The real reason the military and everything else is cut is to give our politicians more money to redistribute to their friends and donors. They have been misusing taxpayer's money on an industrial scale. So instead of this money being saved it has gone! And if that was not bad enough the Tories have borrowed even more money to misuse and this has been added to our national debt which is at an all time high! We need to bring in forensic accountants and follow the money!
"Nations fight wars." Indeed. And the UK, as a nation lacks the capacity to fight one. It lacks the healthy population, economic strength and industrial capacity to fight any significant war. The UK, this century, has seen the return of destitution, malnutrition and poverty on a scale not seen for 100 years. None of that is due to the, undoubted, evils of Russia; not so long ago, friends to our Tory elite. Even if the UK had the capacity to fight a war - the majority of the people would not consent to it for any government such as our current one. And you're not the first person to use the phrase "my generation" as if it were different to the others that came before it. 🙂 Everybody felt something similar and said something similar in generations gone by with advances in technology. Missiles were supposed to replace manned fighter aircraft. Yet here are. Being a drone operator in Ukraine is pretty dangerous. They supplement operators of artillery (which is not more or less dangerous). It's better that people want to volunteer. But the biggest problem with the armed forces is a really poor career structure, poor housing, not great conditions for the family and so on. Not too many people want that lifestyle these days. But when I was younger, the armed forces did offer careers and the possibility to travel that were way more attractive. In peacetime I wouldn't dream of joining the military these days. But forty years ago I did sort of consider it because it was a reasonable alternative to a civilian career. It needs to be that way again to be attractive to people.
But if you join now you might get a choice in what area to go in. There's other cowardly things to do. It sounds rear echelon is your calling. In the rear with the gear.
One among many of the grim scenarios facing Ukraine these days is the prospect of their being more Russian soldiers to shoot at than there are bullets to shoot at them. Someone once said "Quantity has a quality of its own". IMO, it's best to have a high-tech precision strike force AND a deep well of generally skilled reserves to draw from - it's not just an either or.
We would be perfectly secure if America wasn’t destabilising the region by instigating a conflict by using Ukraine as a proxy to push NATO right onto Russias border in violation of the Minsk agreements. This is absolutely the fault of America and it’s allies.
So then do what Russia is doing. Offer citizenship to anyone who will fight for Ukraine. Give them some land and citizenship or the choice to take cash for fighting.
Who wants to be squadie? Remind me which part of "saving the planet" involves blowing up pipelines, killing wildlife, testing nuclear bombs and contaminating the soil we grow our food in. Or is this where we pretend that none of this has any environmental impact? 😮
**It’s simple** The west thought that with technological advancement less manpower would be expended or required when facing a combatant. What the Ukraine conflict has demonstrated is that even with modern technology, large attritional warfare is still as relevant now as it was in the early 20th century. We didn’t see that coming, and it’s just as ruthless (if not more so) than it was a century ago. Drones dropping explosives is entirely new and incredibly unforgiving.
It’s even than that - the west assumed once the Soviet Union fell there were no more near peers that would dare start a fight that could lead to nuclear war and assumed its military dominance was assured. They got to used to fighting insurgents hiding in caves.
Relying on hi tech also potentially increases training time. Compare that with the Battle of Britain where pilots rather than planes were the problem. That is likely to be a longer lag now.
it never was about numbers, most of the many battles we fought we were outnumbered many times, it isnt and never will be about numbers its what u do with the numbers u have, as inteligence is our number 1 asset, we know what the enemy is about to do before they do, priceless
Granted, Western militaries need to be less complacent and up their game; however, it is obvious that Russia is also having pretty severe issues with their own military capabilities and is not the immediate threat that some media sources suggest.

