    "Isn't every Avatar a child ?"
    No. Usually, it's not "shit, we need you to be a weapon right NOW!" and they are only told that they are the Avatar with 16... I mean still a child, but at least Mature enough to cope.

    To answer you Nerdy, if you remember with Avatar Roku, most avatars are only told they are when they're late teens. So that they can have enough of a childhood to develop their own personalities and sort of really, to have a childhood. Aang was just told early because of the war, and Korra just was already apparent because she was a bending prodigy.

      Yeh good point, same as Kyoshi but again it was more so because they had no idea who the avatar was so they had to spread the news to even find them only to still be wrong. As well Kuruk not going so well so they wanted a headstart on things

    When Katara makes the water ball you can see some water dripping, but most of it is actually just going back around it. So it looks pretty realistic to me. If you look closely you can see the individual droplets circling, but some people might just think it’s disappearing. So it’s actually amazing CGI! The detail on all the elements are actually incredible, you can tell the CGI artists put a lot of thought and care into this. Everything down to the fire swirling in formation, the rock getting crushed and crumbling, and even the air intensifying the fire is so realistic and accurate. They definitely studied hard on physics and how the elements would clash against each other, so big props to the artists. Also Aangs glider is actually like a giant fan so it makes sense that it would fold up like that, and it’s actually realistic for his size. He can probably help the gliding with his air bending abilities too.

    I think showing the Genocide of the Air Nomads served several important purposes- first, it gives more emotional weight to Aang's loss. Two, it immediately sets the tone of this adaptation. And finally, it very quickly establishes the stakes.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 4 місяці тому +10

      " it gives more emotional weight to Aang's loss"
      But it didn't, at least for me. Because Aang's interactions with the nomads consist entirely of exposition and "tell don't show" (like when he explains to the audience how isolated being the avatar makes him feel, instead of the original show where they show how him being the avatar causes him to get isolated as he loses his playmates before the final nail in the coffin: losing his mentor. Seriously, the original show respected the intelligence of literal children more than this one respect the intelligence of adult viewers). How can I care about a relationship explored exclusively through expository dialogue? Why do showrunners in 2024 still thinks it's okay for character to state their character arcs out loud repeatedly?
      "Two, it immediately sets the tone of this adaptation. And finally, it very quickly establishes the stakes."
      I don't disagree with that, it's not the concept of showing the genocide early that annoys me, it's the execution.

      @@Arkayjiya I'll agree it's less emotional weight to the loss and more the morbidity and shows the last remnants of life of the nomads, but it's not like the show really made the nomads deaths any better cuz when we see any sign of them in the past, it's already with the knowledge they're long dead. It's somewhat sad, but in no way was it ever emotional outside seeing Gyatso. Edit: Also, I would say it actually adds more to how frustrated Aang was by seeing that getting separated from his piers really got to him and was a regular thing before he even became a master

    • @davesenatus5566
      @davesenatus5566 4 місяці тому +12

      @@Arkayjiya You're nitpicking nonesense buddy. Gyatso's death actually felt sad in this, unlike the animated show which didn't show much interaction between them at all to make people be attached to them.

    • @nullunit
      @nullunit 4 місяці тому +6

      @@Arkayjiya In the animated series the same information is related in a similar way (minus the BBQ'd monks) so I don't agree with your reasoning. We get very few flashbacks to Aang's time at the air temple and they are comparable to what we see in this, just in a more linear structure. In general that is how they are reframing a lot of the events from the first show. Taking flashbacks and repositioning them in moments where it drives their version of the story.
      Not to say that it should invalidate your point of view, I think it is fair to be unaffected by it, but the OG show didn't do it better if we're being objective. I think most folks backload their love of the later seasons, which are fantastic, and tend to ignore that season 1 had some awkward moments with pacing and storytelling.
      Personally, I liked seeing Gyatso and Aang's relationship here somewhat more extant. It felt authentic and added a weight to his death that wasn't present in the original show. I also dug seeing Sozen and his soldiers doing their thing, It set the Fire Nation as a real threat rather than bumbling and silly as they did in S1, so as not set such a dark tone so early in a kids show.
      Having binged all 8, there are parts later that fall flat. Often when they are trying too hard to replicate/pander to a more fan servicey moment from the OG show or force a moment. Again though, there are some cringy moments in the original show that they got away with because it was a cartoon. Overall I think they are successful in capturing the spirit of the thing but perhaps I am just more forgiving because I already know the story beats that are coming so if they are shuffled or tweaked it really doesn't bother me.

