  • Switching hinges on a door to swing the other direction and switch the door latch on a door. Change a door swing for no cost. Use a left hand door swing for a right door swing or right hand swing door for a left hand door swing in less than an hour.

    You can't put the drill bit behind the screw because it could be to small and if you drill a pilot hole to small you risk cracking your wood.

      You must have missed the fact you put the drill bit in front of the screw and can only see the screw threads and put it behind the screw and not be able to see the drill bit.

    Can you explain a bit more? It sounds like when you changed the hinge side, you also flipped the door (vertically, where the top is now the bottom), which necessitated flipping the doorknob. Is that right? Did your door jam happen to be centered in the frame? Mine is not. I'm dealing with a door that opens inward to the left.. and I want to make it open outward to the left.

      No, the door is not upside down

    • @watchere
      @watchere 5 років тому

      In your case the door would be flipped upside down, i think in this videos case he is going from an inward swing probaby to an outward swing. I am actually in the same boat as you, The holes drilled for the door hardware are not centered. So I could make the top the bottom but the handle would look super weird being very high up.

    What about the 3 degree bevel on the latch side.. won’t that interfere with the door closing?

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  3 роки тому +3

      Not all doors have the 3 degree bevel and the one I switched didn't have any bevel. Thanks for your comments.

    I have a french door lh outswing, we live in SWFL that's code.
    I need to just replace the doors due to warping.
    I recently found a lh inswing french door, just slabs.
    How would you convert this to work?
    Have you done a video or can suggest one for me?
    Thank you

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  2 роки тому

      I have not done a video of that, but if I’m not mistaken if you found a LH in swing you should be able to flip it to the outside and make it a LH out swing. There may be some minor adjustments, but I think that should work. Since they’re slabs you’ll need to put a small shim under the door and install the hinge to the door frame and then mark where the hinges contact the new door slab and then either use a door hinge guide and router the new slab locations to accept the hinge. If you don’t have the hinge guide it can be done with a wood chisel and hammer(just take your time and don’t try to hurry)good luck hope this helps.

    It is shame that someone doesn't invent a hinge that can go into the old location and exit out such that the door now swings out instead of say in. It would have to clear the jamb center piece and wrap back around towards the jamb. Hard to describe.

      They actually do have doors that swing either way. Consider the glass doors on a business that can swing in or out, the issue with that is there is no positive stop and unless the door latch is locked there would be no privacy and they aren’t as good to stop noise and climate control. Another issue is that if a door can swing either direction and someone is walking in a hallway a door could be opened right into them. I think that is a big factor on doors only swinging one direction.

      @@davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu That isn't what I was getting at. I do know those exist but I cannot do that for my master bathroom door, laundry room door, and my den doors (2)

      @@mradaChris the only other suggestion is to remove the trim molding and use a reciprocating saw and cut the nails behind the door jam and completely remove the entire door and jam and turn it around and reinstall it so it swings the other direction ( out instead of in) or (In instead of out) of course this won’t change a left swing to a right swing or right swing to a left swing.

      @@mradaChris if you’re handy at all and you’re careful to use a wonder bar to slowly remove the door trim molding and then you saw the nails close to the door frame and close the door and pull the frame and door out together, then remove the shims and either use vise grips to remove the nails that you cut off or just hammer them in and then flip the jam and reinstall the door and jam. You should be able to reuse the shims to level the jam and re-nail in the jam through the shims you just replaced and then reinstall the door trim molding. There really shouldn’t be a big mess.

    That is the same in swing as the hinges are on the same side of the frame. This is not how you change the in swing of a door.

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  3 місяці тому

      I am showing how to change a right to left swing. You’re correct saying the hinges are on the same side. This was a right hand out swing and is now a left hand in swing.

    The hinge looks too wide for the door thickness. I'm pretty sure the knuckle of the hinge should be in line with the edge of the door so it sits flush with the door frame.

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  5 років тому

      I use to think that too. Go look at a hinge on one of your doors and you'll see that the knuckle isn't right up against the door.

      @@davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu I'm from Ireland so these hinges are not common. Maybe in older buildings. I'm sure this aids the door to swing without hitting the architrave.

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  6 років тому

      Thanks for the question, but I was showing how to switch a door swing on a door. If you are needing to use an existing door jam, I would just cut the new hinge spots on the other side of the jam. then either putty the old spots or plug with pieces of wood and calk the perimeter of the plugs.

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu

      This was to show how to use a door that had the wrong swing in an existing door jam

    • @doanehoag870
      @doanehoag870 3 роки тому +1

      Just a warning.. most doors have a 2-3 degree bevel on the latch side so that as the door closes the gap on that side stays very narrow. If you reverse the door in the existing frame the door will probably hang up on the latch side because the bevel is now the wrong direction. You usually can’t plane the bevel off because that changes the backset of the knob/lock. The only other option is to plane the hinge side down and re- mortise them. And you will have a very large gap on that latch side.

  • @doanehoag870
    @doanehoag870 3 роки тому

    You ignored the 3degree bevel on the latch side that will now be facing the wrong way as the door closes.

    Unfortunately, it's not a left swing to the right swing. It's an in swing to an out swing... this video is a fail...

    • @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu
      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu  6 місяців тому

      Actually if you stand with your back to the hinge jam and the door swings to the left it’s a left hand swing and if it swings to the right it’s a right hand swing.

      @Bills_Bicycle_Rides 6 місяців тому

      @davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu iIt's not that, it's a change from in/out, not left/right... think about it.

      @@Bills_Bicycle_Rides I’m not saying it couldn’t be in to out or out to in, but it is changing the door swing from one direction to the other direction. That’s actually how you purchase a door that is prehung either a right hand or left hand swing. It doesn’t matter if it swings in or out, that depends on which direction it is installed.
