  • Here's our review of JVC's low-cost pro-featured 4K camcorder, the GY-HM170; it's essentially identical to the HM200 but the latter adds XLR audio on a handle, SDI out and live streaming. Functionally, they're the same.

    Nice, thanks for the review, I was just looking for a review of this camcorder.
    I hope to grab one for a review as well and somehow get to compare it to the PXW-X70, it's main competitor! Low light doesn't seem as good (as the X70) from your test shots and the softness wide open is really bad and noticeable!
    Thanks again.

      The X70 kills the JVC in low light (you've seen our review of the X70 I hope?). JVC wins on ergonomics. And for 4K, the Sony costs extra and only does 60Mbps.

    The GY-HM170 comes with the same handle and XLR inputs now. With the Black Friday Sale, it's under $1000. I'd also like to point out that the GY-HM200 comes with a larger battery than the GY-HM170. These cameras aren't perfect, but they're excellent 4K run and gun cameras on a budget.

      Wow, at that price and with the add-ons, it's got to be worth a look despite its shortcomings.

    That was such a very good and informative video and comparison of the two "almost similar" JVC basic 4K UHD camcorders !!!!
    *- How you can compare "JVC HM-200" to the "Canon XA10 or XA20" ??*
    *- Which camcorder possibly you will choose for yourself to have for usage by yourself ??*
    I am owner of that Canon XA10 for a while.
    - For any changes in set-ups and manipulation, you have to go through ugly touch screen of the LCD display. It is a hilarious time consuming procedure, to go EVERY TIME from main Menu, through all the branches of so many sub-menus to find the function which one you want to adjust. It is a very much complicated, inconvenient and very much time consuming procedure !!!!
    - - Canon XA10 & 20 camcorders they have no physical buttons or rings on the lens, dedicated or assigned to the basic and the most usable functions of this video camera like: WB, iris, focus, Gain, manual zoom, etc.
    - - - At least, going through the branches of so many sub-menus of Canon XA10, you can bring on the LCD screen: Waveform Monitor / Histogram & Vectroscope !!!
    - - - - Moreover, when you are shooting in strong sunlight ... the screen is less visible. So the whole process to change something on the touch LCD screen, is also a big time challenging and also a time consuming adventure.
    Beside this Canon XA-10, also I own these funny video cameras:
    1. JVC GZ-HM35BU ... UHD camcorder, I have purchased from the second hand store
    2. JVC GZ-HD5U ... (3 CCD - HD), I received as a gift from my fellow friend
    3. JVC GC-XA1BU ... Wi-Fi action camera, I have also purchased from the second hand store
    - - - - - Sir ... you can believe me or not, but even if I have my own "Canon" XA10, mostly I am using these JVC made little video cameras for my video productions. I like them more, for some convenient reasons.
    - - - - - - One of so many reasons, why I prefer shooting with JVC camcorders, is the overall much better quality of the recorded picture and sound. Recordings from JVC are better colour saturated (warm), they appear richer in detail and more beautifully colorful. They're look kinda ~juicy~ & brighter especially on sunshine day !!!!
    - - - - - - - Instead, from Canon XA10 camcorder, recordings are less saturated and colours are more bluish mixed with the gray (cool & frosty) !! The best simple difference between recordings with JVC & Canon, is possible to observe using your eyes, when you are looking at the same green grass and colorful flowers of being shoot simultaneously under the same lighting condition.
    - - - - - - - - JVC camcorders are responding much better with colour reception than Canons. !!!! For Canon video camera recordings I have to later always use colour correction software, while I am editing them together. It is a time & effort consuming unwanted procedure !!!!
    I am looking forward to possibly sell my XA-10 and to buy similar or even a bit better JVC 4K Ultra HD camcorder for a reason of unification of my video equipment. From your professional experience, which model of JVC camcorder you would suggest me to purchase, to replace my Canon XA10 ?? Sir, any idea ?? Please, respond !!!! Thank you so much. Have a great day :o)
    Sincerely,
    Remi Kowalski

    Nice job and very helpful. That second LCD peaking is the reason I have some sub par footage because I was trying to re-focus based on the LCD during shoots and the results were not good. I was fooled. Looking at your boat footage full screen on my iMac 27'' gives me reason to hope. It looks fantastic and so far I've yet to achieve footage like that. I wouldn't buy this camera again based on low light perf and hoping I can trade in but in the mean time I'll live with it. I mostly shoot speakers who are standing in fluorescent lighting and any tips on camera settings for that would be great.

