    Im a retired groomer. I was clipping the nails on a very large, male 10 month old chow. Out of no where, he launched himself at me and caused lacerations on my arms. He jumped off the table and was hanging himself. It took 3 off us to get him off the table. He came after each of us. He knocked me down and broke 2 of my ribs. I was Taken by ambulance to the hospital. Never again!

      My experienced groomer friend was helping me right before Christmas several years ago in the original Rover‘s building and we had a chow that was supposed to be groomed. He was so aggressive. We could barely even get a leash back on him to get him in a cage. When the owner got there, we had the owner come back and get him out of the cage because we were afraid he was going to bite us.

      the bully breeds can turn immediately and for no reason. My brother years ago came upon a huge chow who had been attacked badly by a pack of dogs in the area. His eye was hanging out,... My brother took him to the vets patched him up and brought him to his house. Pooch they called him. When I would come to visit, love dogs, afraid of them, really afraid of Pooch, they would, thank goodness put him in the basement/garage for me to get into the house and visa versa. On one visit, as I am always up before anyone, Pooch was sitting on the deck all by himself. Huh, I went out and sat beside this boy MUCH BIGGER THAN ME. Our parents were visiting on that trip. When they got up looking for me and my brother sawing me sitting with Pooch he got our parents right away. But I could never do that again. It is so awful to get that it is so overwhelming.

      They did have a child 2 weeks ago. Probably were too busy caring for this newborn. To be able to take care of the dog properly. Babies are alot of work. And it takes people to take care of them a long time. Yes theirs 2 people their. One works. One has to stay home for the baby. So don't judge just bc all this happend! Sometimes accidents happen this dog probably gets well taken care of. The owners were probably too busy to care for her fur properly.
      Plus. Their house is probably a mess or this newborn is just very fussy and can't be left unattended very often even when their asleep things can happen.

      @VexaA541 this level of filth, matting, and her being intact didn't happen in the last 2 weeks, or the last 8 months of a pregnancy.
      This is long term animal abuse, plain and simple, from people who apparently preferred aesthetics over proper care.

    i have a male chow, i brush him everyday have done since the day i got him and he goes to groomers every month for a shampoo and trim, hes 4 years old now never had a problem with him, he lifts his paws for nail trim. its so sad when people dont put in the work these dogs need for grooming up keep. i think a lot of the problem with chows is there very much a 1 person dog, much like cats they have to come to you. great job as always Marybeth ty for the work you do

    I'm in month 5 of owning my 3rd chow. 2, including this one, have been rescues. I have a very knowledgeable and experienced groomer who says to the dog "listen Mr, I am the queen and this is my castle. What I say is what goes here!" And they fall in line and do as she says. However, after a bad grooming experience at a major pet store chain, I only go to low stimulus environments where I can sit with the dog for the whole grooming session. I find this keeps my chow calm and relaxed and focused.
    I love my chowdren and treasure each day with them.

    I agree on the fear of chows, but this sweet girl just looks so defeated, so sad. As someone mentioned, this is probably the most attention that she’s had in a long time. I normally don’t advocate for people reforming after a baby, but I think in this case, it would be best for this dog, to go to a home where someone will pay attention to her, to love her

    I have to agree that if you've got a dog with a high-maintenance coat like this and you've just had a baby & you KNOW you're not going to have time to brush her & take her to the groomer as much as she needs, a shavedown is the right choice. A year from now it'll all have grown back and her owners will be feeling much more on top of things than they are right now. If it doesn't grow back quite correctly, well. She's not a show dog anyway.

    I know typically chows are supposed to be aggressive in the sense of territorial, and protective of their pack. But I've never had a bad experience with one, and I've never owned one but know a handful of people over the years that have had them. Owners have told me I'm for some reason I'm strangely an exception. My friend's grandma has a black show this size. A different family friend when younger had two light tan chows that were definitely bigger as a neighborhood few houses down too from my mom.
    I think they're extra sensitive to people's moods, don't know, especially if they aren't frequently taken in the public for socialization from puppy age on. And typically people are already wary of chows to begin with and they can sense it. This one is exceptionally calm and sweet. ❤

    Chows are predominately 1 owner dogs. Fiercely loyal , to the point where many shelters consider them unadoptable and either won't take them in , or won't adopt them out if they do. They have a bad reputation for biting children specifically. They do require a mindful owner who puts in the training work , and extra care and time put into socializing them.
    For this dogs owner, a see a lot of comments saying they shouldn't have the dog. A new baby especially for first time parents will turn an entire household upside down. I imagine the person who is generally responsible for this dogs daily grooming , is the primary care giver to the new baby as well.
    When you consider how well behaved this girl was , it is a testimony to her having been cared for well.
    So Im withholding judgement , if she comes back at later date in a similar state , maybe then there should be more concerns over her general welfare.