American here. I am definitely not a trump supporter for many reasons. I want to see us support Ukraine the way I know we could. I want us to stay in NATO and absolutely expect we would honor article 5. We ourselves have been supported after 911. It is encouraging to hear Europe stepping up and NATO strengthening (minus Orban and Slovakia). Much like that should deter Russia, I hope it also takes the wind out of the sails for trump IF he isn’t locked up and actually wins. Trying.
Gen. Chapman seems to forget one very pertinent point, that is that Russia has no intention of ever invading any part of the UK. So any increase in infantry numbers is necessary for foreign adventures where the UK can please its US masters. An interesting point about this sudden call to arms via conscription is that, if implemented, it will definitely reduce the level of migrant boats crossing the Channel, and also start a rush to the door by illegal immigrants in the country at present. You could also have a return to former times in the justice system where young men appearing before a judge on somewhat minor charges were given the option 'prison or join the Army'.
I think that the Ukraine war shows that, unfortunately, you do. Even if you don't resort to Russias utterly immoral meat attacks, you need infantry and other arms. Canon fodder? Drone and Canon fodder is a more apt description.
Falkland Islands and numerous other UK lands fall outside the protection of NATO. Argentina still claims the Falkland Islands as Argentine land and that's not going to change anytime soon. As NATO is pretty much dead without the USA, who is upset that other nations aren't pulling their fair shares.
Thats written on paper as many things but NATO broke many of those and after Brexit i m not sure europe would help us (they would say they will like germany giving us 6 broken tanks)
And what happens if NATO falls apart if Trump pull USA out, we don't have the resources to defend ourselves and it can't be turned around quickly as in past days , you need mass to survive a modern conflict on scale of Ukraine, we may not have any say in the matter someday on the next few decades and have to fight with out a functioning NATO to protect us
I hope my country USA leaves NATO. We should not protect Europe from Russia when the Europeans (except UK) refuse to help USA in the Red Sea. Only country helping USA is the UK, so we Americans should ditch NATO and let Europe handle Russia without our help.
US have the National Guard. We call them the weekend soldiers. They are mostly former active service members but only gets paid when activated or train. They have their regular civilian jobs but when needed they get deployed. Companies cannot fire them when they serve.
Yeah, in the UK we have the Army Reserve, the aim is to have 30,000 reservists (we also have the Royal Naval Reserve, The Royal Marines Reserve, and the Royal Auxiliary Air Force). They are not quite the same as the US National Guard though, as with the exeption of Northern Ireland, they aren't deployed in the UK as a military force, although they might be used to engineering, logistics or humanitarian help in a disaster. As Hurricane Katrina showed, The National Guard did all of those things & more. Some units were drafted in to supplement the Police forces however & soldiers are not trained for that.
Conscription wont ever happen here in Britain, especially asking new recruits to fight the Russians as they already know of the thousands of lads KIA, mummy won't let them go, the other reason it won't work is the decline of our indigenous race us Brits have, foreigners who may have British passports won't feel its their duty to fight.
I don't think it's wise to mock the younger generations disdain or suggesting that it is down to social media, as if the older generations haven't also come to share that disdain. It is easy for one who can never be called upon to fight to say that they would if the opportunity presented itself.
ALL POLITICAL PARTIES ARE RESPONSIBLE!!! every party has reduced armed forces sizes during their terms in office since WW2, every time the excuse was they will be smaller but more capable, well guess what that was the wrong answer! What was needed was armed forces not being reduced and their capabilities enhanced to stand a chance on todays battlefields.
Give Ukraine what it needs and Europe doesn’t even need to worry about this question. Let’s stop pretending they need to conserve arms for any other threat.
As if Ukraine hasn’t had enough assistance, no amount of assistance will be enough to successfully defeat Russia. Ukraine does not have any able bodied men left to fight tbh…
Its never been about having enough men, its about not having enough weapon because of NATO especially the US holding back and not giving them the weapons on time as they said they would. The US is sitting on a 1,000 ATACMS due to go out of commission and won't send them to Ukraine. America's General Ben Hodges, said the ATACMS missiles earmarked for disposal could potentially last for several more years. He indicated that the decision to destroy these missiles at a "significant" expense to American taxpayers rather than send them to Ukraine seems politically motivated and has little to do with safety considerations. Biden has a lot to answer for pretending to support Ukraine and expecting Ukraine to defeat Russia with one hand tied behind its back. Worse still are the people who don't want to fund or give weapons to Ukraine they rather let them get slaughtered and eradicated by Russia @@leerichardson3904

Politicians and leading figures have repeatedly said diversity is our strength. Maybe this is what they meant all the time and all the recent immigration will go and fight for our country.
True. When Britain found itself under Australian command in the Japanese Occupation and the Korean War it got a real lesson about its position in global power after WWII.

