Jerry Hadley - Una Furtiva Lagrima

- Jerry Hadley sings Nemorino's act II aria from L'elisir D'amore by Donizetti. 1985. Jerry Hadley (June 16, 1952 July 18, 2007) was a student of my teacher from 1978, after getting his masters degree in music from the University of Illinois in 1977. He then started teaching at the University of Connecticut. A 1993 article by Noël Goodwin in Opera magazine stated, "After 15 years Hadley still goes back to this Sicilian American who, he says, gave him confidence and secure knowledge of what he is doing with his voice at any given time, through teaching methods that are direct and physiological." Hadley also stated, "(I was) lucky above all else to have found a teacher in New York without whom I really doubt I could have really built the career I have." Here he displays wonderful balanced vocal registration and release of constriction which are the cornerstones of the technique that he learned and that I teach.
You just gotta love it when someone starts coughing in the middle of your cadenza.
4:34, when he sings "si può morir" ... chills. Especially given his life story.
I only know Jerry Hadley from seeing his performances in UA-cam and I am so sad that I never got to see him in person. Such a tragic and senseless loss to the world and to his family. This is probably my favorite interpretation of this aria which is performed so often that one could get tired of hearing it. In this version is sounds fresh and new. That ending is masterful, it gave me chills.
Absolutely gorgeous singing. His voice is simply a beautiful sound perfectly produced. Beautiful line. Excellent, clear, crisp diction. Healthy, natural free vibrato. A bright, ringing, open, clear sound produced with full energy, engagement, and ease. Even throughout. And on top of all of that, heartrending in his simple, straightforward, honest feeling. This is top world class musicianship, performance, vocalism, and singing.
He sings with such open honesty. A candle that has burnt out to soon. I feel such joy listening to this piece and sadness at the same time. RIP, Jerry we will all miss you.
I watched him perform this opera and I'll never forget how beautifully he sang this while lying down on his side, his propped up on his elbow. It's the only time a singer's performance made me cry.
TECHNIQUE! It is all in the talent WITH technique.:)
To bring such a performance on a concert stage is only possible if u are in total control of your instrument and absolutely fearless. Chapeau!
I just love his artistry. There are many tenors but his voice and artistry just make me melt.
You know it's good when the orchestra is applauding.
If only.....He always looked as if he loved singing. He was joyous.
He is at peace, but those who knew him and loved him lose him every day.
My gosh, that was so beautiful. 💙🙏🏾🙏🏽🙏🏿
I found Jerry Hadley on UA-cam, never had heard of him before, but the firs time I heard him sing I knew he was special. Then I found out about his untimely death and was very sad to think this great singer had been lost to the world. This is a wonderful performance of Una Furtiva Lagrima.
me too, so youthful voice, artistry 200%, hard to duplicate this, so naturally handsome,
Truly beautiful lyric tenor voice. At 4:37 he floats his magical pianissimo, voca faringea impeccably! 4:53 even more effortless heartbreaking coloratura! ❤
Fabulous singing and great acting. R.I.P., Jerry Hadley.
I've listened to this 100 times... and it never I never tier of it. Perfection
Since 1982 I have enjoyed hearing Jerry Hadley sing. This is how I remember him.
Perfection. The voice, the interpretation. Gigli -esque! Splendid!
Third greatest interpretation that I have ever heard of this aria. Caruso/Gigli/ and now Mr. Hadley. Absolutely and supremely sensitive. Thank you for posting this!
He was 33 when he sung this Although his voice developed(and got better) this was when it was undoubtedly at it's most beautiful.
At least we had 22 years more of this glorious instrument, before life got to him and ended it all.
What a magnificent performance. Surely one of the very best tenors that ever graced this earth.
It is a great loss that two of the best lyric tenors of our era, Fritz Wunderlich and Jerry Hadley, died so untimely, at such a young age. How much more they could have contributed to our musical heritage!!
RIP, Jerry and Fritz!!
truly great tenor in these modern times
What a loss...RIP Jerry!
Grande! Immenso cantante
Yes, and similar to all the old great singers.
Very moving little tribute. He deserved that praise. Dittos on missing him.
Wow! So beautiful. Thank you.
One of my voice teachers, Mark Baker, was very fond of Jerry and used him as an example a lot when teaching. Mark, I believe, worked with Jerry at the Met in the late 80s, early 90s.
highest taste of craftsmanship, what a class of highest class!
Marvelous... just marvelous!
Karlott
Simply wonderful freedom of voice production
Bravo!!!
I love him also on Bernstein's Candide. LB loved his voice.
Brilliant! Bravo! TY
Awesome! Bravo! This great artist goes right to my favourites. I've never before heard of him,but shall now hear much of him!
brilliant,pure class.
I like what he's doing. It's unusual for me to hear such a clarity, power, projection, beauty of tone, all that "metal " and yet without any forcing. He sings so easy. Perhaps one can prefer other voices but he's doing great here I think.