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  7 років тому

      Yes, it can do nice pix, within certain parameters. I don't have any good tips for fluorescents, sorry, they are hideous lights to film under. Can you add extra lights?

    Outstanding review, thank you! I am currently considering this camera because I like the idea of having 4k but after watching the review, I'm a little worried about how it will be in low light. 4k isn't that big of a priority for me right now, but B&H is having that great deal...The other camera I'm considering is the new Canon Xa30 which seems like it will be great for low light. The majority of my experience has been with Canon products as well so part of me is thinking I should stick with that. Any thoughts on what direction you would reccommend?

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  8 років тому

      Tricky one, that. I wouldn't rate the JVC for low light just because you need to keep that lens above f2. That said, I've not put it up against an XA20 (or 30 since it's not out yet I think) so it may be great in comparison. The obvious advantage of the JVC would be physically more controls for quicker access, compared to the Canon's handful of buttons and single control ring. Then again, I had an XA20 for a couple of years and really liked it - but that was as a fixed camera indoors. When I took it out for roving shooting, I ended up putting it on auto a lot just because trying to fiddle about with the focus and exposure manually was awkward due to its size. So, it really depends what your priorities are.

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  8 років тому

      Hmm, interesting comparison. I couldn't tell you, really, having never put the two against each other. The JVC has a bigger sensor but many more pixels. And "significantly" will mean different things to different people. I think your best bet is just to cast around on UA-cam for samples of each and decide of it looks good enough for your specific needs.
      With apologies, I can't remember about the zoom - I *think* it does (but don't quote me on that). Best thing would be to check the manual which is online at JVC's website as I recall.

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  6 років тому +2

      Other than open the iris as far as possible - but not beyond f2.0 else the image on this camcorder does go soft - no. This is simply an inevitability of a budget camcorder in a dim environment - camcorders need lots of light to function. Even expensive broadcast ones like light (which is why TV studios are absolutely littered with floodlights overhead)

I want to be able to hear everything while the audio is being recorded, not just replaying it after I finish shooting?

    Hi is there a clear winner between this and the Sony FDR AX100 ? The biggest dfference seems to be the sensor size (Sony having the bigger @ 1inch). Also did you test the slow mo function on this ? - Mant thanks.

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  9 років тому

      They're very different beasts. The main difference is ergonomics; the AX100 is an awkward little sod that I didn't like at all (see my CX900 review which is exactly the same but HD). I think your decision will depend more on how you're going to use the camera. I did not test the slowmo.

    So, JVC still could not get image stabilization right. Starting from the GZ-HD7, then GY-HM100, then GY-HM150, and now this one - the OIS is still subpar. I wanted to ask whether the handle/XLR can be purchased separately and whether it can be used with the HM170, but what's the point, the camera is just not good enough. The X70 is clearly a better camera, albeit it cannot do 4K.

    • @TubeShooterMag

      The X70 can do 4K with the latest (paid) firmware update but only at 60Mbps.

      TubeShooterMag Well, even better. Although Sony cannot part with its practice of charging for things that should be free. They used to offer "world cam" upgrade for region-locked cameras for a fee, now they charge for 4K upgrade - one may think they intentionally held this feature back only to be able to charge for it later. Can you help me: Why does the camera create new video files instead of putting everything into one video file?

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  5 років тому +1

      Because each time you press record, it starts a new clip. Otherwise you could end up with a single file the size of your memory card, maybe 32, 64 GB!! There are some camcorders where you can specifically select an option to concatenate all the files into one but it's a fairly rare feature.

    • @DerSaM
      @DerSaM 5 років тому

      TubeShooterMag We have a 128GB card and want to film a wedding, therefore we have the space and need only one video file. Does that mean that this camera does not have this feature? Or is there the opportunity to change this setting?

