    My fan made post credit scene:
    Meanwhile, at Koopa’s castle, the camera moves slowly towards the lava Koopa fell into. After a few seconds, Koopa’s hand slowly emerges from the lava. The screen cuts to black.

    Signing those 2 as the directors and writers was so wrong. Bob Hoskins said they were a nightmare to deal with and most of the crew agreed. Great video Luke, I’m looking forward to the future of this channel!

      The worst part was how the male director threw hot coffee on one of the extras to make him look "dirter" go watch the video game historians video on this movie if you havent. Some of the stories he goes into is WILD man. I felt sorry for Bob Hoskins. He was such a fantastic actor, and he really felt like he wasted his time on the movie. Which he didnt imho.. but it wasnt no Roger Rabbit, of course.

    Awesome video!
    I think the "video game movies are bad" curse ended with Wreck It Ralph. While Wreck it Ralph wasn't necessarily based on a video game, it showed filmmakers how to genuinely respect video games as a source material, while being very successful.

      I think it ended with the first Silent Hill movie. That movie gets some hate, but it REALLY is a fantastic horror movie that stands on its own, even if you have nl idea about the video game. Hell, while i was in the hosptial after a surgery i met a nurse who said it was literally her favorite horror movie ever! I asked her if she was a big fan of the game "like myself, alomg with resident evil" she knew about RE as the movies, but had no idea either were video games! Which was incredibly weird to me lol.. also even funnier, she looked a LOT like Rebecca from the first Resident Evil live action cast they used for the game. I told her about that, and how absolutely amazing the games are and begged her to give em a chance if possible. She sounded really excited, i still hope to this day i helped create a survival horror gamer girl LOL... i know it sounds like total BS but i swear its true. Though the part that still floors me is loving a video game movie and having no idea about the game its made from. But i guess it happens. I also introduced her cauciously to Jacobs Ladder.. i hope it didnt screw her up TOO badly..if she watched it lol... i really hope she is doing well...

    I think that the producers should have just continued the director search, rather than just settling with Morton and Jenkel. There’s a saying “If 12 people tell you’re drunk, lie down”. Well if, the entire cast, minus two directors with barely any credits to their name, thought that script was great, then there’s a problem here.

    • @spongebobcoolduke1537

      They should have chosen Stephen Spielberg or George Lucas to be the directors of the film and Disney to distribute the film and kept the old fantasy script but reveal the hag to be peach, change the razorfish to be cheep cheeps and bloopers and change Hildy's name to Daisy and have the brothers reside in the mushroom kingdom at the end with their newly acquired lovers.

    This was fantastic, Luke! I know you're looking for critique since this is the first episode, so one thing I might add in future episodes is a second voiceover for reading out creator quotes, as one voice talking at that speed for 26 minutes did get a little boring, and if I'm being honest, I finished the video in two sittings because of it (and would have regardless of who did the voiceover). I know Rosie worked on the production, her voiceover would lend great contrast to your own.

    • @cutsceneYT

      LUKE: This was something we discussed in the early production days. But we decided it should be me as the script is my voice.

    • @ShiivaWilding
      @ShiivaWilding Рік тому +6

      @@cutsceneYT The script I agree with, it's 98% of the video, but the odd quote you include is not written by you, and thus you give yourself the option of a second voice, for variety if nothing else, in the same way Mastodon switch up vocalists for when a section needs something different.
      I'll more than likely get used to this speed of talking, but it's an idea one could flirt with for an episode to see what people think, or release early on the community tab in snippets for feedback. I'm thinking back to your NRB video essays where you had Oli and the gang read out comments.

    • @user-vi4xy1jw7e
      @user-vi4xy1jw7e Рік тому +3

      You couldn't watch the video in one sitting? Sounds like you have a short attention span.

    • @ShiivaWilding
      @ShiivaWilding Рік тому

      @@user-vi4xy1jw7e No, I gave my reason in the original comment. If the voiceover isn't completely captivating, and you have zero pauses throughout the video for variety, it can get monotonous. There's a very good reason nature documentaries leave big pauses in-between snippets of commentary, and why crime documentaries (that could easily just have every interviewee's comments read out by the voiceover guy) include so many different voices in the re-telling of their story.
      Imagine a film did a 26 minute monologue, who the hell could pull something like that off, regardless of subject matter and without pauses, without the audience getting just a little bored by the end of it? Absolutely no one.

