11:58 that’s crazy. I had a small role in a UK movie back in 2014. They offered to put me in a hotel for two days, or have a driver pick me up from home and bring me back every day.
Saying that she shouldn’t have spoken out because it was eventually handled is unfair to Taraji. Whether it was handled or not, Taraji still went through it, and want the next generation of black actors to know that they shouldn’t have to settle for less or be shamed for wanting more.
Dee, Viola did speak on the discrepancies and unfairness in certain roles in her book "Finding Me", and she spoke out against the industry after decades of unfairness and the private talks not working. It's a great read and I do recommend that everyone give it a listen on Audible, at least! She also talks about her upbringing, inspirations and process into finding herself!
So glad people are understanding that barely breaking even is not the same as making a profit. It's like buying something for $1000 flipping it and making only $1012. What are profiting from with that extra $12? You wasted your time and effort.
You know what, I’m a little afraid that most of these actresses, who spoke up unfortunately might be blacklisted. We might not see them in too many films moving forward.😬 I don’t want that to happen and I hope they all succeed 💛
I mean people have negotiated behind the scenes and got ignored, that's why there was a strike for awhile with writers and it shows that they talk behind the scenes and got ignored
15:30 janet jackson too. She got a WORLDWIDE blacklisting of her music that prevented her to chart and stiffled her bag but she never (publicly) spoke up against Les Moonves
This is referring to the movie budget side on how much studios put into advertisement so there is a pre budget and after budget. Also, a lot of movies/ franchises are struggling, and streaming is killing the theaters' experience
I don't think it's fair that people are putting all the responsibility on Oprah. She was one of 5 investors, Taraji being one of them. Oprah agreed to pay a certain amount to help get this movie made and it doesn't make sense to ask her alone to shuffle in more money to pay people more. If anything people should be blaming the studio pay department but no one knows those people so it's easier to blame Oprah the billionaire.
I get both sides really. What taraji saying is correct black people do have to ask for things that shouldve already been considered. I think at that level in her career she feels she shouldnt have to ask for anything that's basic hospitality. Also shes right that black people dont stick together like on stage they were blobbering with taraji when she was emotional about how they dont get equal pay. Now that they in oprah presence they acting like everything was great. Which is it? Because why you crying on stage if you feel nothing was wrong
Google says the budget for the little mermaid was 300 Million, and the total box office is 569 Million, so that’s a profit of 269 Million, so flop where?
I feel like the reason, so many people are gonna get the message she’s trying to convey. Is because it’s not “in general”. If she didn’t do it this way a lot of people would have never heard what she said, because I wouldn’t have gotten as much attention
All the actors and Hollywood just ruin the want to see the movie. I get speaking out on inequality and injustices. 100% percent if you’re not getting what you’re owed, do what you have to do. But as a viewer it takes away the movie magic. 2023 has been a flop for Hollywood cinema period. Everything feels redone and cheap. Hopefully in the future they just start making good movies with great stories and flushed out characters.
Who is the highest paid feature film black actress? Bc I see a lot of ppl saying Taraji isnt that great to demand what she’s demanding. Okay so who is. Is it Angela Bassett? Viola Davis? Bc I’m sure they would say the same thing as what she’s saying. At least there’s some black men who have broken through to make $20 million movie. Few but they exist. Sadly tho it’s usually for action movies. They just have more opportunities. Black women aren’t starring in action movies and there simple dramas aren’t going to be box office hits so the opportunity to make a lot is just non existent. Sad.
It seemed like it eventually got handled by continuously asking oprah to talk to the ppl at the top. Plus I think she mad that she been in the game for 20 years and got paid 150k for color purple. Which is no money for an entire movie. I get why she mad lol, if they spoke in general you would still still think they made good money. If taraji never been specific nobody would've known they be offering her 100k for a movie when she one of the top black actresses
I'm not gonna discount Taraji's own personal feelings, but isn't it her people's job to negotiate how much she'd get paid for the film? If she wasn't liking the figures & felt like she was owed more due to her past work, why did she sign on? And then why complain about it after the fact & after contracts were signed?
