  • Resident Evil 4 (2023)
    - Professional: the highest difficulty in the game.
    - New Game: fresh new game
    - No extra content/DLC items
    - Pistols/Knives Only ("Minimalist" trophy).
    - No Damage: no damage will be taken. You will see on every chapter "Times Damaged: 0" as statistic. There are many interactions that do not deal damage. I also prevented Ashley from getting hit even though it technically doesn't count as damage for the game.
    - No accessories for Leon/Ashley.
    - S+ rank : the game is completed under 5h 30min with 15 saves.
    - PC version, 60 FPS, played with controller.
    - Segmented: this run was done in one save per chapter (15 in total for S+ requirements), except for chapters 2 and 3, which were done in a single segment and chapter 14 I made an extra save before Krauser boss fight for my convenience.

    Some thoughts/findings after trying this challenge:
    - It's shocking how effective the pistols/knives can be in terms of damage when you fully upgrade them. In terms of DPS, you're still able to get through every damage based section pretty easily.
    - A common problem of pistol/knife only is with situations you can't prevent "desnucados" (broken neck mutations). With a sniper rifle / shotgun, you can consistently prevent these mutations (not for the regular plagas, just for the broken necks) with well placed headshots, but with pistols/knife the only way would be to get a knife execution (or a lucky critical headshot) except that in several encounters you can't do it from far away.
    - Some of the sections that can be skipped like the goat head encounter and the wrecking ball are actually not that bad without the "skips" (as long as you have good firepower). I do like how you can be strategic with the enemies you kill in the wrecking ball to prevent a wave of spider plagas and the whole section is easily controlled.
    - Managing ammunition in this challenge is a bit frustrating because you'll often get to a point where the item points (DA system for item drops) are high enough and you'll be just getting money drops until you lower it again so the game will prevent you from stocking ammunition, not rewarding the player for saving ammo. I need to make a separate video just showcasing how bad this system is in the context of survival horror and it is a very artificial way of generating this sense of "I barely have enough ammo". The drop rate for small resources is also bad, it can be tilting how you seem to get drops for everything but what you actually need. Overall the ammo situation is not that bad but it's frustrating how you can't build a more comfortable ammo count by being strategic with saving ammo.
    - Saddler's fight is actually pretty consistent in this run and it showcases the normal way of fighting him with his full design. More on that below.
    Distinct encounters for this challenge:
    - Village siege (0:04:02) - while it may look cool in this recording, this is VERY random with no grenades, although you can just run around and time out the sequence. This encounter would potentially be fun if there weren't so many grabbers at once and you'd be able to actually perform parries more freely, play more aggressively, etc.
    - Dynamite valley (0:17:40) - a little slower because of no grenade.
    - Cabin (1:11:36) - no grenades/flashbangs, you are forced to deal with some potential "desnucados".
    - Maze (2:11:48) - this part can be a little random without grenades, requires some good aiming.
    - Knights (2:20:20) - no flashbangs but this part still works really well with the stuns and parry. This might be one of my favorite encounters in the game.
    - Goat Head encounter (2:15:50) - this encounter is surprisingly not that bad without the skip if you kill the red zealot quickly. On a side note, I should have used the lamp on the top floor to kill a lot of the enemies. Not using the skip makes the escape from that room after you pick up the Goat Head simple and you don't have to deal with Ashley AI's nonsense.
    - Double Garradors room (2:40:45) - this encounter is bad but you can make use of stealth to weaken/kill one of the Garradors. It's ridiculous how many knives it takes to kill a single Garrador even when you fully upgrade the damage and the durability for the combat knife. It's already weird how stealth works against them, why not reward the player for taking the risk of going for a stealth attack?
    - Mines (2:59:12) - I chose to kill all here in a fun way combining stealth with combat, although it's totally unnecessary.
    - Double El Gigante (3:06:56) - I'm not sure if you are allowed to use the trap to kill them.
    - Salazar (3:32:11) - it's terrible as usual if you're not using the golden eggs, not much to say. The knife is pretty good at stunning him though, but it doesn't redeem the fight in any way. The fight would have been not too bad if not for the unnecessary random acid bombs being placed silently in the middle of attacks.
    - Regenerators (3:54:16) - Regenerators are really not good for this challenge, shooting their legs is not very comfortable. It's only cool in the encounter you kill the wrench regenerator (it made me appreciate how you have to make a distinction between plagas placed at his frontal area or on his back). The fully upgraded Punisher makes a good difference here. For the plagas at its back you can easily dispatch with knifing while they're crawling. The fully upgraded knife is actually pretty good at killing them by HP as well (without needing to kill all the plagas).
    - Wrecking Ball (4:10:47) - This encounter has a very weird scripting (it presents itself as a timed sequence but you actually have to kill enemies for Ashley to be able to destroy the wall which makes no sense) but once you're aware of it, it can be fun to fight enemies here. Using knife execution and red barrels strategically against specific enemies that can mutate makes this section pretty easy to manage. Being smart with who you kill also allows you to prevent waves of enemies, I do appreciate that.
    - Turret in Mike's section (4:33:14) - not much to say here except that it just makes this section extra tedious.
    - Saddler (5:01:36) - Saddler's boss fight is actually a lot better than I was anticipating and pretty consistent for this run. For the first phase, when he has two eyeballs (before the novistadors summoning), you are supposed to fight him at close range at any part of the arena reacting to his moves and shooting the eyeballs when he's recovering after a few specific attacks. Then we have the big wave of novistadors he summons which has one good design and is actually pretty easy to deal with: they always come to the same spots at the same timings (notice how they reposition themselves to very specific spots before they actually start moving - try to shoot only after they fully reposition so they will be moving slowly), so if you're aware of them and memorize most of them, you can dispatch all of them before Saddler comes back and jump to your platform. Saddler is immune to eyeball stuns in some of the frames when he's doing that move or the triple acid attack there so don't even bother trying to stop it. It's possible to prevent the summoning without flashbangs by shooting a red barrel as he's about to jump to the platform too. In his final phase (post novistadors summoning), he now has four eyeballs and gains access to a charge move where he can do at close range so you can no longer use the same method as phase 1 (this only happens if he successfully completes the summoning). The idea is that you're supposed to move to the one part of the arena that is actually wide for that phase. This charge move is very easy to deal with in that part of the arena (you just move to the side) and it only exists to give you an appropriate way of dispatching the two eyeballs at his back which are significantly weaker than the frontal eyeballs. He will do this attack quite often. The fully upgraded fighting knife will deal insane amount of damage so the fight will only last for about 4 cycles, with each of them having some unique aspects to it: the first one you're dealing with the scripted novistadors spawn, the second one where he will end up jumping to the platform, the third one where you make use of the red barrel and make your way to the final open area, the fourth one where you deal with his triple acid move when he jumps to the central platform again and finish him off in the open area. The Matilda is incredibly effective at dealing with Saddler's eyeballs in a similar manner to the CQBR. In this recording, the fight ended a little too early so I barely showcase how to deal with him in the open area.