My teacher built his voice from the beginning after University. It is all about talent getting the right training. People can prefer different timbres, but that has nothing to do with how well someone is singing. As you rightly allude to.
Superb!
Dobrib-Thank you for sending me this awesome performance. Have a great week-end my friend.
Обворожительный красавчик
Браво !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Потрясающей красоты артист
Bravissimo- what a voice!
This is the voice that catapulted Jerry Hadley to fame. Superior singing and a lovely, insightful interpretation.
Bravo.
Magnifique!
Marvelous!
WOW!
Bravissimo!!!
Bravissimo Jerry! How we miss you!
Bravo 👏
Wielki talent. Szkoda, że odszedłeś. Spoczywaj w Pokoju.
Brilliant
THANK YOU SO MUCH for readding this video. Bravo!
Thanks, MrCafiero.
So very true. It is also the case that many people have terrible reactions to the prescriptions for depression. It can make them worse or have other medical issues which makes them more upset. It is a very sad and serious disease.
Crying! A lot!!
Future phantom, why are u commenting on Kaufman after such beauty here???
Effortless and Crystal clear!
He was great up to about 1993, sometimes in 1994 and it was downhill from there. For shame.
A real tenor!!! Sweet, thrilling and captivating!!! NOT a barking bari-tenor.
He sings so clean and wonderfully! I miss him. Why was he never given the chance to release a program of tenor arias? I only have his cd of musical theatre songs, Standing Room Only, which I love! Was someone coughing in the audience?! Really?!! Lol!
He did release a very fine recording of bel canto arias with Richard Bonynge that is still available.
When was this recorded?
@MrCafiero It would seem to me that he uses a techinique similar to Gigli's, am I right?
He was a very fine singer. I love all of the wanna be's he voice was small. Let's see you stand and deliver .
Do people actually say that his voice was small? lol That is funny. It was bigger than Pavarotti and Kraus.
Silver Singing Method Krause was a tremendous Tenor !!
What does that have to do with size?
Silver Singing Method everything.?if you support your voice properly , you can be heard no matter how large the house .
My comment was about you saying people say Hadley had a small voice. He didn't. Anything else was not what was I was discussing.
Luigi Alva, Aureliano Pertile, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Jerry Hadley
neil shicoff too,
Tagliavini Gigli Schipa Bjorling Aragall .
Such brilliant talent cut short by suicide. So sad.
Very true. At least he would have been a great coach if nothing else.
No amplification.
Was this sung without any type of amplication?
Thank you !!! I love this tenor !! Do you know the name of the Sicilian teacher ???
Jerry's teacher was Thomas Lomonaco, thomas was also the mentor of my current teacher. A stunning dramatic tenor and excellent teacher.
Mrcafiero, the owner of this channel, is my teacher
jacob lahr I heard his. Brother Jerome La Monaco sing years ago ! He was a tenor also.
ROFL! With enhancement and mics....right...he is better. Thick, woofy. Wow. some people just cannot hear I guess.
Gonna have to disagree with you there, but hey, to each their own, right?
Had Hadley lived, would he had become a good vocal coach?
That depends, many really great singers cannot be great teachers, same thin in sport! My opinion, but this that not mean that his was not a really outstanding tenor, among the greatest!!!
@@Mr19841504 I'm in two minds about this.
On one hand, his relationship with Tom LoMonaco, his interview where he talked about vocal pedagogy, his own showing of good technique and his reluctant to change it (he only changed the technique because he was forced to, he returned to his old self whenever he could) suggests that he might have been a good teacher.
On the other hand, great singer might not be good teacher. He might not be able to understand what LoMonaco taught, or he might not be able to teach it because he might not know how to communicate effectively.
I still think that he could have been a good teacher. Oh well...
Before he began his operatic career he was adjunct prof of music at University of Connecticut. He gave many master classes after. He could easily chosen that path.
Piccolo you are FOS.... kaufmann with his macs. Just ridiculous.
A lot of mouth resonance and white vowels. Tongue is in some reverse tension. This voice will not last.
It’s not bad, but it’s very American Broadway.
Chad Guindon, Esq., You must be stone deaf, not only tone deaf.
No nice sound and tries to copy others, those who has talent to mke music, this is like he is very glad with himself and showing it, I am sorry!
I'm sorry but he doesn't sound like a true Opera singer. His voice sounds somewhat non-classical!!!!!!!!
OK, tell me someone that has a true opera sound?
Does he not sound like a true opera singer because he is following the music, singing with feeling and hitting all the notes correctly? What's not classical about him? Certainly the audience is in true appreciation of Hadley's efforts
Chad Guindon Hadley has a beautiful lyric voice without the typical operatic affect; instead it is a clean, lovely, expressive voice with exceptional diction. Who can ask for anything more?
+Chad Guindon he sounds totally classical!
+Chad Guindon: I'm sorry, but you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. This is free, open, ringing and gorgeous.