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  5 років тому

      On this specific camera, I can't recall if it has the feature, you would need to read the manual. If it does not then you can simply assemble the clips in chronological order on your edit timeline and work from there.

    Hi. Would the US version of this camera work in the UK? In terms of power supply and PAL?

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  8 років тому +1

      +christopher dwyer Whilst I am not sure about the power supply (certainly the mains cable would be different), I believe the camcorder is switchable to either 24/25/30/50/60 framerates in the menus (except, oddly, according to the manual if you are shooting in standard def!!). I'm not 100% certain of this so check with the dealer.

      +TubeShooterMag Thanks so much for the reply, you're very nice! I bought a PAL version in the end for UK warranty reasons, but have just one more question, if you don't mind! The shop suggested these cards for 4k shooting, which are insufficient according to your review: www.proav.co.uk/sandisk-64gb-extreme-uhsi-speed-class-3-sdhc-memory-card
      and I have also seen these on ebay, which are 150 MB/s, as you suggest in the review, but aren't UHS-III:
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexar-128GB-Lexar-Professional-1000x-SD-SDXC-Memory-Card-UHS-II-U3-150MB-s/221971387974?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34996%26meid%3D2964fec4d64f489ab8db1ace4a92d04b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D262016830978
      They seem too cheap, given their size. What are your thoughts?
      Thank you for being so helpful. I'd be really stuck if I bought the wrong ones!
      Chris

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  8 років тому +1

      The Sandisk cards will be fine (and you can get them cheaper than at Proav). They're UHS-3, superfast.
      I think you're confusing MegaBytes per second (MB as written on the cards) with Megabits per second (Mb as used in camcorder encoding data rates. The latter is one eighth of the former (or for easy calculation, round it to a tenth)

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  8 років тому +1

      Oh, and my thoughts on any cheap cards off eBay is beware of fakes. I haven't clicked your link so I'm not implying anything about those specific ones or that seller but just generally, be wary.

      Yep. I second that. This year, my brother helped me shoot some footage with a Sony X70, working on HD-setting. I was there all the time, but the shots where he walked backwards alongside a car I should enter, involved a 12 centimeter high step.When I saw the footage, I could almost swear it was steadycam-footage. It was SOOO stable.Could be that it's different on 4K (I can understand that part of the sensor is used in HD-setting to eliminate movement, something you can't do when using the full amount of pixels from the sensor)
      This was a helpful review. I now know this camera would probably annoy me to great heights ;)

    • @TubeShooterMag
      @TubeShooterMag  5 років тому

      Interestingly, the X70 doesn't have the BOSS system so that shot would have been even smoother on something like an AX53 but it's a consumer-grade cam without all the manual controls of the X70. BOSS is only found on the consumer cams because it's quite a bulky system to put into camcorders with larger sensors and lens arrangements, I believe.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 5 років тому

      Wow! Can you imagine how much smoother it will look like with the BOSS system ;) I really thought the X70 had that system as my sister uses it a lot at the local broadcast facility and knows those things almost inside out.

      +Andrew Lomenzo I mean, the XA10 costs a bit more than the HM170 but doesn't shoot 4k, has a lesser zoom, and has poor manual controls. The one thing you get with the XA10 is XLRs. However, the HM200 is more fairly compared to the XA25 which goes for $2500.

    la JVC GY HM 200 no tiene salida por sdi en 4K solo exporta señal 1080, muy mala elección al comprarla.. realmente no es 4K

      That’s a bit unfair to claim. It is 4K sensor, and recording. Many people would use such a camcorder “as is” without an external recorder because that’s usually the point of this type of camcorder.

    Just Buy a Panasonic G7

      The G7 is an entirely different beast with a different user in mind. This is very much a run-n-gun news/events/doco cam with ergonomics to suit.

      Is video quality better for Indoor shoot or better than G7, G7 had major downside the 4GB limit for video per file

      I've never tested a G7 so I can't tell you. The JVC is not a great camcorder though, I was merely pointing out the two are not really comparable.

      It depends what you want to do, what your budget is, what your experience is, and what you like!
