I know in reality E&M were just very close friends, but they can deviate. After all, they already did it by making Max fall in love with Elizabeth, and she obviously has troubled feelings for him too. Honestly, I would love for them to become lovers in the rest of the series. Max understands her much better than Franz. Sophia used to love Charlotte over Sisi and also remind her why she wasn't as smart as Charlotte. Such a drama.
