From what I've researched on the first students of Uyeshiba... early training methods of Uyeshiba were brutal and practical. The guy was a warrior in every sense of the word, and his students often cross trained with Jigoro Kano's top level Judoka on regular basis. In Masahiko Kimura's (legendary in the Judo and BJJ community, and well known for his victory over Helio Gracie) Autobiography "My Judo"... he talks about getting his arm dislocated when sparring hard with one of Uyeshiba's top students. Seems like as O'Sensei got in his elder years... and after living the carnage and aftermath of World War 2... he started teaching Aikido as a much "softer", more "peaceful", non combative art.
@@kazumpet720 Masahiro Kimura wrote an Autobiography on his life. Go out and buy it, it's an awesome book and shows a lot of great martial arts historical moments, including his fight with Helio Gracie. It's called "My Judo."
Uyeshiba got the idea for Aikido when he was in China and was able to observe cheng style Baguazhang in Peking which was very popular at the time and was uniquely circular with many blending throwing techniques

It is very interesting to hear the stories about Morihei Ueshiba's childhood and how his philosophical approach to fighting helped him learn to fight. I would really be interested to know how he fought back then.
I see people criticizing you here for being respectful towards a genuine teacher, lol. Any sense of genuineness or respect, they interpret as teacher worship. People need to respect that it's your life. If you feel like practicing more aikido, like returning to your roots with new insight, it's not really their business. If you move on to other arts for the rest of your life, it's not really their business.
An old shihan in Japan told us candidly that O'Sensei's Aikido was the perfection of Daito Ryu, an ancient battle tested form of Jujitsu (involving weapons stand up and ground fighting where the intention is not to win a contest but survive a bloodbath) where judo came as well. The kind of Aikido we have right now on the other hand is its emasculated form.
That is a fascinating perspective that I find very intuitive. When you think about it, all martial arts seek to train you to do more of what is necessary, and more significantly, less of what is unnecessary, so that you don't waste your energies. Aikido is that idea taken to the extreme, where you optimize things so well that you end up using very little energy at all.
I trained with Nadeau Sensei on many occasions. He's an entertaining, intelligent guy. It's true what he said. You either love him or hate him. I love him.

In the picture of O'Sensei with 3 men, the man on the left is Roy Suenaka. He was my instructor and recently passed away in 2020. Robert Nadeau certainly remembers him.
At last we have a real Sensei who doesn't have to espouse fiction as to what he's all about (Seagal) and is real, and tells it like it is. And I'm truly with this guy. I'm not capable, at least not for any length of time, to be in an Om state. I just hope I can do it while practicing martial arts at this point, at my advanced age.
Chogyam Trungpa had same approach. He avoided this "outward showing" with all the robes and headdresses, etc. He taught about a concept called "Spiritual Materialism". A concept definitely worth looking into.

That part where he basically called Saito Sensei an idiot is really telling about the man. I once had a conversation with him back in early 2000’s. I asked him about kiai. He said, “there is no kiai in aikido”. I asked him about the videos of O-Sensei clearly demonstrating kiai. He said, “that must be dubbed in.” Then I asked him about weapons in aikido. He said, “there are no weapons in aikido.” I mentioned that Saito Sensei taught aiki-ken and aiki-jo for ten years in Hombu dojo. He said, “then it must have been against O-Sensei’s wishes. For someone who was O-Sensei’s “friend” he didn’t t know an awful lot about O-Sensei. Too bad for him UA-cam came around so he couldn’t spread these lies anymore.

