You know what speaks more about the quality of the scouts, and the beauty of that song? Not the cheering, not all the comments talking about their quality, but the full five seconds of silence after the song is finished before anyone can even think to clap. THAT is how you know they're good.

I remember playing this for the last time before finals in 98 in Orlando. Back then in retreat all the corps got to play themselves off from finals, and we finished up our night by singing it. Never, never forget.

Thank you wilsonkm for you kind words...I was an ageout of the scouts in 2009 and marched in 08. This hornline unfortunately did not receive the credit it was due in 09. I also have much admiration and respect for the HNC. This was a very tough season to endure considering the great talent the corps presented at the beginning on the year. I am very excited for the 2010 corps to make great strides in the legacy that is the Madison Scouts.

there are two world class ensembles that live in a place that only two can live. they exist with such respect and integrity that cannot and will not EVER be equaled...except possibly by each other. those groups are, of course, the Madison Scouts and the Santa Clara Vangaurd.

@MendTheWorld I think it is also important to note that Dr. Williams is an alum of the Scouts, he played mello in 96. He is an amazing instructor.

I was there at finals this year, I could not believe how the system works now. They did not even want us to give our corp medals on the field. They announced the winner of open class, and then wanted us off. Everyone just ignored them and stayed to give out medals. Amazing...

@RumRoad The song is called "You'll Never Walk Alone," from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. We play it a little slower than the original musical version.

I love this song thanks to the Scouts. My band director in 1979 loved the Scouts. We played this as a warm-up... and then Maleguena as the opener. My mother passed during the summer a few years back. If it would have been during the school year, I would've gotten this song played by my HS band at her burial. Absolutely a beautiful song.

20 CONTRAS!!!! Man I can't wait to hear the bottom of the Scouts next year. Nothing wrong with the sizzle of a great soprano line, but if you wanna have a great steak you need more than sizzle. Contras ARE the steak!!!! I can feel the low brass wave hit me in the stands now.
    Good luck next year Scouts!!!!

@partysince96 I did march, also on baritone (2000 Southwind). There have been some rule changes since way back in 1992. Our instruments had 3 valves (our contras had 4 valves). 2000 was also the first year corps could use instruments in the key of Bb. All of this information is easy to find if you want it and you won't find anyone who calls a brass instrument with valves a bugle, no matter what key the instrument is in or what activity it is played in. The activity does not define the instrument

The nod from Tyler to Nick says it all. I was two from the mellos in this shot and actually stayed in that hotel in the background during finals week this year. Semi finals night I walked over and found almost the exact same spot and stood there and just remembered the feeling I had playing never walk with my brother for the very last time. It's too bad this amazing hornline ended with a subpar year. MYNWA brothers

Still living with a vivid memory of the '83 Scouts, playing this for Retreat at the Bloomington IN contest -- the only corps to use a flowing ballad as they exited.
In spite of being on the move in regular step, they managed to deliver a fully-realized, richly expressive and powerful version that came across almost like a movement from a symphony. It was absolutely transporting and magical.
By comparison, even this video's very nice play-through sounds oddly metronomic and careful.

@partysince96 back in the day they were bugles, today, not bugles. True trumpets with 3 valves, true baritones/euphoniums, tubas (contras), and the like, all Bb except mellophones (key of F), but all have 3 valves these days, contras may be the only exception of that with sometimes 4.

@jomolido The Scouts did perform at Quarter & Semifinals, but didn't make the cut for Finals. Fans love the Scouts' shows, but with the DCI ranking system, relatively few were on hand to see them perform early in the day.
After 4 years of seeing the various corps, and the audience response to their shows, my admiration for the Scouts AND my ill-feelings toward DCI and their judging system have both grown progressively stronger. Much more could be said, but space (and tact) do not allow.

    @CRAZYOAK1216:
That would be me... Jeff Levine... and that's my son, Aaron, Trumpet section leader, on the left end of the line. 15 feet further wouldn't have done any good... That's about the quality you get recording video with a Nikon SLR still camera. The rat-a-tat of drum lines in the background doesn't help either. Still, I'm glad I was able to capture it.

@flugel76 I am not incorrect. A bugle is not defined by the type of bore it has. Lots of brass instruments have conical bores (Euphoniums, tubas, coronets) none of which are bugles. Bugles often have conical bores and it might be that a conical bore is one of the requirements of being a bugle, but it is not the defining characteristic. Being valveless IS what makes it a bugle. Pull up any definition and that is what it will tell you. Show me how I am wrong and I will gladly correct myself.

@flugel76 Don't be dumb. A bugle has no valves and the only way pitch is changed is by the players embouchure. Drum and bugle corps haven't used true bugles long before most of us were born. Since you want to argue semantics, the Scouts' arrangement was not on bugles, it was on brass instruments pitched in G. The Scouts' could not have played this on bugles if you really want to get technical.

I don't know how much longer DCI can survive. I'm very close to the caption head of an up and coming open class corp, and I spent about 3 weeks on tour this last year teaching. I hear some pretty nasty things through the grapevine. Apparently, you, I, and some others around here are not the only ones fed up with the direction (merging with BOA) of the activity.