    That is a fascinating look at the movie we had in 1993. I had no idea of the Fantasy script till now. Never bothered looking into Mom and Dad Save the World before, but honestly that little mushroom scene, I could see something like that working. It might have been cheesy, but it would have worked with respect to the games at the time. One thing I cannot get over is Mario being so grouchy and them refusing to use the name "Peach" for the princess (it was always Peach in the Japanese version). But a surreal wizard of oz/Alice in Wonderland movie with two funny bumbling brothers and mushrooms everywhere would have been perfectly respectable. It is surreal that it started out that way and somehow devolved into what we got.

    It's actually quite relaxing, just listening to Luke go off about something he likes: good for you man

  • @rays7805
    @rays7805 Рік тому +1

    The thing about that first draft: even in that version, they got the Princess wrong. The Princess is supposed to be, you know, a princess. Not the girl next door who turned out to be a princess all along but never knew it. She is supposed to be an important figure in her country's ruling class, and a universally desired beauty. This is why the videogame can have the stakes it has without really going into detail about the princess. She's a princess: that's all the stakes you need for that basic setup. She is important. She is desired. And if an ordinary plumber, a blue-collar man with a very dirty job, can rescue this princess, that will make him a great man.
    Now, other than that misstep, which could and should have been corrected in a later draft, this script at least WAS Mario Bros. Not necessarily what I would have done; I would have had all the characters be from the Mushroom Kingdom in the first place, rather than anyone being transported there from our world. But still, this script legitimately was a version of the games. And that aspect is refreshing. There are some very good things in it, too, like the way Koopa hated his father "Because he was weak." Or the way Mario beats Koopa by outsmarting him. This was a solid draft that should have been polished into a finished draft.
    And as soon as the second pair of guys came on and gave their pitch, that strangled to death the spirit of the video games, they should have been kicked right out.
    I've got my own Mario Bros. movie kicking around inside my head. It's a movie that starts with the first video game and works backwards, so that if the video game had been inspired by the movie, that movie would have been something like this.
    It's a shame you didn't make more of this movie's climax. It was cleverly done. I like how they set it up by having Luigi tell the story of the genie and the fisherman to a group of kids. I like the way that Mario tricks Koopa into thinking that he knows what Mario is up to. Again, clever. Koopa thinks Mario is challenging him to get bigger and bigger so that the bridge won't support Koopa's weight anymore. So Koopa just flies up into the air, which the crown allows him to do. But then it turns out Mario was actually getting Koopa to make himself bigger and bigger so that the crown wouldn't fit on his head anymore. And when Koopa flies up into the air, the crown falls off, and Koopa loses all his powers and falls into the lava. I like that part a lot.
    By the way, i wrote a song about screenwriter Barry Morrow. "The sun'll come out Barry Morrow. Bet your bottom dollar Barry Morrow there'll be sun. Barry Morrow! Barry Morrow! I love you, Barry Morrow! You wrote Rain Man... yes you did!"

    It strikes me as odd how many times Hollywood made such similar mistakes adapting brightly-colored, kid-friendly properties to film around that same mid-'80s to mid-'90s timeframe. The Super Mario Bros movie was a weird, self-serious, dark-blue attempt that kept certain superficial elements of the source material while completely jettisoning everything that made it fun or popular in the first place, and moved the action from a colorful fantasy world to a depressing and poorly-lit urban setting -- just like the Masters of the Universe movie, which is often cited as killing that product line altogether.
    I can't think of a similar "let's make it edgy, but not too edgy, also can we film it at night in an unconverted warehouse no more than a half-hour's drive from my house" live-action adaptation from around that time that *did* end up working. At some point you'd think producers would have picked up on that.

    04:55 this isn't entirely surprising. The words of Koji Kondo illustrate this the best. While helping the new Mario composer, Mahito Yokota, during Super Mario Galaxy's development, upon hearing Yokota's preliminary compositions, roughly told him, "If somewhere in your mind, Mario is cute, get rid of it. Mario is cool." That's always how Nintendo has seen Mario, so wanting the movie to have an edge to it actually falls in line with how they have always portrayed him.
    This channel is amazing so far Luke, please keep this going! I find it endlessly fascinating!

And i especially love it for just how incredibly disconnected it it was/is from the actual I.P. because of that, i "and MANY other people" are able to come up with incredibly off the wall ideas of what other franchises would look like if done in the same way. Just look at all the A.I "80s Dark Fantasy" videos. This movie while a flop, and a nightmare to make, was such a blessing in MANY other ways! And not a ton of people see or think about it like that.