Well the government has outsourced & privatised everything else, Perhaps they should outsource defence to G4S & defence logistics to DHL. Maybe Easyjet or Ryanair could provide air support. Not sure about the Navy though.
The last justifiable joint-service war our country was involved in was the Falklands. Since then almost all military action has been in following the US on what ever twisted logic and reasoning that is American foreign policy. Our politicians have squandered the faith and integrity and cohesiveness of our people since then. As a result of the lack of integrity leadership and statesmanship the majority of our nation under 30 have stopped believing. This is the biggest threat and one Putin and China are well aware of. This coupled with the diminishing ability in the engineering and manufacturing sectors, where basic manual skill base has dissipated. We would be a walk-over, sad to say we would rely on our nuclear deterrent if threatened by mass invasion and what a moral dilemma that would be!
I've no doubt either. But they need the training and arms to be manufactured three years before that. Which means... you know... kicking that off round about now. 🙂
The reason we belong to NATO is so that if one member of the alliance is attacked, others will help to repel the attacker. This means no country has to waste money on equipment that can become outdated. As has been demonstrated in Ukraine, Russia has an ill trained and badly organised army with poor quality equipment. All Russia needs to understand is that if they attack any one country in the alliance they will be taking on NATO.
I think it irresponsible to discuss this in the media. If you were the enemy would you attack later when your enemy has gained numbers or attack when you know the enemy has not got enough manpower.
Uh, Finland (which is a small but advanced force) could easily stop Russia at this point in time. However, 🇬🇧 desperately needs to increase its defense budget. America is no longer a reliable ally sadly and their assistance should never have been taken advantage of so much by Europe (the 🇬🇧 was much better in this area. It’s Western Europe that really abused the US largesse). What’s silly though, is that if the West simply gave Ukraine what it needed, they wouldn’t even need to worry about this question.
Only reason the US start wars is purely from a self interest financial standpoint point to fuel the military industrial complex. They are not interested in peace keeping or from a humanitarian aspect, you would really be foolish to think such thoughts…
Well the surveys show that Britons are too lazy to fight and the current government has deemed only a pittance of support. Being too cheap and too lazy in this situation is a recipe for disaster. Hopefully Europe can course correct in time.
Of course gen z wouldn't want to sign up for short-term military service: it would mean getting off their bloody phones, getting out of bed, and showing up someplace on time. It would also mean thinking of someone and something other than themselves - oh the horror!
Who raised them to believe there’s no such thing as society, there are only individual men and women and their smartphones? It was the Iron Lady and her pal Ronald, who wanted to make America great again!
Britain and all NATO - even the US in certain ways - must re-arm _starting immediately_ or face an impossible-to-measure risk of catastrophic war defeat. Rather a lot of people disdain the idea intensely under the curiously mistaken belief that being well-armed raises the risk of war. But it doesn't. It lowers it.
Years ago when I joined up it was called the 'Citizen Military Forces' abrev: CMF which later became the Aus Army Reseve, a much better name and reconfigured to be more integrated with 'regs', regular forces. Yours was the 'Territorials' from my memory; are they still extant?
If the main force of our 73000 were wiped out or bogged down in the first few days/weeks of conflict, such that a draft is required, who will be left to train the the new recruits? When you lower numbers too far, the force becomes unviable as the Luftwaffe found in WW2.
It wouldn't matter, with all of the cuts to education over the past 50 years, many wouldn't be educated enough to serve in the modern army. With poverty increasing over the past 25 years, causing malnutrition & illnesses caused by damp housing, many wouldn't be physically fit enough to serve. Your Luftwaffe example is interesting. It wasn't that the Luftwaffe had too few personnel to fight, they just had too few to fight on the multiple fronts that they were expected to. An army of 73,000 well trained, well equipped troops, is more than adequate to protect the United Kingdom & it's remaining colonies. It is enough, when combined with our NATO allies, to see off any threat to NATO countries. It isn't enough however to send troops all over the world for campaigns designed to make whatever PM is in power at the time, to look like a modern Churchill.
Westminster did this 40 years of cuts vote them all out as regards fighting for Britain we are no different to those from ww1 or ww2 threaten us or this island get a answer coming
It's seems Russia could sacrifice their 4.6 millions mens into killed zone still going for more despite heavy losses. That's not a normal human thinking for Russia to take that unwise actions this is sad.
Our children are surreptitiously being trained to become skilled drone controllers by constantly being fed computer games. Alternatively, why not expand our Sea, Army and Air Cadet Units to train our kids to defend UK, as was done well into the 60s after WWII? Not only would we have a larger number of the population with basic training ready for war but also a general increased fitness, resulting in a lesser drain on the NHS. I know preparation for war is considered "unethical" these days. However, war is unfortunately, a fact of life. If we are unprepared for it when it comes, we will be overwhelmed by those with only a desire for power and certainly, no ethics at all. If that happens, despite the words of the song, Britain will become slaves.

