Err - the biggest travel hack noone seems to do - when you are traveling either to tour sites for the day, or comuting from an airport/train station/whatever to your hotel - PRE LOAD A GOOGLE MAP with the directions, or at least the surrounding area. That way, even with no data connection (no 4g, or wifi) your GPS will tell you where you are and help you nqavigate the area like you grew up there.
This is also really helpful when you want to just "get lost" in any area and mindlessly explore... As long as you have a clearly pre loaded google map and a blue dot, you just cannot get lost. It's absolutely necessary for an easy trip IMO.

Oda Man tried it for the first time this summer, in London. Works great! It's a great way to walk around without getting totally lost, especially if there's no one around who can help. Great backup!

You can put extra clothes in a pillowcase ( if you bought too much while travelling ;D ) and take it with you on the plane as your "pillow", it won't count as luggage, and you don't have to carry an extra pillow!

One good tip - pack your bag fully, at least a day before. Then stand it upright - let it stay like that. Then the night before - open it in that position - you may notice that it has compacted and now there's room there that wasn't there before.

These hacks have indeed worked for me- but with a couple of backfires to share: 1. My attempt to wear my bulky clothes in order to save room in luggage (for a transpacific flight) occurred...during the summer. As a perspiring tourist in thick, layered clothing, standing among others in light summer wear, I become noticeable to the TSA who promptly pulled me aside, forced me to disrobe, and brushed down every item in my suitcase. 2. An order for a vegetarian meal once netted me a hearty dish of lettuce, a slice of lemon (to squeeze, for flavoring), and a cup of water. As other passengers chowed down on Dagwood sandwiches, I knew that the sly airline (to remain unnamed) had thought out front in order to stop this trend of newly converted vegetarians. I now prepare meals in Tupperware-like boxes, low on moisture, of course. Otherwise, these hacks really do save grief. Thank you for sharing them.

one trick someone told me in Rome was if your going to the Coliseum if you dont have access to the internet to buy a ticket go to the Forum cause it never has a line, spend a extra 1 euro and get a multi ticket so than you have a ticket if you wanna go to the Forum and than you can just walk straight into the coliseum!

I have somewhat wavy and annoyingly course hair, so I have a ton of those "lobster claw" hair clips. Those things make wonderful cord control devices! I will roll up my cord, clip the lobster claw on it and it is easy to stash in one of the small pockets in my travel carry on/purse, and I have extra hair clips.

The travel hack that I recently learned and have used a few times is to bring an empty water bottle through security and fill it up on the other side to take on the plane. That way you have water without having to buy it at the airport. I'm sure a lot of people already do this.

    • @closequartersmillerstyle6782

I do this too- then I don't have to buy a $7 airport water, and i don't have the added weight of the water itself. Bonus, in Rome you can fill up those water bottles in the fountains.

I travel with a few plastic coat & skirt hangars, and a ziploc bag of powdered laundry soap (yeah, I know you can use the hotel's shampoo). Clothes can be washed with you in the shower. Then use your damp towel to roll up the wet clothes. Use the hangars for drying clothes in the shower overnight. Hotels & cruise ships often don't have enough hangars and they don't work outside the closet. Then leave the hangars & soap before flying home. Extra room in the suitcase.

For both adding space to the suitcase when returning and for keeping the suitcase from getting funky from used clothes, I always pack one of those space saver vacuum storage bags with a hand vacuum pump. The bags are supposed to hold a vacuum, so they don't let the smell out, and if you pump enough (I like to place the bag inside the suitcase to pump, so the thing conforms to the size and shape of the suitcase), it occupies much less volume.

Put vodka in a small spray bottle (the cheaper the better, vodka, not spray bottle) and spritz smelly areas on clothes will remove smell and bacteria, and will dissipate. Good on dry clean or clothes that can't be washed. And if your trip sux, then drink the vodka.. happy travels.

Great hacks. Thought of another one - use the vacuum bags to pack your clothes and get more in. Or just use them when leaving (ask one of the hotel cleaners to suck the air out and give her a nice tip), then you'll have room for souvenirs. (Always come back with too much and struggle to shut the case).

When I went to europe I packed my rattiest shirts and underwear which I was about to give away anyway, and then I just left them behind as I went. My suitcase kept getting lighter. On domestic trips I take an empty trash bag to keep my dirty clothes separate. Anything that can spill or leak should be put into a ziploc bag to avoid soiling your clean clothing.

Sam Mcwindy I'm not sure I understand your complaint. He said he only does that with old clothing that needs to be gotten rid of anyway. It's not like he's throwing out perfectly good clothes he bought just before the trip. I could see this being a less useful strategy for regular travelers, but for the infrequent traveler it could work. Also it's not like he's suggesting ditching old underwear on the side of the road, obviously people should properly dispose of old clothing. If they can find charities (à la Goodwill) at their destination, all the better, though I doubt anyone has a good use for old underwear, other than for cleaning the floor or bathroom (after bleaching it first).

Thanks for these tips/ reminders. It's so easy to forget the preparation like notifying the bank and having a copy of passports. I find your tips videos useful and have a lot of common sense (especially the one your wife presented about women's safety).
I've read that when filling bottles, leave about 25% space for expansion and also wrap it in cling-film (another barrier against leaks). Don't know how true the expansion part is, but so far I've not had any popped bottles. And also bring toiletries that have multiple uses e.g. Vaseline.

