During Johnnie's latest visit to Japan he was lucky enough to be the first journalist who was allowed to independently film at SIGMA’s Art and cinema zoom lenses production line. Hope you will enjoy this short video, as he was trying to make you guys feel as if you were visiting the factory together with him.

Almost brought tears to my eyes. The passion that this company has since day one lets me know that as a filmmaker I need to thank and pray for these visionaries (Founder, the employees, engineers, etc) every time I pick up my camera, lenses and all other gear, and film and wrap my shoot. To also dedicate my results to those soles. Its a spiritual journey!

As hobbiest photographer, I have a sigma lens and I just love it. The build quality and all. Now as a Lean engineer, wow loved the factory the process, the visual color (the blue part) the managing style and the warmth....
I dont doubt that this company will keep growing!

I have always been a person who marched to a different drummer, and I have always had the feeling that the Sigma FAMILY also did. I have been a photographer for almost fifty years, but for about fifteen years I was an optics maker. It was a definite thrill watching this tour of the Sigma plant as I was able to watch the employees doing many of the operations that I was involved in--from generating the curves on the glass blanks to the pitch polishing of the lenses. From what I have heard, optical fabrication is far more automated than it was when I was doing it--taking the art out of lens making. Sigma hasn't succumbed to total automation-- and the results show it. When I first held a Sigma lens in my hands, I could tell that it was mad by people who really cared--the smooth focus and zoom felt so good. Thank you everyone in the Sigma family!!!

Caught myself nodding to the statement that giving the "fresh generation" an insight in how old and/or manual machines work is smart. It's a well founded concept from LEAN/Knowledge management theory, which the Japanese originally more or less invented. Another reason to buy Sigma products for me!

Although knowing of their existence for years, I never bought Sigma lenses until I caught my eye on a black 60mm f/2.8 DN ART for MFT. The lens is a mouth-watering beauty. It has an iridescent look to it that pictures cannot capture. I really was taken away by its luxurious look. It's not as obscenely sharp as my Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH., but it has great colors and sharpness. After such a great first impression, I have Sigma in high regard and will continue to buy their lenses. God bless!

Pretty cool teaser. I would love to have an in-depth look at the creation of a premium lens, from design to manufacturing architecture, to actual build-out, to packaging, shipping, marketing, etc. It would be fascinating, especially for Sigma, to explain how they work the different mounts and firmwares into the same optical formulae.

These tours are really interesting. The atmosphere is quite nice from what you showed.
For such a big company there seems to be a lot of handcraft in the production. But this isn't the factory where all Sigma lense are made, right?
Have you been to smaller factories where bets high end optics are getting manufactured? Like Jena or Wetzlar?

    • @CineD

When Nikon, Canon, and most of the other lens manufacturers moved most of their manufacturing overseas to save costs, Sigma wanted to keep their manufacturing in Japan, so they went the other way and made more premium products. And that's how we've ended up with the beautiful lenses such as the Art and Cine lines today. As Johnnie said, all Sigma lenses are made there.

I use Canon "L" series lenses on my Canon 5D Mk IV. After all the buzz on the Art lenses I went ahead and purchased the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM. I loved it. Now I'm even willing to trade my Canon 24-70mm F 2.8 for a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art Lens . Sigma has now matched Canon in lens quality. The black finish on the lens body is quite unique far better than Canon.
