- Did you know that volunteer fire departments across New York State have a Junior Firefighter program for youths between the ages of 13-18? If you are a young person who is looking for a way to not only help their community but learn key leadership skills, consider becoming a Junior firefighter.

To all of you that watched this video and want to become firefighters one day. I too was a jr. firefighter. We called it an explorer program here on the west coast. That program was and still is awesome. It helped me tremendously. I am now a Fire Captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and have been with this great department for the last 22 years. Stay focused and committed everyone and you’ll get there....

Same here, it has been the best experience of my life! From the training to seeing different fire houses and working with the firefighters, they have given me some good tips and it would be amazing to work or volunteer with them
There are no programs near me 😕 so I can’t really get that edge like I do very badly want to. I’m a high schooler and if there are no programs I wish there was a way where I could at least be at the firehouse for a few hours at a time and learn what they do and help around (as much as I can) to get a glimpse at what they do but I don’t think anything like that exists which sucks so much it hurts. Idk what to do, all I can do is just finish school and get a degree related, along with EMT certification. But still I really wish I could do something more…

I have been in the junior/cadet program for 3 years and absolutely love it. When I turn 18, I plan on either volunteering or working at my fire house while in college to become a paramedic. I am still not sure which one I want to become but for sure want to be a first responder!
So sad my local department doesn't have a Junior Firefighter program. It seems so interesting.

I'm a junior 17 on a rural fire dept (not many members) have been to over 40 calls and have had to on multiple occasions go inside of a structure fire, House, barn and a travel trailer because of lack of members. (Only 3 arrived on scene)
There is a vol. FD near me that also is mostly people younger than 18 years old. There are only a few adults on the department. They had to get special permission from the Ontario Canada govt to allow these young people to respond to actual calls but the need was there so they ok’d it. They get mostly auto X calls due to them living in the transcanada Hwy.

I think every fire/ems and police departments should have juniors volunteer too. For example I want to volunteer to be a police officer I want to learn the technology not just that I also want to help the community:)

Volunteer Firefighter here from the 🇵🇭 i am 16 and hell. What we do ain’t for fun, we ain’t treated like babies we are treated the same way as Department Firefighters are a lot of us are in our 14’s to 20’s and hell. I thought the day i joined Reservist cadets was the hardest part of my life, then i joined Volunteer fire brigades. Hell this is a real treat brothers. We will someday eliminate that Bolang Apoy (Ball of Flame) if may not we at least lessen the spark of every flames. Keep safe brothers

Once i turn 14 in 2 years i will do that then when i turn 16 i will volunteer then once im 18 an finish higschool apply for the fireacademy and balance online colloege im a girl ready to power the world dude
You know what you should do is in the summer during high school only take one firefighter paramedic class and you’ll get done in about a year and a half that’s what my parents told me and I’m only 11 and when I turn 14 I’m gonna do the same thing and when I am when I get into high school I’m gonna start doing the firefighter paramedic classes you have to be both now and some

Keep at it! Joined at 14 and progressed thru the ranks and am now an assistant chief and paramedic. These programs will keep us in business.
Im a explorer and my favorite thing its not cookie cutter or has imitations due to welth. We volunteer ,clean trucks, do some fun but also involving classroom learning and go on field and do physically demanding tasks while also having to foucus on the complex task at hand. While for the things we do seem small in our small community with only 6 explorers it makes a large difference for our fd.

My son had been dreaming since he was 5! He is now 12 and is so excited to start this year🚒🔥🔥can’t wait to see what future holds
As a Junior FF currently, I have some advice for your son:
When you join you will likely be the youngest person there, the people around you have the experience and you can learn from them. Things may get boring or tough at times, but I promise it will be worth it, waking up early or staying up late will all be worth it someday! Also, making one or more friends within the junior program is always a good idea, it's good to have someone to talk to about firefighting and the large amount of knowledge you are soaking up. Enjoy it and stay safe!
I remember my Jr. Firefighter days, I loved it.
I was a junior firefighter back in the 90s I 44 years old right now can a firefighter every time I joined up when I was 17 some of the best days of my life don't regret it one bit to all your future Junior Firefighters out there go for it trust me you will not regret it

I am a jr volunteer firefighter in Finland we don't do much we just learn how the vehicles work and how to save lives Etc etc when I get 16 I can go on emergencies with the real lifesavers.

in NZ you can be a full fledged volunteer at 16
(With parental permission though)
And you need parental+the schools permission to leave school to go on school
I started at age 13 as a cadet , I retired at age 32 as chief investigator , it's worth every minute of it

I too started as a Junior Firefighter, 1 of 9 remaining Volunteer Fire Departments within 5 boros of NYC. Started at 13/14 and at turned 18 in 2000. I'm the Ex.-Chief of West Hamilton Beach VFD Queens, NY. Volunteer Pride! It made the man I am today. Never stop learning, Combat ready always and train. Listen and learn from the senior man and/or women! Take classes and learn the task of the JOB. Know your response area and study SOP SOGS.

Have you thought about - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one off product for firefighter interview tips minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got astronomical results with it.