If Britain wanted a long lasting peace then they should not of promised Ukraine N.A.T.O. membership and let President Zelensky ramble on about nuclear weapons.
You need a twin track approach - 1) an industry and prof forces with the high tech stuff and 2) capacity with lots of lower tech but impactful kit and numbers at the ready. Item 2 doesn't really exist and needs to be put together quickly .
While it is true that the UK cant take on Russia and the armed forces are at ridiculously low levels of manpower and equipment, the British armed forces haven't been large enough to take on Russia since just before the drawdown after WW2, since then we have always needed our partners in NATO to even think about any sort of war in Europe. The Armed Forces need to be expanded in manpower and equipment to an initial minimum of equal to their size in 1990 then expanded further from there. Trouble is it will never happen, not the political will, and apparently not the public will anymore to protect the country.
General Sanders, who I have the utmost respect for, is in that twilight period of his tenure when senior Military Chiefs are able to talk truth and reality, as they are about to leave their posts. Prior to this, they are treated as toadies by their political masters, always in the firing line to be sacked for not giving the politicians what they want to hear. So, best listen to his advice, o sacred political leaders …..he’s probably on the money…
The idea of a Civilian Army is arguably one of the strongest ideas that has the possibility to fix some of these issues, but seems completely unworkable at this moment in time, especially given the very broken political system and many other problems we currently have. With that being said that may not be the case in the future. I think if the Military has some way to try and pilot the idea to try and start considering some of the logistics & problems involved this is potentially a good move.
In other countries they have (or have had) the option of doing national service in the military or civilian branches. Sometimes (even in the civilian version) people did their service overseas. I had a French friend, for example, that did his national service as a civilian in Poland.
The military do not want a civilian army. They want a professional well equipped army. The well equipped part has sometimes been lacking. If a civilian army was foisted on them, it would be about as effective as Putin's army in Ukraine, unwilling part-trained, poorly equipped reluctant troops not really fighting, just trying to stay alive.
@@skasteve6528 The military want both, in actual fact. As Gen Patrick Sanders pointed out, professional armies start major conflicts but civilian armies win them. Both world wars were won with civilian armies. Ukraine is currently fighting with both a professional and civilian army, virtually all of it being very highly motivated volunteers. They're fighting for their families. Which makes them significantly more motivated than any British professional army soldier for the last 78 years, don't you think? 🙂 They are not talking about conscription.

Chip Chapman as always is spot on with his comments. Unfortunately the youth of today are not used to making sacrifices that the forefathers were faced with. In reality a two year mandatory period of national service would improve the lives and wellbeing of so many. Learning teamwork, trust and empathy for others is a mantra for their future lives. Trouble is the thugs and tough guys will hide behind mam as always.

Conscription isn't a good option ethically it's wrong to force people into dangerous situations where they could be killed or injured. If gen z and millennial are not the type to join I think many would be fine being prosecuted than fight for ethical reasons or out of fear of war there isn't a strong sense of nationalism in this age group either so the government can't just throw the patriotic posters and messages at them and get the same level of compliance. Really they need to make the army more appealing in terms of pay like 40k or 50k a year telling an 18 year old they could be making that money in 5 year would get them thinking or why not let soldiers retire 10 years before everyone else and get a really good pension. Provide financial security to families in event of death people would like to keep family secure financially. Highlight other jobs in army from cyber security engineering medical roles. Also let people have tatoos beards and long hair these are pointless rules that can turn people off joining especially if they are attached to these physical features. Also find ways to improve populations health so more applicants are fit for the army. Maybe go into schools and universities and pitch army to them. Conscription is the easy way out of admitting incompetence claiming there was no other way a truly functioning government wouldn't need to Conscription as they'd have built and maintained a good defence sector

