Ultimate Eurorack Controller? 16 CV outputs with the 16n Faderbank

- The 16n Faderbank is a 16 high quality fader controller that offers 16 direct 0 to 5 volt outputs (one per slider) as well as I2C and a minijack MIDI connectivity with both Korg and Arturia MIDI standards on a switch. Super handy, super playable, good fun, tonnes of potential for control and patching. This is an open source DIY project so you can make your own, or have a friendly DIY builder (I can recommend some) make one for you if you're not in a position to do so. But the designers are looking to get built units made too. Check the link below for information.
This unit is a final prototype rushed through for me for Deershed Festival back in July. I used it with this same basic patch in the video to allow anyone to come and jam with modular and make music quickly. As you can see here - • Building a Eurorack Sy...

this video sold me on the 16n a while back. I finally got one today, and I have to say, it is everything I’d imagined and more. The browser-based editing interface is so great, and it really opens up the monome norns in ways I wouldn’t have anticipated. I’m excited to try using it with norns and my modular setup at the same time!
thank you for doing this video!
no worries.
I hope they put this into the market so we can all easily get one!
This is rather simple. Just some op-amps and some sliders (also 5v).
DITTO!
Sounds simple but I'm a very basic solderer and craftsman :-) And not sure my skills would end up making anything as handsome and effective as this!
Yes, i'm super keen for one too.
Exactly. I could quite happily and slowly do the soldering but as to the building the casing and everything around it I'm not convinced of my skills!
wow, that looks very small and smart!
yep
simple like it! thx for showing
nice one.
Such a bummer I can’t buy one, oh well, I think I probably have way to many controllers anyway. Hahaha Great work Ben!
They're working on it so hopefully not too far off, I haven't checked in with the project for a while.
I love your fader caps! Where did you source them? Thanks!
This and an CV.OCD would be pretty much all i need for my semi-modular gear.
those two would nicely integrate a lot of gear.
Certainly interesting
yeah fun little thing.
Waaaa! This is great. Great visual feedback as the faders are colored, and also faders in eurorack are great to have. Though i'd make a better housing for this, aluminium or something more durable. Can i be a kid? :D
Thanks for the video mate.
advantage over eurorack is that the faders are much longer, also of a higher quality in terms of parts used too. Different enclosures will come as well as these get finalised.
Great !
Really want this to pair w my 301!
it'll connect right to it and was designed for it.
just through the standard CV ins or is there any other protocol used?
These are sold assembled by Michigan Synth Works, if you're not in to the whole DIY scene.
Nice presentation as always on your channel!
As you can control via MIDI CCs I wonder if you could use it also the other way round to convert incoming MIDI CCs to CV with this fader box?
I don't think so on this design. Cool idea though, especially if the sliders became attenuators for the CC automations.
@@DivKid thanks for replying so quickly. Exactly! But no chance. I meanwhile contacted Michigan Synth and they said that due so many DACs to be engaged would multiply the price!
Yeah makes sense
will you do a vid on the F8R?
Does this work with MU format? Will there be a version that allows you to group faders? Being able to change the CV amongst multiple modules simultaneously would be the bomb!
Hi Keith, the voltages should work with MU directly just using 3.5mm to 1/4" cables. In terms of controlling multiple things take one fader output into a multiple and split that out into multiple destinations and attenuate the CV at the destinations to suit. You can have some great wide range "macro" gestures that way.
I could well see this used with all the nano versions of the mutable stuff and their tiny knobs
yeah great idea
Motorised Faders with recall memory that you can modulate between saved settings (like Frames) one can dream.
Der Mann mit der Maschine is ready for your bank account savings!
@@el_dani ha, yea saw that genius,.now I'm hoping he will partner with Intellijel on the Metropolis 3
would love one of these - maybe with a custom loom and breakout panel?
yeah a custom panel would nice. I'd be into that.
Now your talking! Im going to be making three for my keys & bsp's
Would be seriously cool to have an Oled under the channel strips that you can type in what the strips are (Instead of masking tape) - I am dreaming here... BUT, having said that this thing looks proper cool.
I want something like that too. Novation and many others did this before, I think they stopped because it costs too much to add it in a simple controller, so they keep it for higher end devices.
Yeah tape is still my tool of choice on my desk and a fair few other devices for over 40 years ;)
When something works that reliably without power supply etc, why stop.
yeah masking tape or sticky labels would be my thing. Or just practice lots sand learn the interface. This isn't so bad to learn and was what I used at a festival for a few days. It didn't take long to get it all together and remember where everything was comfortably.
As @daniel-anez said : "love your fader caps! Where did you source them? Thanks!"
They came with my 16n, but these are the same rounded style - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232551445892
@@DivKid oh thanks for your answer ;)
@@DivKid
I need this in my life.
I think they're going to do well.
Yeah. This is something eurorack needs for performance. Being able to have various functions in one central location will be much easier than finding a single knob burred in cables.
Take my money!!!!
I can take it for you, but I can't give you one of these back!
Be careful DivKid wants his yacht.
wow, this would be also great with the Assimil8or!
absolutely.
that‘s what I‘m getting it for. And the ER301
Yep my thoughts exactly. Already reached out for one...
Does the USB power also run midi? Hoping to connect this directly to Ableton as well.
Yes
Want one. Cannot solder. Damn.
Am I missing something? The 16n is not yet open source, or is it?
the progress is all on the lines forum which is linked lower down on the main web page. It's not out yet from what I can see. Asking on the forum is probably the best place to keep up with it.
I refuse to even watch this cause I know I’ll be spending more money! 😂
haha
Is there an update on this?
I haven't spoken to anyone about it for a good while so not from me I'm afraid.
Behringrer bcf2000 + Expert Sleepers FH-2
hopefully this'll be a bit cheaper :)
I would love to rack this with the rest of the gear
Anatoles - yeah should be.
Um i want one
:)
Nice if you are a polar bear.
do polar bears like coloured fader tops?
+5😻 +10😿 -5😿 -10😿
huh?
DivKidVideo lol: plus five volts😻 but no plus ten volts😿and no neg five or neg ten volts😿😿
The issue with these types of anything assignable to anything control is it doesn't really feel like an intuitive instrument to me. If you're in the middle of a big patch with a lot going on, there's no way you're going to remember what each one does and move it in an intuitive/instrument like way. Maybe you can resort to some tacky solution, like putting masking tape on the bottom of each one and labeling..but again, to me, it's already not an instrument at this point, the second you have to think about what something does ,then you're more in the realm of equipment and audio engineering. Similarly, I think this is why switches embedded within modules are superior to generalized switches, from a design perspective.
Hi Nick, totally agree that bespoke solutions to bespoke set ups make way more sense. However we're in modular, we have to learn and adapt all the time. This really didn't take long for me to patch up something with all the sliders and comfortably remember and perform with what was going on.
Yes, if that's your aim of the patch..but will you remember when you have 3 other voices going on and 100 other cables across a ton of other modules and want to trigger quick changes? I guess it just becomes more about the controller as the hub, you have to accept it will be the center..this is the same reason I was intrigued by the soundmachines arches but ultimately decided against funding it..too abstract, too many possibilities.
it's a eurorack remote control lol
