    Badd Medicine here and its Catch Me If You Can reaction time
    Frank Abagnale, Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) worked as a doctor, a lawyer, and a co-pilot for a major airline -- all before his 18th birthday. A master of deception, he was also a brilliant forger, whose skill gave him his first real claim to fame: At the age of 17, Frank Abagnale, Jr. became the most successful bank robber in the history of the U.S. FBI Agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) makes it his prime mission to capture Frank and bring him to justice, but Frank is always one step ahead of him. This stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Nathalie Baye, Amy Adams, and James Brolin in supporting roles.

      Determining what is true or not is difficult. Frank never saw his father once he ran away. He didn't see his mother until after he was caught. The father wasn't a conman.
      The TV Show White Collar starts following a similar premise, but with art, not checks. The first few seasons are excellent.

  • @HerHollyness

    So in terms of how much of it is real, it is based on a book that an actual guy called Frank Abagnale wrote and claimed was true, but it later emerged that much of it was an exaggeration. He did forge cheques and he did pose as a pilot, but there’s no evidence he posed as a doctor, lawyer or any of that stuff. Plus the amount of the cheques he forged was not that large - when he was arrested and charged it was actually somewhere just under $2000. That was still a lot of money for the time, like $20,000 today, but definitely not as much as he or this movie claimed!

    I am an investigator in exam security at a testing company and you all are correct in what you were saying about how we're always playing catch-up. The "bad guys" in the world of Catch Me If You Can and in my world are out there dreaming up new ways to be bad. It's our job to figure out what they're doing and how to mitigate it. But while we're doing that, they or some other bad guy is already dreaming up a new way to be bad. It can be a frustrating job, but the tests I protect are in the medical field, so what keeps me going is not wanting the bad guys/girls to help people care for people without earning that right.

    I think this is one of Spielberg's most underrated movies. Very rarely is it listed among his "masterpieces". If you consider Spielberg the father of the pop culture blockbuster, this movie didn't have the box office success for it, but it certainly fits in spirit and charm with Spielberg's best work. I remember hearing somewhere on drug dealers. Something along the lines of people living on the streets aren't dumb, the drug dealers are the ones doing high end calculus and chemistry with no mistakes. Just because we see movies and shows depicting how criminals are dumb, doesn't mean all are. Many are highly intelligent. And either their lives started off rough so they got into criminal life easily, or they discovered a thrill and fell into it. In the first case it makes a lot of sense, since many end up on the streets and needing to survive.

    Just a heads-up, there's a bit more controversy around this movie than there used to be but that shouldn't stop anyone from enjoying the film on its own merits.
    Basically it came to light the real Frank Abagnale at least exaggerated some of his claims. Some of what he did is verifiable, but most of it is lacking evidence -
    which considering the fantastical scale which he claims his crimes occurred at would seem to be telling.
    Bigger crimes tend to evoke greater accountability and evidence in proportion to those crimes. Additionally the book that was written about him (and what is used as the primary source for the movie) is not autobiographical, it's a story told for the purposes of entertainment.
    So all I'm saying is - take the "true story" element of the movie with a grain of salt, just like you should with most true stories adapted to hollywood.
    That being said, still a huge fan of the movie.

    Okay. Most of the inaccuracies were about details, not the bigger claims.
    1. His father was not a con-man. He was, in fact, a law-abiding citizen who did not approve of Frank's criminal lifestyle.
    2. Frank lived with his father for after the divorce before running away. His mother never remarried, and he never saw his parents after he ran away.
    3. He never married Brenda Strong, but he *did* have a torrid affair with Cheryl Tiegs, the first American supermodel.
    4. The movie skips over his short time career as a sociology professor.
    5. He didn't escape through the airplane through the toilet. He actually went out through the galley.
    6. He really did study and pass the bar.
    7. He did work for the FBI, teaching agents about various check scams.
    8. To tell the truth, a game show based on imposters, did feature Frank Abignale, Jr.
    9. His career as a "pilot" did not last as long as the film implies, as the airlines caught on pretty quickly that an imposter was bouncing around on the take.

  • @Jessica_Jones
    @Jessica_Jones Місяць тому +1

    It's certainly not a movie of epic proportions like we often see from Spielberg, but it still exudes every ounce of magic that he puts into all his other movies. I think it's sort of a quiet gem because underneath the thrills and the comedy and even the romance is still the pain of a kid running away against his will, just looking to get his happy family back. I also really love Brenda...her hurts and sweetness break my heart and make me want to hug her, and Frank's love and desire to be there for her is really meaningful. Then as he's finally wanting to be vulnerable and open with her dad he's ultimately still trapped in the lies he's told. Agh, it's so good! I often avoid movies with a lot of sadness because they tend to lean in too hard on all the weighty emotions, but for all of the uniqueness of this story, it's still so relatable.
    Also, when I first saw this as a teen, I was so captivated by the music. It was unlike anything I thought I had ever heard from John Williams. Then the next time I watched How to Steal a Million, I realized there were quite a few similarities! Pretty sure I hear more and more each time I watch either film. "Johnny" sure did channel the 60s so well for this film 😃

    • @ct6852
      @ct6852 8 днів тому

      Yeah the music is a major part of what makes it great imo. But Spielberg's movies always have a way of creeping back up into the consciousness over the years. You're right, at the heart of the story is just a kid trying to get that family love and stability back, and looking for it in the wrong places. That's what makes it resonate.

    "To Tell The Truth" was a hosted morning/afternoon quiz show where 3 regulars would hear facts about the 3 contestants. Each ask them a few questions. Then have to guess which contestant was 'Telling The Truth'. #1, 2, or 3. The show was very popular & ran for years. I haven't Googled it but clearly remember watching it on a regular basis. (Think early ground work for "Hollywood Squares" & you'd be pretty damn close.)