      @@nullunitI actually do not agree that the live action showed Aang and Gyatso's relationship more. Let's do a comparison.
      In the live action the only visuals we got of Gyatso being Aangs friend and reliable mentor are the scenes where Gyatso tells Aang and other monks that they are friends and that he is his mentor. We did not see them play. We did not see them train. Heck, we didn't even see them laugh.
      In the cartoon, we see Aang play with Gyatso. You know what Gyatso did when Aang was sad about learning he's the avatar? Gyatso made cakes and played a prank on the other leader monks with Aang. They laughed about it. When Aang was obviously sad about it again, Gyatso flipped Aangs clothes over his head and messed with their Pai Sho pieces. They are friends. He is not just a mentor, but it's shown that he actually cares about Aangs feelings. He didn't just outright "say" they are friends, unlike the live action. When the elders wanted Aang to train non-stop, Gyatso refuses and tells them he has to be a kid aswell, and relax every now and then. This angered the monks and made them seperate Aang and Gyatso, leading to Aang running away..
      In the live action Gyatso was the one to tell Aang that he has to separate from him.
      Aside from Gyatso, the scene of him playing with the other kids was vital and their reaction to him being the avatar is also key to Aang's resistance to being the avatar. The live action chose to "tell not show" and just made him say "Im a kid and I like having fun" in a monologue.
      There are some things I liked in this first episode, but it is not how they showed Gyatso, and Aangs relationship with him and the rest of the nomads.
      Edit: Gyatso and Aang did laugh in the live action after an old joke from Aang. But that's just about it.

    This actually shows you don't remember book one at all. I think you only remember book 2 and 3 just from references alone. My one and only criteria for this show was that the bending had to look good. I can always go back to the original show if I want the characters or the story, but I’ve always wanted to see what bending would look like in real life. And on that front, this show is pretty good. Some of it is, as Nerdy said, a little wonky (people who get hit with waterbending are waaay too dry afterwards lol), but I’m quite happy with most of it, and the rough edges can be smoothed out with another season. Even the airbending looks good!
    That being said, I do find some of their choices and changes very interesting. Azula especially. Looking forward to what Nerdy thinks of that interpretation.

    I think I felt a lot like the N&C's post episode breakdown. Just... A bit unsure? It was just a really strange feeling that while I saw the quality of production with my own eyes, something just feels... Off. Was I bored? Nerdy's "low energy" observation struck a chord with me, there.
    I don't know. I just didn't feel the emotional punch, or the humor, or just the flat-out fun "kinetic energy" of the One Piece live action. I don't know. I just feel that where I couldn't wait for the next episode of One Piece, I was just OK with watching through the Avatar season. The show didn't do it for me, I dipped after the first episode. I had a number of problems with the story but a big problem was that more "adult" tone. I feel like the showrunners saw the humor in the animated show and attributed it to the show "being for kids", but when you remove the humor the show becomes more generic, if that makes sense. It's like the original Pirates of the Carribean movie, if Jack Sparrow had've been cast with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or Ben Affleck it still probably would've been a perfectly adequate movie but it wouldn't have been the must-see chart-topper that got everyone into the theater without Johnny Depp's unexpected performance.
    Also this episode was so info-dumpy. I mean they did the opening monolouge twice in a single episode, and they kept telling us that Aang was a silly kid without showing it, telling us that Aang and Gyatso had a close relationship without showing it. It felt like the showrunners were too worried that if people didn't understand all of the relationships, magic system, and the lore 100% from episode 1 no one would stick around, but with the animated series I remember being totally confused with what was going on and was willing to stick around and gradually learn things because I was so invested in the characters and their journey.

    These two can be pretty harsh… every 20 seconds a CGI critique. Netflix made the same choice here with the effects as One Piece: less photorealistic and more cartoonifying reality. Because REAL people can’t float on air! Bisons can’t fly. There has to be some suspension of disbelief over cynicism. It’s no different than Doctor Who or Sandman. This is a world but not reality

    I'm glad you commented on how good the lighting is, because I didn't notice the well lit scenes on my first watch, just the one at sunset where it feels like Kitara is getting sidelight from two ERS lamps that make the shadow from her hair loopy look real weird. IDK if it was in pickups, or shot on one of those wrap-around LED sound stages and they couldn't use a more distant and diffused source, but it got right under my skin.

