I like Tarheel Ants grouted test tube inserts for founding Pogonomyrmex queens! Great product and the queens really appreciate the rough rocky texture! I recommend them to all beginning ant keepers for this species!
Nice formicarium and ants I have yet to keep this species successfully 😆 but I have a good spot where I can get some very nice purplish colored rugo queens 👍
Thanks! I have been quite fortunate with many ant species being successful from the first attempt. Pogos overall seem content to grow so long as they have heat and good seeds. Good luck hunting some queens this coming season!
Moisture like that appears when the temperature inside the nest is warmer than the outside temperature. Leads to condensation. I keep the room close to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The heating pad is also away from the water towers towards a drier part of the nest. This has resulted in no condensation so long as no temperature extremes occur in the room. Most ant keepers usually use heating cables because it applies heat in a smaller area. I myself never found myself being fond of them, but they certainly do work.
Currently keeping these big girls! They are my favorite native harvester. In your opinion do they do okay without cover over the nest or are they easily stressed by light?
I have been using a mixture of Kentucky grass seeds, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and chia seeds. Tarheel ants typically provides Kentucky grass seeds for their Pogonomyrmex.
I do not make them for sale. I know a lot of people ask, but it’s simply not something I wish to do. I do DIY videos so others can get a good idea of how to make their own formicariums.
They should be about 3 years old now. I received the colony as a single queen in a test tube setup. They have come a long way with a few ups and downs.
That’s an awesome nest and out world nice job

Watching ants moving into a new nest is one of the most satisfying thing to watch
Excellent video!
Thank you. Sometimes you just have to sit back and watch the ants!
Very cute and awesome to watch. Thank you for sharing another lovely video!
Are those mini hearths or the mini hearth XLs?
Very nice btw, good video.
Your DIY project looks VERY nice, great work!
Nice Video 👍
Thank you!
I am actually planning to get harvester ants for my first colony. Your video gives me a general idea for their behavior. Thanks!
You’re welcome! They are really easy to keep so long as they are kept warm with a good supply of seeds
Great video I hope to have a colony of them one day to knock it off my bucket list.
Thank you! They are really abundant in west Texas. We jokingly call them the angry black harvester ants
Personally, I like to let the ants build the nest. I like natural earth nesting setups
u have a stray sugar ant
What a beautiful large ant, adding them to my list . Haha never seen so many seed cases 😅 there new nest setup looks really good though 👌
They are very messy ladies haha. Husking seeds endlessly!

How do you clean those nests? You can't hardly take the glass off and keep them in....
Come on! More and new videos! lol Please?
How did you get the moisture to stop building on the glass being that your heat source is underneath? I like the heat pad idea...

What kind of seeds do you use? I’m planning on getting a colony and I’ve been looking at what types of food to give them

Still looks smal to me. much going on.
1:07 gypsum formicarium how much would it cost to for us to buy it from you if we could have it look like that identically in 1:07 timeframe

What container did you use for the diy outworld?
It’s a large model car display case from Hobby Lobby
What are the dimensions of the formicarium ?
And is the heat pad on a thermostat? If so at what temp?
It is roughly an 8”x8” nest. The heating pad is not on a thermostat.
what was your old nest?
It was mentioned in the video. These were two Tarheel Ants MiniHearths connected via a tube. They are the basic formicariums sold by THA.
@@TheAnttarium sorry mate, i'm not totally fluent in english
That’s alright. I wish I could put subtitles in many languages.
How old is the colony