If you are flying a foreign airline go to their website in that country and purchase the tickets in their currency. You will need to have a credit card that don't charge foreign transaction fees. This works very well if you are traveling to countries that have a lower standard of living then yours. Sometime the ticket prices are much less. The airlines are starting to catch on to this and some now check your IP address so then you would need a VPN. If you are visiting someone in that country call them up and have them purchase the tickets for you with your credit card.
Another trick is if you are using points to fly use them for one way travel and then purchase the tickets back to the U.S. once you get there. This helps if you are traveling with a family and you don't have enough points for everyone to be on the same plane and it becomes too expensive to get your whole family on one flight. Sorry if that's hard to understand just think outside the box and realize that if you live in the U.S. because of lack of choices you now pay a premium for overseas airfare.

I have learned to save all your old underwear, socks, t-shirts, etc and wear them and then pitch them as you go. In addition, I will wear old (but comfortable) clothes on those long overseas flights and pitch them also upon arrival. Bonus, you can an always wear your new (and comfortable) clothes that you purchased overseas on the return flight!

Another trick to the Louvre is an underground entrance. A hotel worker gave me that trick. Talk to the front desk staff. They can be very helpful. That is a great idea about emailing yourself PDF files and keeping them on your phone. I am going to use that one; thanks.

Air Fare Hack - If you are doing a multi-city and have some flex, check the fare in reverse order. Last summer I looked up flights arriving in Budapest and departing Vienna. I was pleased with the fare but then checked a VIE arrival with BUD departure. The latter was significantly cheaper! My hotel rates changed but I still netted a huge savings.

Get a ScotteVest. It has 44 pockets and holds just about everything, including a full size ipad. It has RFID blockage for your passport and credit cards. I plan on wearing one to go to France so I don't have to carry a day bag. Great for keeping the pickpockets away. They are pricey, depending on which model you get, but they seem really durable and well made. I wore it to Tahoe and I just took off the vest with everything on it and put it on the Xray machine. Super easy!

Diana Winkler ScotteVest are the best! I agree that they keep the pick pockets away because in mine each pocket closes and then I zip up the front and everything is secure. Oh and talk about going through security like it's nothing! Wow! I stepped up put my ScotteVest and loafers in the bin and walked through, done! I recommend them to everyone

here is a good idea, use baskets for items you want to pack and label it. oh and when using 3.oz bottles test it out first see what you can live without. keep the baskets next to the bag(s) your packing. and only put those items in your suitcase/bag(s). I pack accordingly to the weather, what I will be doing etc. my sis gave me a great tip pick the shoes first the outfit(s) will come together much easier. and added bonus you can pair one pair of shoes with a few outfits. (if you pick the shoes first).

Great videos and very informative. Thank you.
In this video, I noticed a man in the background wearing a black jacket, black hoodie, and tan pants. He appeared to be observing the other people around him instead of enjoying the scenery.
At time stamp 2:45 it appeared that “something or someone “ had caught his attention and he hurriedly walked off frame. It should be noted that he is not carrying any luggage or baggage at this time.
At time stamp 4:47 he returns back into frame, however , this time he is carrying a “black bag” with his right hand.
He walks very quickly from the left of the screen and exits to the right. It appears that his was attempting to conceal the bag.
The individual is not seen again.
I might be mistaken but I believe you may have accidentally recorded a possible theft.
Thanks again for all the videos. They have been very helpful.

I recently got myself a universal adaptor, so it has pins for UK Canada and USA power outlet configurations. For my flight to America I've requested a vegan meal since I'm vegan anyway. Just hope I get it, because someone mentioned that they sometimes don't end up doing it. I plan to take snacks and stuff anyway since I have somewhere between a 7 and 9 hour flight. I also had someone type up the details for my coach card and going to do the same for at least 1 of my passports.

#6 (credit card alerts) - I ran into this domestically. I flew from Alaska to Virginia with a stop in Colorado, and I also had a charge hit from a popular online retailer in California, so in the span of ten hours my card had been used in four states. The credit card company got nervous and shut me down, but of course they didn't call to notify me, so I found out when I tried to pay for dinner. It didn't take a long time to resolve, but it was quite inconvenient and embarrassing.

I find having a compass can be a lifesaver sometimes. European streets are not a grid, usually, and if you come up from the metro station it is easy to get disoriented. A good, detailed map is valuable but you need to know which way is north too, and keep in mind the approximate magnetic declination for the area. Another thing is to have a small flashlight to examine the map. I got a little lost after dark once walking around Rome. I had a compass but it was often so dark it was hard to make out the details in the map.

I used to fly for work a lot, something I learned is that you can TOATLLY ask for the whole can! Saves them time from having to refill your cup more often, and you don't have to wait for refills! They often asked if I still I wanted a cup as ice, and have never hesitated about it, so as far as I can tell, there's no rule saying they can't do this. At least from SW, American, and United

Although, I'm not too sure of ordering the vegetarian option-- I just returned from a long-haul flight on which I ordered the veg option, and found that it was full of beans. That didn't seem like a good idea on such a long flight, so I pushed those suckers off my plate and ate the rest of my meal. :)

Nowadays, a Cloud service might work as good as your email, but I still email it. Since I lost a camera on the train, I also make sure the first photo in there has my name, email and phone number. If a good soul finds it, I'll get it back, and if the person is dishonest, I would have lost it anyway.

I know Im really late posting. But going over a ton of videos in preparation. For phone cord I use a cord that has USB A and C on one end and then has 4 outputs each one differnt. Thus I can charge from anything to anything. For added luggage I only take a carry on and know if I keep just what I took it fits. I then pack a folded up duffel bag in said carry on. So on return I can fill duffel bag and check it. Or if wife is taking a checked bag Ill take biggest checked bag allowed and then put the size smaller case inside it. Upon return you have 2 checked suitcases.

Phone charger cords are stupid cheap these days, and you can buy them in bulk. I have chargers that stay at home, a tech bag for the hotel/air bnb/hostel, and another pouch with cords for walking around during the day with my portable charger (and for on the plane). That way everything is ready to go, and I don’t forget anything, but if I do, there are backups.