I’ll say it since ppl keep holding her hand, taraji is not a draw!!! Good actress sure and padded resume but that doesn’t translate to money for studios, she’s a solid hand

Financially like dee said they are considered flops this is facts based on earnings just because you see a lot of noise surrounding the movie doesn’t mean it’s successful
They're not flops because they were bad. I watched both, even saw TLM twice and enjoyed both of them. They flopped because of earnings at the box office. Idk why people don't understand that. I had some girl call me a hater because I said TLM wasn't that successful. Like... I wasn't saying the movie was bad
I think that the fact that the bad experience happened when it shouldn't have is part of the purpose of speaking out. And just because there's a consequence to speaking out to things happening that is wrong doesn't mean you shouldn't bring it to light. There's been changes in society and culture with risk involved for standing up for what's right and bringing things to light. It's unfortunate that the reality is that there is someone that has to take the poo and the downfall for any change to happen. I don't think encouraging someone to not bring things to light in an industry that happens to have a lot of powerful players is a good idea. Nothing will ever change it would just get swept under the rug. We need to know what's going on as consumers and where to support our coins.
its really a dam if you do, and dam if you don't, cause now if you aggressively negotiate they can still say you're being difficult. I really think it comes down to who's the most bankable & marketable with an amazing team knows how to make you money!
People negotiate aggressively behind the doors, this whole "being difficult" is about taking shit to public. Being difficult is how negotiate if you are worth anything, if you want wage increase and your boss says no, its time to say Im looking for a new job and will leave asap when I find it

The little mermaid went beyond box office numbers tho.. it was a world wide phenomenon because of the diversity it brought. It was the top selling toy of 2023 , it also made the biggest debut on Disney plus for a live action , these are huge numbers .. and telling Disney , people didn’t pay up because they were racist , cause they jumped to Disney plus and the numbers skyrocketed for little mermaid. It’s not about the box office alone , look at beauty and the beast .. made a billion dollars but who actually likes Emma Watson as belle ? Nobody. Nobody does , she can’t even sing. Her aftermarket math was a flop , couldn’t even sell toys , the little mermaid even has a cookware line , school bags , everything. u want movies to have longevity when it comes to marketing and halle Bailey as Ariel has that market up. People want her as Ariel even the haters can’t escape keep the numbers up for her. She was by far the best casting ever for a Disney princess , her energy just matched Ariel’s and her voice .. there’s plans for more. for sure Disney knows they can do more with it. I’m sure they will pick it up , there’s a brand new series for Halle’s Ariel on Disney junior. Disney knows there’s a market for it and it ain’t small
Also..... I feel like People Get it Wrong. Yes you get the Award for your performance in a movie that was amazing and moving BUT does your audience speak to the movie you are playing, can you guarantee that having win those award that you can sell movies, that you can make back the investment in you that you are asking for. Lets be Honest - Black people not all don't support they own financially. SO where as white people would go to a movies and watch it regardless just because they like the actor and because they have the generational wealth to do it and wont be affected at all. Black People dont have the same luxury and those that do aren't focusing on watching movies they are focus on themselves. So winning the Award doesn't mean you have the financial pull to equate to the other awardees. Monique got popular on a Show we paid pennies or nothing really to watching on Tv. I will say Black Panther was probably the most watched Movie by Black People because it catered to the majority of people. The Colour Purple is another Slave, oppressed Black people movie. I watched Black Panther Twice, and I wouldn't watch The Colour Purple again though it was musically beautiful; they were some very Tough Scenes to sit through. I wanna see Movies where Black People Win, I am so tired of the movies that win oscars are these .... Poor Black People Movies... Im SO over it. Sorry for my Rant. Just my Thoughts. ( Not sure if you read these but Dee Shanell continue your great work)
I mean when J law going on those rants forever about only getting paid 10s of million one one really said anything. Why can't henssen call out her pay that seems like its only a couple 100 thousand or 10s of thousand
I personally have mixed views of this. On one hand i find it a bit unprofessional to be voicing problems on National Tv when attached to the Show. Especially when it was fixed and address. To mention it still means you are saying you shouldn't of have had to ask but maybe they didn't have to do this before for other productions . I was a proud Gladiator watching Scandal - There was a scene when Abby (The Press secretary) was severely abused by her ex husband in the past who was now in line to be the US senator and Olivia Pope was like use your podium and speak but Abby said what happens to those ladies who speak, they became Anita Hill, Monica Lewinsky, They stood up and told their story and Where are they now??. On the other side i think as black people we must voice and stand up for equality for our own integrity but sometimes our ego can make the fight for equality look very much like pompousness. Just my Thoughts. Being Black - Suffer and thrive in Silence at your own mental demise or Speak and Suffer at the risk of your career. You choose.