Agreed. There's nothing worse than complacency when it comes to European security. It'll be too late by that point

Remind me which part of "saving the planet" involves blowing up pipelines, killing wildlife, testing nuclear bombs and contaminating the soil we grow our food in. Or is this where we pretend that none of this has any environmental impact? 😮
**It’s simple**
The west thought that with technological advancement less manpower would be expended or required when facing a combatant.
Ukraine doesn’t have nuclear weapons, Britain does. There’s no way that Russia will attack Britain if it means mutual incineration.
Relying on hi tech also potentially increases training time. Compare that with the Battle of Britain where pilots rather than planes were the problem. That is likely to be a longer lag now.

British people will not fight for this country. We lost this country to progressive nonsense.
Gave it up through cowardice is more like it. Cowardice in the face of being called pathetic names by invading foreigners since 1948.
With modern day warfare, you don’t need Canon fodder!
You do to depopulate the world of white males
I think that the Ukraine war shows that, unfortunately, you do.
Even if you don't resort to Russias utterly immoral meat attacks, you need infantry and other arms.
Canon fodder? Drone and Canon fodder is a more apt description.
the kings own canon fodder
Russian vs Ukraine is a conventional war, Russia vs NATO would most likely be nuclear so a large army would be utterly pointless.
It’s cannon! Canon is a make of camera!!!
This is total BS. We fight as NATO, not alone.
Falkland Islands and numerous other UK lands fall outside the protection of NATO. Argentina still claims the Falkland Islands as Argentine land and that's not going to change anytime soon.
As NATO is pretty much dead without the USA, who is upset that other nations aren't pulling their fair shares.
One would hope so - Europe might want to start acting like it.
Thats written on paper as many things but NATO broke many of those and after Brexit i m not sure europe would help us (they would say they will like germany giving us 6 broken tanks)
@@drogonmax8781 any war will be in eastern Europe not on UK beaches Europe would have to fight
Thank you for leading a very sensible, measured piece.
US have the National Guard. We call them the weekend soldiers. They are mostly former active service members but only gets paid when activated or train. They have their regular civilian jobs but when needed they get deployed. Companies cannot fire them when they serve.
I like the national guard model.
Same in the UK. In the UK it's called the Territorial Army (or TA, for short).

Exactly right
Of you go I hope your conscripted
Its never been about having enough men, its about not having enough weapon because of NATO especially the US holding back and not giving them the weapons on time as they said they would. The US is sitting on a 1,000 ATACMS due to go out of commission and won't send them to Ukraine. America's General Ben Hodges, said the ATACMS missiles earmarked for disposal could potentially last for several more years. He indicated that the decision to destroy these missiles at a "significant" expense to American taxpayers rather than send them to Ukraine seems politically motivated and has little to do with safety considerations.

The reason we belong to NATO is so that if one member of the alliance is attacked, others will help to repel the attacker. This means no country has to waste money on equipment that can become outdated.
As has been demonstrated in Ukraine, Russia has an ill trained and badly organised army with poor quality equipment. All Russia needs to understand is that if they attack any one country in the alliance they will be taking on NATO.
if all NATO members take that stance, you have nothing
Trump will tell Europe some hard truths come November.
Trump is Putins useful idiot.
I think it irresponsible to discuss this in the media. If you were the enemy would you attack later when your enemy has gained numbers or attack when you know the enemy has not got enough manpower.
It’s naive in the extreme to think that Britains enemies don’t know exactly what is going on.

Yeah, there are about 30,000 army reservists, I'm not sure how many RN & RAF reservists there are.
He thinks people will fight over the loss of internet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It isn't enough however to send troops all over the world for campaigns designed to make whatever PM is in power at the time, to look like a modern Churchill.
the size of UK force is out of sync with the ambition to influence things too..
Westminster did this 40 years of cuts vote them all out as regards fighting for Britain we are no different to those from ww1 or ww2 threaten us or this island get a answer coming

Significantly Russia's military might has destroyed more equipment/weapons in last 12 months than what Hitler's Axis forces lost in 1944-1945.
Which rusha claims to have done all by itself ….