Now that comment about sumo made so many things clear, as aikido locks do counter many sumo pushes, just as spinning counters sumo forward balance for charging. Now... O-sensei looked like a genius martial artist who had the hardest of times trying to make people understand what he was trying to teach. I don't think he'd enjoy seeing how much removed from self-defense aikido most has become.
Should have went to New York and interviewed and trained with Shizuo Imaizumi who was top disciple of Koichi Tohei...he was around when O'Sensei died and aikido world was breaking up. His techniques would put annual All Japan national aikido demonstration to shame. Even in his eighties, the guy is a "monster" in his martial arts ability. Aikido world fragmented after death of O'Sensei and his son, Doshu (Kisshomaru Ueshiba), took over. Internally, one of the things that they did was to offer "official" high belt ranking to get back top practitioners into Aikikai fold. Shizuo Imaizumi was one of those practitioners. He refused to go back to Aikikai though. This is not commonly publicized today and has pretty much being wiped out from aikido history. O'Sensei's style kept on evolving until the day he died. Morihiro Saito (middle aikido) and Koichi Tohei (post-war aikido) spent most time studying under O'Sensei. Saito's background was in judo and karate while Tohei's background was in judo. Koichi Tohei was the greatest disciple of O'Sensei and when he came to US in 1950s, he had to defeat numerous wrestlers, judo fighters, karate masters, ju-jitsu masters in open public demonstration, quite often, facing multiple attackers in unrehearsed match.
I started Aikido in 73-74 under a Saito Sensei, but I doubt it was the same Saito Sensei mentioned here. Mine was a Probation Officer in Southern California. Mr. Nadeau mentioning that O’Sensei was a sickly child. If you read much history in the Martial Arts, it seems to be a convention that famous Martial Artists all had to be sickly as a child.

I am surprised you didn’t ask about aikido being a martial art that is not effective against people who can fight, especially good martial artists of other more practical arts. And why osense taught a non sparing art, one that was only like dancing where one person sort of makes attack motions, but not effective ones and certainly with no intent of being effective and the other person throws the first person, while the first person allows the throw with no resistance. I am surprised you didn’t ask those important questions. Were you uncomfortable to ask that? Its a pity because it is the real problem with aikido andcwhat is keeping people away. Aikido is nit understood by anyone. I got the feeling that even this 7th Dan guy was not really understanding and just going through the motions of something he mastered. Please go back and ask the real questions. I do not get the smoking and drinking thing. The guy has a smokers cough. Morihei Ueshiba ironically gave out ranks because he felt they were useless. What was important was the menkyyo. Something his son tried to rectify when he took over and changed Aikido to what it is now.
Beyond shodan, all grades are crap, you get on the mat do your thing, What happens if you visit a club where the 5th dan is not as good as you are, and you are a shodan, what does that say about your grade or his grade. People see the sensei above because he is Ok and knows a lot of information about what he is interested in. If you think your teacher is a 10th dan, and you consider him a master, thats all that matters, but beware having a 10th dan does not mean your a master, a master is special, and its extremly hard to put your finger on it. Best advice i was given was when i was chosen to represent my country (long time ago), it was our first time back in the dojo, any way we had just done a kata and we were all in line, my instructor walked up up stood in front of me and said 'your sh*t', he paused for a second, then went down the line saying it to everyone, and pointed a finger at himself and said the same thing. 'your sh*t, we are all different shades of brown' If we keep this in mind the best we should ever think we are is OK, this way we have a place to grow.

Usually having a 10th degree means something is wrong. There is an Aikido master in my country who claims to be a 12th dan
Morihei Ueshiba ironically gave out ranks because he felt they were useless. What was important was the menkyyo. Something his son tried to rectify when he took over and changed Aikido to what it is now.

Beyond shodan, all grades are crap, you get on the mat do your thing, What happens if you visit a club where the 5th dan is not as good as you are, and you are a shodan, what does that say about your grade or his grade. People see the sensei above because he is Ok and knows a lot of information about what he is interested in. If you think your teacher is a 10th dan, and you consider him a master, thats all that matters, but beware having a 10th dan does not mean your a master, a master is special, and its extremly hard to put your finger on it. Best advice i was given was when i was chosen to represent my country (long time ago), it was our first time back in the dojo, any way we had just done a kata and we were all in line, my instructor walked up up stood in front of me and said 'your sh*t', he paused for a second, then went down the line saying it to everyone, and pointed a finger at himself and said the same thing. 'your sh*t, we are all different shades of brown' If we keep this in mind the best we should ever think we are is OK, this way we have a place to grow.
@@MartialArtsJourney in reality tho, he has multiple authoritative entities who claim to be backing his knowledge and rank, some claiming to acknowledge him as a founder of a system and multiple claiming to support his rank at each dan and they are even from different martial arts. There are multiple entities who have awarded him as a 10th dan as well for some exemplary feat and acknowldged his title as Grand Master "So-Shihan-han-shi" no clue what it means.... lol these plaques just cover our largest wall..... Nah I guess everyone you haven't met is just a liar.