Some Context: Typical Breakdown for a Feature Film: (1) Pre-Production: (i.e. cast, crew, locations) + (2) Production: (actual filming) + (3) Post-Production: (most $$$ part i.e. editing, sound, etc.) + (4) Promotion: which runs typical 2 to 2.5x the combined the Pre-Production & Production costs. The total budget for the Color Purple was $55.6M - In reality, they likely spend another $50-$125M to promote & release this film. Opening weekend grossed $11.7M, & and of Jan 10 they earned another $4.6M. Granted the movie may be classified as a "flop" in comparison to Major Feature Films, but in the end, if the musical was motivational , impactful, or resonated with you ~ that's all that matters....

11:58 that’s crazy. I had a small role in a UK movie back in 2014. They offered to put me in a hotel for two days, or have a driver pick me up from home and bring me back every day.
That's the UK though. They might do things differently.
@@puffball4484 this is a normal thing in Hollywood
8:20 “I’m not getting emotional. Something’s actually in my eye.” took me out 😭
Saying that she shouldn’t have spoken out because it was eventually handled is unfair to Taraji. Whether it was handled or not, Taraji still went through it, and want the next generation of black actors to know that they shouldn’t have to settle for less or be shamed for wanting more.
damn if little mermaid flopped u know for a fact they aint making that live action princess and the frog😭😭😭😭
You already know 😂
The issue is that Ariel cartoon has a white drawn princess while the princess and the frog has a black princess.
There won't be the same controversy
It won’t be the same
You know they gonna be saying "Make her white and see how it feels omggg" smh bye
@@holysex1052but will ppl go see it? I feel like the same ppl that wouldn’t go see little mermaid are probably over the Disney remakes all together
Petition for Dee to drop a skincare routine 👇💫
These celebrities don’t get along and It’s deeper than the petty surface shxt we assume it is
15:30 janet jackson too. She got a WORLDWIDE blacklisting of her music that prevented her to chart and stiffled her bag but she never (publicly) spoke up against Les Moonves
Speak on it.
This is referring to the movie budget side on how much studios put into advertisement so there is a pre budget and after budget. Also, a lot of movies/ franchises are struggling, and streaming is killing the theaters' experience
all these trial and tribulations… all for that box office revenue to be on STRUGGLE at the end of it 😩
Oprah is friends…CLOSE friends with Tyler Perry enough said.
All the secrets this year about to be exposed
I wasn’t tryna see The Color of Trauma anyway 🤷🏾♂️ but Taraji deserves better
Wow, yeah that was a terrible press run, smh.
I'm not getting emotional im just scratching my eye - Dee Shanell 😂😂😂😂
Dee it’s ok boo we know you was wiping a tear🥹🥹🥺
She gon get you 😭
Your skin looks so good hello?
Google says the budget for the little mermaid was 300 Million, and the total box office is 569 Million, so that’s a profit of 269 Million, so flop where?
I feel like the reason, so many people are gonna get the message she’s trying to convey. Is because it’s not “in general”. If she didn’t do it this way a lot of people would have never heard what she said, because I wouldn’t have gotten as much attention
Lol girl that is Fantasia😭😭
She's obviously talking about the girl next to her 💀she has the same smile as Fantasia and they favor each other
@@fremybaby1190 lol ok I had a feeling she might be talking about her
also the fact that she was on all the trailers and didnt get invited its crazy to me
Don't accept a contract and then bitch about it afterward. You need to fight for what you think your worth before signing on the dotted line.
I would wait to do that after
Exactly that not how it works but people will let you fail Industry has along Memory
lol dee saying something is in my eye 😂😂😂😂 I’m not crying
MONIQUE TRIED TO WARN US ABOUT OPRAH
If taraji never been specific nobody would've known they be offering her 100k for a movie when she one of the top black actresses
her point is white actors dont get to even ask for things like this and she has to.
