  • Rice is the number two most consumed staple in the world. Its versatility and inherent long shelf life are a large part of why this is the case.
Rice can be used for human or animal consumption, so having a good stock of it is important for emergencies.

Just want to say THANK YOU. I finally broke open my 23 qt Presto and today I canned 14 pints of ground beef and nothing blew up! I did a test run with water. I had browned the meat last night (about 13 lbs) so I did everything cold/cool. All my lids have pinged. I may be hooked! Don’t think I would have tried it without your video and discussions on canning. Yay! Gonna dig out all my frozen meat and get it canned.

Tip: if you want smaller portions in the mylar bags; simply cut the gallon sized bags in half, seal one end, fill, seal the other end. This way you get 1/2 gallon of rice (or whatever you are storing) in a bag instead of opening a whole gallon bag.

I set up some rice for long-term storage last year, about 25lbs. I did the whole shebang. I put it in the freezer for 4 days, pulled them out, loaded mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, and THEN putting it in a bucket with a tight lid. PRO TIP: Use a flat iron (or hair) to seal your mylar bags. If you open one and don't need all the contents, you can cut off the top (that was sealed before), drop in some fresh absorbers, and reseal with the flat iron. So much easier than a clothes iron!

A great convenient way to store rice is by cooking it then double bagging it. I put some in zip lock sandwich bags, flatten them seal tightly. Then stack as many as possible in a freezer bag seal tightly and freeze. The rice lasts for years. Tastes like freshly cooked. That method minus flattening works for donuts and French toast too.

Parboiled rice Compared to white rice, parboiled rice has fewer calories, fewer carbohydrates, more fiber, and more protein. This makes it a healthier alternative to traditional white rice.
I am also diabetic, it has Reduced Diabetes Symptoms
Studies suggest that, in comparison to both white rice and brown rice, parboiled rice has a lower impact on blood sugar levels, making it a safer choice for people with diabetes than other rice's. This may be especially true if you refrigerate leftover parboiled rice and then eat the leftovers, as storing parboiled rice in cold temperatures may further reduce the impact it has on your blood sugar levels.

I have a test bucket of basmati rice I’ve kept in a plain ole Walmart bucket with lid for over 10 years. No oxygen absorbers, mylar, nothing. Recently made a batch and it was delicious 😋. I will never again waste money on mylar or oxygen absorbers for rice. It was stored in a climate controlled pantry about 70 degrees farenheit the whole time.

This is a great video. We are rice eaters and I do store it using mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. I find if you are a white rice eater the 1 gal mylar bags are great for storage and can fit 5 in a 5 gal bucket easily. 1 gal bag holds about 5 lbs of rice nicely. If you use a 5 gal mylar bag it will hold 35 lbs of white rice in a 5 gal bucket.

I enjoy a variety of rices, most of what I store for long term is the standard white rice but I store other rices like basmatti and jasmine. I fill mylar bags no bigger then one gallon since I'm prepping mainly for me and the cat. I use oxygen absorbers in alk my bags and moisture absorbers in the buckets between the bags. I do have some brown but that is mostly my "user" rice

To keep rice from being sticky just rinse it two or three times in cool water. Put in cool water and mix around, pour off cloudy water and repeat. Never a problem. I only cook rice in a rice cooker.

Rice is in my top ten. You can do so much with it - I store a simple short grain white rice LT ( there are so many tricks you can do with it in cooking and life) . The rest are fun and if I had to live without a certain variety thats fine; brown rice doesn't agree with 2 of the 6 and honestly, I don't like it. I do have specialty rices, I would never worry about long term storage with them.

I haven't invested in mylar/o2 obsorbers because I still have cases and cases of gifted mayo/sketti sauce jars that I use for vac sealing. I don't like to vac seal in plastic for long term storage because I have found that after just so long (as short as 1 year) the food will take on the taste of the plastic.

I am new to oxygen absorbers and mylar. I stored a pack of 200cc absorbers in 3 pint size jars. A jar with only a handful somehow ended up with condensation in the jar. I had placed the absorbers in the jar and used my vacuum sealer lid to suck out the air. I was not thinking and used the ones from the condensated jar in my 1 gallon mylar bags of rice. I just dropped them in on one side and a 300 cc on the other side of the bag at the top last night. This morning I woke on wondering if the moisture in or on the oxygen absorber will cause food rot. What is the best way to dry the rice back out? There shouldn't be a lot of moisture off the absorber pack but I am thinking maybe I should drop the top portion of my rice bags onto a cookie sheet and oven dry them but I am not sure what temperature and time to use for this small amount. Thank you for helping the world get prepared! You are awesome!

I tried to vacuum seal my mylar bag with my food saver but it will not seal it, even if I put strips of the vaccum sealer bag at the corners of the mylar bag so the vacuum sealer can suck out the air.
I put a oxygen absorber in the bag with the rice and just sealed it up using the food saver bag. I don't know how well the food saver bag will hold up for long term storage.

I froze numerous bags of rice, flour and pastas in the freezer doing the 3 day freeze routine. I had taken the food out of their original plastic bags, placed the foods in vac bags first. Didn’t like the cheap plastic they were bought in.Someone mentioned that it would be a good idea to spread the food out on cookie sheets and give it a few days to warm up to remove all the moisture, before I put the food in mason jars or Mylar. It’s been 3 days now sitting on top of cookie sheets and I am worried I have ruined my food. Should I put the food back in vac bags, freeze for a few days again due to any eggs that may have hatched and then take it out of freezer. Let the food come to room temperature and then store properly in mason jars or Mylar bags. Or can I just bag it up now from the cookie sheets and place in jars with a oxygen absorber. (Which is what I think I should have done from the very beginning. Help. My gosh what a issue.

When I first started using oxygen absorbers 20 years ago I was told to keep them in an airtight jar, canning jar, in a cold place, fridge or freezer, and when I need one to open the jar quickly and quickly put the oxygen absorber into the jar of food and quickly put the lid on both of those jars so Air does not get to the absorbers. Does that still hold true today with today’s technology? I feel like I am always rushing to put that lid on the jars so they stay fresh and good.

How Many Oxygen Absorbers Should I use?
A general rule of thumb is to use 300-500cc of oxygen absorber per gallon of food you are storing.
A little chart on how that works out:
      1 Quart Bag - 100cc oxygen absorber
      1 Gallon Bag - 1-2 300cc oxygen absorbers
2 Gallon Bag - 2-500cc oxygen absorbers or 1-1000cc oxygen absorber
      5 Gallon Bag - 1-2 2000cc oxygen absorbers or 2-3 1000cc oxygen absorbers