    • @thatvalensteingirl
      @thatvalensteingirl Місяць тому +3

      Her last grooming was 8 months prior and she's clearly been ignored since then-- food and water alone aren't sufficient care for animals.
      Primary care for the new baby started 2 weeks ago-- where was the care for their dog for the past 7.5 months?

    • @trishatate327
      @trishatate327 Місяць тому +3

      @@thatvalensteingirl Just because she hadn't been to a groomer in that amount of time does not mean the dog was neglected that same amount of time.
      You were not provided with enough information to make any of the conclusions you came to. The fact this dog is of this breed and was as trusting and gentle as she was , is far more evidence to her having been well socialized and cared for , then the matts she had being evidence to the contrary. Further more people who don't care for their animals well beings, don't reach out for help for them either.
      The internet is over saturated with people sitting at their desks drooling in the anticipation of finding someone to judge and be critical of.

    This Chow Chow is a sweetie! Too bad the owners don't give her the care she needs. If you don't like brushing dogs, don't get a Chow! I've only been around three Chows my entire life (66 yrs old), and they were wonderful dogs, all living in households with children. I think with Chow Chow's you really have to work at socializing them. Their natural behavior is to be solitary, antisocial, and a one person dog.

    I had a chow, husky, shepherd mix when I was a teen. I bathed him once a week to get him used to baths. I brushed him twice daily. But he still didn't like my other siblings or anyone else to groom him. In the summer I worked on top of Pikes Peak and lived in the employee dorms there. So I only came home once a week. One day, I came down the mountain, and my dad said he surrendered my dog because my sister left the sliding glass door unlocked, and it had just a tiny crack.
    My sister had a friend over, and Apache got his nose into the crack , opened the door, and attacked the girl.
    It was the only option given to my dad, at least that's what he told me.
    One day, I had a great dog, and the next, I never got to say goodbye. It was the hardest thing I experienced and took over 30 years before I got another dog. Take care of your dogs.

    I groomed my own Chow Chow. She loved it. But I'm positive that she never would have allowed anyone else to do it. Chow Chow's are normally a one person dog, just like Chihuahua's

    I have a blue Chow and have had several previously. I'm so stuck to them as well as American Pit Bull, Shetland Sheep Dog, and Pomeranians. Can't help my love of these various breeds. I have always groomed my pets because I haven't had the money for professional grooming and my mom and vet told me stories of unacceptable treatment by local groomers. I know it's not everyone or every breed. When grooming students are told what breeds never took accept, that's really sad. Okay, back to what I was saying, I groom my Chow, and he's fabulous, except for scissor work. He has an absolute fear! I have no idea where this came from, but it makes grooming around his head and feet really difficult. Having said all that, my boy loves (!!!!) the bath and the towelling afterwards. He wiggles and wriggles. It's so much fun! Keeping the hair behind a Chow's ears from matting is only avoided by brushing every day. The condition of the Chow in this video makes me really angry and sad. The owners should be ashamed of themselves.

    It's sad they didn't find you sooner before they had the baby. I understand your fear after being bit. I have a fear of unknown pit bull/ mastiff after one went after my chiweenie and knocked me down flat on my back. Ended up having to have my back fused. So now I head in another direction.

    I worked for a veterinarian. One day a chow came in the clinic for treatment. He bit the doctor’s hand leaving a long gash across his palm. The doc sutured his hand shut himself! When one works with animals you learn what breeds are problematic and not to be trusted.

    What would be best is for that dog to be rehomed with someone who will put in the time to either take care of it

    People can have babies not take care of their dogs. Sure, a dog isn't a human but generally how people treat their pets is a good sign of how they'd treat their kids.

    I’ve wanted to come to you forever but I only have chows lol.. they’ve been groomed their whole lives and are incredibly sweet and obedient (except my youngest, she’s just very lovey and hyper lol) do you not groom ALL chows strictly, even if they’re non aggressive?
