Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip your spine out when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉 Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your expression is blue, blue. Your face is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.
that is DEEP! thank you for the summary, u answered all my questions about what was going on in the video! i was thinking they were talking about someone being dead when they sang about the face being blue like the ocean, but i was confused because i really wasn't expecting that! wow!
Well well well...Dreamcatcher would be a strange starting point to get into Kpop given that in terms of music, they kind of unique within the industry (which more diverse than you will know once you start diving in beyond the hype groups) by huge margin and might not be actually a indicator of what "Kpop". As for the song, officially it unravels a story of an obsession and longing for love. One theory is that the capitalise BE in the title is used in context as the Hanja character 悲’ (‘BE’) as they sound alike and the word meaning sadness, and the title BEcause could be loosely translate as the cause of sadness, and paired with the line BEcause I like you or BEcause I love you, the sadness is caused by liking or loving someone. Also, the whole creepy toxic vibe is link to the choreography where there is a scene of someone choking another, and the lyrics about "forever mine, even your breath" and then "your face blue...like an ocean view" kind of reflect someone being strangled until the fact turns blue etc. Also, the MV plot theme has another layer that borrowed quite a bit of plot elements from the horror movie "Us" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers who were forced to live underground depraved of the "finer" things and are trying to are trying to take over their "privileged" above ground counterparts...won't go into much details as it would be better if you watch the movie yourself if you haven't). There are a lot of details in the MV that point to this such as the movie "Us" which has scenes depicting a hall of mirror, someone being captured and replaced, the carnival; similarly the choreography also uses the movie themes such as the doppelgangers holding hand in a chain, the slight side to side head tilts, ending pose of the center member which two hand on her face, mirrored choreography etc.. There are also a few easter eggs for the doppelgangers concept such as the MV is 3:13 minute long (coincidence? I think not) , and that the opening scene and ending scene has the members in completely different outfits (with the ending outfit more whimsical), as well as the completely drain symmetrical hourglass at the end indicating that at some point, the doppelgangers replaced their original counterpart. More impressively, musicality, it plays into the theme of opposite doppelgangers where there is a two part chorus (whimsical and cute, and a more rock follow up) and two part bridge (soft vocals followed up by a deep spoken rap with atmospherically vocals behind) trying to show this mirror duality.
wow!! someone else mentioned the movie “us” but didn’t go into detail, so thank you for that! this video is so complex, it’s amazing to see it executed so well! i’m impressed!
Dreamcatcher are a bit of an anomaly in the kpop industry because they consistently incorporate rock in their music. The song is about an obsessive, psychotic love where they eventually killer their lover to stay by their side for all eternity. It’s really dark, which Dreamcatcher are also known for. And a little bit about kpop itself: Kpop is an industry, not a genre. The songs are influenced by many different styles of music from all corners of the world. It’s not unusual to hear multiple genres in a single song or come across other forms of experimentation. Kpop is a lot of fun for me, and even helped me warm up to genres I wasn’t a fan of before.
i was getting those vibes! is that what they meant when they were talking about the blue face? the person was dead?? wow, super deep. & that makes sense, i was thinking of it as a genre, not a type of music industry, thank you!
@@alwaysSaba Yes, in fact they choked the partner to death, as it's an allusion to the face becoming blue due to suffocating and losing breath. It's also something that you can see in the choreography intro, where Gahyeon is choking JiU.

As others have said Dreamcatcher is fairly unique within K-Pop in that they consistently use edgier genres (like rock, metal) throughout their discography. If that’s not your thing, no worries really, Dreamcatcher also loves to experiment with different genres within their albums (Dystopia: Tree of Language is a testament to that). There’s also so much variety within K-Pop as a whole you’re sure to find something you like. Also, you mentioned how intricate the music video was. K-Pop has a HEAVY focus on the visual aspect of music, like it’s just as, if not more, important than the song itself. The music video, the styling, make up, hair, choreography. So there’s been times for me that while I couldn’t necessarily get into the song, the visuals alone were interesting enough to keep me engaged. BTS is the most popular group out there and while they’ve been doing following the mainstream for a bit, their earlier music has a LOT of hiphop and rnb influence, if you want to check them out as well. I was introduced to K-Pop through them. Thanks for the reaction :)
Kpop incorporated visuals in their music production so its okay if you have hard time reading the subs, you can always appreciated the music and visual first and then look at the lyrics later no need to strees yourself
Thanks for the reaction. Listen to Dreamcatcher's Scream. This song is about hate messages and cyberbullyings. You will know that Dreamcatcher's music is special.