    I don't think some of the acting really played well, gran gran in particular felt really weak which made her giving the opening monologue stand out even more. But on the whole I enjoyed the first episode. My only qualm with them opening on the attack against the Air Nomad's is it does mean they can't adapt The Storm the way the cartoon did which is a shame. If anything was going to be adapted close to 1:1 I probably would have made that episode the thing, but then again maybe even trying to replicate it is a bad idea. We'll see. After episode 1 I really think my main concern regarding the show really just was the performances, not because they were outright awful but several of them just felt shaky.

    As someone who has no knowledge of the original comics/cartoons except a few pop culture references, I thought they did a little too much tell and not show, especially the "thoughts out loud" from Aang, which gets better as the series goes on. As far as the frame rate thing, I agree. I still use a plasma screen, to avoid the worst of the AI adjustments from the LED screens (still horrible with the newest high-tech screens 20 years later, btw). What Nerdy is talking about is made so much worse with the way the modern screens AI adjust the foreground a fraction of time before the background. Even with the old school plasma, my eyes and brain still noticed something weird with the frame rate on occasion in this episode. I figured it was probably CGI adjustments somewhere on the screen.

  • @I.Lostalim

    Great reaction as always. I agree about some of the visual impacts too especially with the Avatar state, I don't know if the uncanny effect is on purpose to make him look distinctly different from the humans in that moment, or just a limitation of the CGI
    As someone who hasn't seen the animation - the 100 years ago stuff really helped the writers to "show not tell" through the rest of the episode, and even the season to be honest.
    They can hook us back to that without having to interrupt big moments with awkward expositional dialogue.
    From the opening scene with the messenger not only showing me what bending is, but the absolute tyranny of the Fire Lord. Also the Sky Temple where I can emotionally connect to Aang's past, which informs many of the future scenes and his disconnect. Also the brutality of the attack.
    When Sokka was conflicted, I viscerally felt the reality that they could turn the whole cove to ash - I knew what Sokka knew and understood his fear and choices better for it. It also made his bravery mean a lot more to me.
    The same for Aang, both his disconnect from this time to his past, but also the raw emotion at discovering what otherwise might have been just another body to me - I felt the loss he felt in that moment, somewhere deep in my core.
    They could have written around, but I agree with nightly in that it's all or nothing for the opening. Either give me nothing to intentionally leave me confused about the world and learn as I go - or go all in to give me an emotional buy in with all the characters. A middle ground would have felt off by achieving neither of those.

    every reacter has been comparing it to the original animation.
    having no preconceptions, it seems perfectly fine to me as a way to tell the story of the avatar and the lore of this world. by the end of the show (this season and any others to follow) i expect i'll know as much about aang as those who watched the last airbender cartoon though i will have reached my conclusions completely differently.

    Personally, I LOVE the choice to have Gran-Gran tell the opening monologue as an old legend, a story handed down through generations. It adds weight and scale to how long Aang has been gone, knowing that **GRAN-GRAN** heard that story as a little girl.
    That’s how old the story is, that’s how long Aang has been gone. Saying “he’s been gone for 100 years” is one thing but saying “Gran-Gran heard that story as a child” puts it in better and clearer perspective.

    That was dope, love y'all.
    I agree with Nerdy's points as to why the there actually a story purpose for showing the attack on the southern air temple.
    It was something that is primarily subtext in the original show, in the way that Clarus seems to prefer which is totally valid. I just don't think it had no purpose the way it was presented here. It sets stakes and actually gave me a stronger attachment to Gyatso.
    It also sets the stage for what the fire nation is capable of very early since they aren't as worried about scaring the hell out a bunch of kids. I feel like this very much targeted at the now 20-30 year olds who watched it when it aired or old heads like me who never stopped watching cartoons and animation.

The cartoonish violence is always going to be less impactful, so I think it's good that from the start they set the tone of what you can expect in the live-action. I watched this episode with few expectations, and I thought it was good overall. There are some choices they made that I like, some that I don't like, and some that I'm not sure about yet. So far, my biggest criticisms are that Sokka doesn't have a boomerang and that Katara has been stripped of the things that made her interesting and unique. She didn't lose her temper once this episode, and we didn't get a sense of the responsibility she'd taken on or how fast she had to grow up. We see her kindness and compassion, but her maternal side is missing. It also looks like they're dropping the Kataang romance, which disappoints me. That drives so much of the plot, I'm not sure how they are going to work around it