      I mean its lore accurate and sense of urgency. Fast pace instead of playing it safe. Can you do that challenge? I saw a waterhall strat from a japanese dude I cant see the video again. Its one of the fastest I saw.

    Incredible run.
    I see you crafting a lot of pistol ammo, when you already have some. Doesn't the games hidden variable difficulty drop less pistol ammo for you when it knows you have a lot of it? Wouldn't it be better to stay on the lower side?

    Great run man, 1 question. Can you manipulate gunpowder drop rate other than equiping the gunpowder case? Sometimes all I get are ptas and other times I get a lot of gunpowder, I was just wondering if there's something that you could do that changes the drop rate

      If you’re low on gunpowder, you’re more likely to get more of it. However the major factor is the “item points” which is an internal variable related to the difficulty adjustment. Once it gets high enough, you’ll mostly just get money drops. For this run in particular, gunpowder is not an issue but rather small resources which are so hard to come by after the village.

      I believe this the first time I saw Krauser being killed only with a knife. Mostley it is a combination with a magnum or a fully upgraded gun. Your timing must be perfect. (and/or you know his moves very well)@@Aether2125

    2:40:32 is killing those 3 zealots at first make the rest of them disappear later? Cuz when i tried this many zealots kept spawning and throwing axes on me while stealth on those garadorrs

      There are 5 of them at the beginning. I kill 3 of them quickly and sneak by the left side so the two remaining will go to the starting position unaware of my location. The next waves won’t trigger if you keep at least 2 zealots alive.

      Yes. I also practiced a bit before going for the recorded attempt. To be honest, I wasn't very meticulous in this run and was mostly trying to have fun for this challenge.

    2:40:45 How come for the Garrador encounter, there wasn’t a female Ganado grabber and a scythe guy, as well as additional enemies when you killed the first 3 enemies?
    Edit: I see at 2:46:21, the two enemies appeared. Where were they this whole time?

      It’s the same as what I do in my normal strat. When the encounter starts you can make noise three times before Garradors are free, you can shoot multiple times in a short interval counting as one amount of noise. The two ganados will then head to where you were shooting once you set the Garradors free (and the garradors would go there too but I prevent that by sprinting so they follow me and leave the ganados there)

    Dude, will you play with TMP + Stock Walkthrough with other optional weapon?
    Like sticker also... The Red9 + Stock aiming is more comfortable compare with TMP + Stock...
    Even i am fans with TMP but i feel TMP + Stock still hard for aiming, Red9 is better aiming.
    Off course everyone use Red9 offen but i still hope someone can do main TMP + Stock Walkthrough with 2 or 3 additional support weapon like Sticker or Rifle to get S+ Rank...🙌

      Hm, the problem is that you have to use the SG in the first chapters or it's very awkward. I'd need to see the ammo situation, I believe it's okay since speedrunners would primarily use the TMP at some point.
      I did use the TMP with the stock in my level 1 run, it's pretty good.

