    one thing i have always loved about service vehicles and indeed with aircraft - you don't just find a little service history, making contact with ex service personnel can open up all kinds of avenues, even finding pre digital photographs
    with some aircraft i have worked on, its been a real pleasure to see pilots log books, seeing what they did with the aircraft they flew, even a Harrier i know of now in Australia that actually tried to kill the pilot after an engine quit on him - i've met folk who flew, engineers who worked on them telling many tales and those who actually built parts of them - even as a kid in the air cadets i been able to find images of aircraft i flew in, long since been out of service, in civil hands including museums or sadly no more, scrapped - its fantastic to make that personal connection and worth so much more when you can pass on the stories
    amazing to see the snaps you shared with us, i trust all of these boys are well and returned home

    Id do the Cummins diesel conversion on it .
    It'd also be worth doing the paperwork to have a live firing gun.
    It's great it's almost complete too.

    I've just bought 72GJ27, a Land Rover 101 ambulance that served in Operation Granby with the 28 Transport Squadron Gurkha Regiment.
    It wants a hell of a lot less doing to it to get it running than your Scorpion.

      You can try. Although I’m not sure how much he would want. Search on the web for helston gunsmiths and then you will see his website has a scorpion section. Most of the remaining hulls are well stripped out but there may well be some turret traverse gearboxes still in them. Mine is seized solid which I have not got around to yet !

    Great find Ben. One of the most characterful British armoured vehicles out there (along with its Scimitar brother). Love to see how this turns out.
    Interesting about the breach. I don't know where I got this from but I was under the impression that guns of that sort (artillery, tank guns) etc don't need to be deactivated in the same as small arms to be legal?

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  2 роки тому +2

      Cheers, it’s certainly going to be a project ! I think the requirements even for large calibre guns is similar. It already had the breech door missing but that wasn’t enough. He wasn’t going to let me take it unless either the whole gun was out or the breach ring was removed so I persuaded him to let me at least keep the original barrel !

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  Рік тому +1

      Getting there. I have a new recon engine, gearbox and almost all the missing bins etc including the turret boxes.
      I have the turret off and cleaned all the hull out. I have the tracks off and managed to get hold of a complete set of road wheels to replace those rotten ones.
      Just waiting on some dry weather for sandblasting and painting as the cow shed I store it in is a bit open to the elements on the sides but does keep the majority of rain off.

      Sorry but I also work full time so it difficult fitting everything in.
      As an update for you, the scorpion has the turret and tracks off with the hull all cleaned out ready for sandblasting now the dry weather has arrived.
      The Abbot is now ready for the road, I have just done my H license so I can drive that legally on the road and that just needs the last finishing touch ups like the stickers, number plates, mirrors and mud flaps .
      The Stalwart is fully running, painted and looking great. Top hatches are on and many of the extras but I need to re manufacture the swimming gear controls so that I can steer it once we take it in the water.
      I will do videos of several of these when I get a chance so don’t forget to subscribe. Cheers for your interest. Ben
