There is another saying, "If you can't beat China, sanction it."
It is ironic the West is sanctioning China because China is better at capitalism than the West. It is also childish in a way because increasing tariffs on Chinese EVs, which are not only cheaper but have a higher specification, make the transition from fossil-fuelled vehicles to EVs slower if they are less affordable. Western politicians often pay lip service to sustainability and carbon neutrality but making EVs more expensive is not the way to achieve them.

Why should the American and European people put up with loosing the opportunity to own cheaper and better Evs just because of the incompetence of their leaders?
There is also Chinese over dependence on Export market. Average Chinese worker is not paid enough to afford many consumer goods.
This is why Chinese imports are so limited in value compared to their trade partners.
If Chinese cars are say 20% cheaper, why don’t the Americans and Europeans lower their car costs by 20% so that they can “compete”? That would make more sense isn’t it, than extract 20% more tax from their own American and European customers?
Because of greed and / or un inability to do so from a financial perspective. The energy costs and everything else have gone so high, they might not afford to lower the price. The US and EU are light years behind China in the production of EVs in terms of technology, designs and costs. China doesn’t have to sell their EVs to EU and the US (100% tariff!!!). Many countries in the global south are only too willing to buy affordable Chinese EVs! I hope common sense prevails in the UK and that it will not follow these suicidal examples!
I think it’s a bit too late for the UK as they seem to be on board with this since they’re part of the G7. But yea … there is still a hope that common sense prevails.

About the Chinese cars you should be saying bring them in and we will make our people pay a 48 % fee. It’s not the Chinese companies that pay the tariffs it’s you the buyers . And that extra money goes to the government .

tariffs are import taxes that are imposed on companies based in that country. so costs to consumers are higher thereby increasing inflation.
tariffs is used to make politicians sound tough. essentially used to protect local companies. how many eu car companies? fiat, seat, vw, mercedes, audi, Citroen - so Germans car makers would benefit the most but Germans care makers don't want tariffs.
The thing is that the EU could have used the money we’ve been sending to other countries to subsidise different industries. Instead we are poor AND stupid. They’ll do anything that they think makes them look good / tough.