      I still feel RE5 Professional mode is the hardest RE series... 1 single hit on any majine will ko e Chris😂

      It's not much different than the default value for aiming, but for camera speed I definitely increase quite a bit.

    So for the Goat Head encounter, the enemies only spawn Plaga if the Red Zealot summons them, and not when you kill them?

    I see you are using Punisher on the shield guys. But the damage of that gun sucks so much that it wasn't making much of a difference

      Yeah it’s pretty weak (although to be fair I took a while to fully upgrade it) but all you need is a stun to then use melee or your main damage pistol.

      Punisher w/ laser is a super underrated pistol on professional. Especially on console. High wince buys critical seconds in combat.

      @@bluemarvel333 The thing that I really don't like about the laser sight is when you're shooting very distant targets. It's hard to notice where you're currently pointing when you're not hitting the target. I wish the laser would extend just like the original or at least they should keep the HUD to give you an idea where you are currently pointing at.

    Every time I watch you play this, I get an urge to replay it myself. I do not understand the relationship between me and RE4R. It's like that one fuck up of a friend who disappoints you with his choices in life, but you still like him because when he gets his shit together, his potential shines through.

      I mean it’s undeniable that the gameplay of RE4R can be very fun despite the numerous issues and bad decisions. This is definitely the RE engine game where they put the most effort in the gameplay. It’s easy to say that RE2R or RE7 look more “polished” when those games don’t have half of the complexity of this one. And these game also have their own bad hitboxes, designs as well. The biggest question is if those issues are impossible to find workarounds. A lot of issues can also be seen when approaching the fights incorrectly - and that’s kind of normal in a survival horror game.

      @@Aether2125 I have a feeling Capcom do not have the time to polish their games since the company decided to turn RE into an almost annual franchise. I mean, since 2017, we've gotten 5 AAA RE games. 5 games in 6 years. The same development cycle was during classical RE period, but development was easier back then.
      But I cannot excuse conscious bad designs. Bad hitboxes, phantom range and the like are the results of improper playtesting. But shit aiming with pistols, rng bullet travel, reticle bloom etc. were done on purpose. Inconsistent stuns and spongy enemies come directly from the previous remakes, so does the reticle focus, which should have been reworked for this game. If they did not want players to abuse stuns, the developers should have made enemies flinch from headshots. Not stunned for melee, just flinch. Second consecutive headshot during the flinch animation should guarantee a hard stun. They made something like this with a focused shot during the running animation, but should have expanded upon it, add more hidden mechanics.
      But I agree, once you know the game well and how to approach enemy encounters, the game becomes good enough. And forward knowledge of the game that leads to smart resource management is a staple of survival horror.

      @@Fedor_Kisliakov but the games that were made in the previous era (RE5, RE6 and RE7) are not any better in that sense. They all have some bad hitboxes, phantom range and bad designs as well. The only difference for me is that those games have a better understanding of how to make their main systems more enjoyable and effective while RE4R is usually self sabotaging by killing the fun of its own systems.

      @@Aether2125 I would say that in those games, there are next to none fundamental flaws within core mechanics. Maybe in RE6 they began to surface, but that game was too big and ambitious for Capcom. There are some flawed encounters, maybe certain enemy designs are not great. But in RE4R, the fundamentals themselves are flawed. Stuff like inability to crouch and shoot/reload at the same time, terrible movement, reticle focus, bullet spread, wonky detection on certain melee attacks, etc. Older games were more refined.

      @@Fedor_Kisliakov it isn’t just RE6. RE5 has several issues with its core mechanics too. Inconsistent leg stuns (an issue when trying to prevent plagas), basic enemies that have hyperarmor in many animations, co-op designs that make no sense on solo or were never properly tested, poorly implemented plagas. The inability to crouch and shoot I would say to be a minor thing in 4R. In a way the limited movement is also a problem in RE5 with some enemies and it also has wonky detection in certain melee attacks (mostly noticeable for Sheva). The combo system is also very flawed in solo where it’s extremely inconvenient to set it up with the AI. And the QTEs in RE5 are easily the most broken in the entire series. I can point a few that are undoubtedly horrendous: Wesker in LiN, Ndesu, Irving. RE4 og also had a few terrible QTEs but it was saved by the fact that you could spam all possible buttons.
      For RE7, it barely has core mechanics in the first place but even so it has flawed implementation with the guard mechanic that sometimes doesn’t protect you in time, instant attacks triggered when the game thinks you’re sprinting but you’re not, bad detection of crouching under specific attacks, bad detection of chainsaw as parry , bad detection of the axe you use against Mia (it can hit the walls for no reason). Just notice how the games that have the most mechanics (RE6 and RE4R) are the ones with most apparent flaws but in actuality they are trying to implement much more complex systems working in a much wider variety of scenarios with complex animations.

      Blacktail in general but for this run Red9. Blacktail has the best balance of firepower, accuracy, and firing rate.

      @@thesecondrei1 Yes. Shotgun would be riot gun and rifle would be Bolt Action Rifle if using upgrades, otherwise CQBR.
