like live 8 man tournament, tag tournaments, throw in some rankings. This woulf of saved them money by not creating a full tradition wwe style game.
I’ve been playing universe mode with my myplayer, and if I’m being honest I’m still not bored of it😭❤️💯. Since they added more things since release , like the little things example Samantha as a ring announcer. Dawg when she says my character name *chef kiss* azreal “the anarchist” black😈🔥. Can’t forget about community creations either. Wwe definitely did their job on 2k24. Now aew imma be honest I played the game for a cool month then deleted it so I can free up storage 💀
As someone who has been involved in game development, AEW Fight Forever feels very half-baked, and I have a hunch things fell through, cause let's be real, building a game engine from the ground up costs a lot more than use an existing engine like Unreal to create your dream game ideas. Another reason why this game failed, I think the hype machine may have also backfired in this aspect. WWE 2K was in a slump, and the thought of an AEW game hitting it out of the park, that was the perfect situation for any AEW hardliner fan. They get an enjoyable game, but more importantly, they get to flip WWE a massive middle finger, which honestly is the only thing these hardliner fans care about these days. The game's lackluster presentation, combined with the resurgence of WWE 2K with its 2023 iteration, talk about a massive hit to the egos of these hardliners.
In summary, what I think contributed to the failure of Fight Forever is the undercooked state of the game, combined with overhyped expectations from its audience. Honestly, I personally believe the game should be given another year to polish up the game engine first, and with the benefit of hindsight, seeing WWE 2K 2023 work so well could have allowed them to take notes and further touch up on their own game project. Although even so, these AEW hardliner fans are most certainly the hardest people to please, so the game project was probably doomed from the start.