11:25 clock that tea dee
The thing is everyone is underpaid
Dee don’t apologize for talking and reacting I like to hear your take if someone has a problem they can watch the original video lol
Lol at the remix on the title
I'm not gonna discount Taraji's own personal feelings, but isn't it her people's job to negotiate how much she'd get paid for the film? If she wasn't liking the figures & felt like she was owed more due to her past work, why did she sign on? And then why complain about it after the fact & after contracts were signed?
Exactly when its comes to negotiating you gotta have a backbone and say no. They dont want to pay extra for fun
These people beed to turn theses damn cameras off.
I’ll say it since ppl keep holding her hand, taraji is not a draw!!! Good actress sure and padded resume but that doesn’t translate to money for studios, she’s a solid hand
a whole mess
The little mermaid had the fifth highest opening for Memorial Day in history😅
it still barely broken even so......
@@aengusog3415 but it did. And u mad
@@proctorstheaterundubbed1993 It didnt and great opening doesnt mean shit, you can have bad opening and that movie will make more eventually than having high opening and fade away within the week
Oprah was a producer so any problems falls on her rightly so.
A lot of people/the general public are tired of remakes, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that the little mermaid and color purple are flops. Far from it
Financially like dee said they are considered flops this is facts based on earnings just because you see a lot of noise surrounding the movie doesn’t mean it’s successful
Being difficult is how negotiate if you are worth anything, if you want wage increase and your boss says no, its time to say Im looking for a new job and will leave asap when I find it
It's not true, there's no beef with the cast and Oprah lol😅😅 why people are like this... Whoppi didn't do promo run because her cameo in the movie was supposed to be a suprise, she is in the film😅 ... the quarrel is actually with Warner Brothers.... this have none to do with Oprah at all!!!
Right why would she be a part of the press run if she is only doing a cameo? That’s stupid. Oprah is only doing the press run because she’s the exec producer
She should have done it differently standing up and calling people out doesn’t do anything but make it difficult for you to get up
Awesome video
Disney knows there’s a market for it and it ain’t small
nicki didn't say nothing about them for like a year now she has 3 grammy noms.
they need to write better movies because we don’t like seeing the same movies 😅
Her team has no negotiating skills 😂🤦🏽♂️
( Not sure if you read these but Dee Shanell continue your great work)
Not shot herself in the foot 🤣🤣
I mean when J law going on those rants forever about only getting paid 10s of million one one really said anything. Why can't henssen call out her pay that seems like its only a couple 100 thousand or 10s of thousand
I think tarahji should have waited to speak out
Fantasia is being Oprah’s lapdog unfortunately.
You choose.
When Monique came out she got played
tbh the color purple is depressing so i avoided that whole thing
💙
do you react to fans music?
Maybe they should stop remaking movies and come up with new ideas. A lot of remakes do flop.
I’m genuinely curious is this a woman thing because I mainly only hear this type of news from them
I mean i think for taraji its about being under paid.
Some Context: Typical Breakdown for a Feature Film:
(1) Pre-Production: (i.e. cast, crew, locations) + (2) Production: (actual filming) + (3) Post-Production: (most $$$ part i.e. editing, sound, etc.) + (4) Promotion: which runs typical 2 to 2.5x the combined the Pre-Production & Production costs. The total budget for the Color Purple was $55.6M - In reality, they likely spend another $50-$125M to promote & release this film. Opening weekend grossed $11.7M, & and of Jan 10 they earned another $4.6M.
Granted the movie may be classified as a "flop" in comparison to Major Feature Films, but in the end, if the musical was motivational , impactful, or resonated with you ~ that's all that matters....
no one wanted to see live action little mermaid imo tbh one if the most boring princess to date
At is 0:31
U mean Lil Kim????
Dee I love u but stop😂
I’m sorry but why did Taraji continue to accept being underpaid all this time? Is she not negotiating her deals?
Im pretty sure she is negotiating. No money and less money is 2 drastic different things
That would've cost her a lot of roles tho because they would've just cast somebody who accepted less without a fuss
She just fired her team before the end of the year 2023 so I’m sure that’s part of it on top of racial and gender bias
🙄🙄
So The Little mermaid and Chloe album flop? I liked them both smh
They should had let a Jew produce this one like the last time
😂😂😂 y’all are something 🤣🤣🤣
But obviously if she’s speaking regardless if us the public can help her or not. Somebody can help her like (50cent) who offered via IG
