I love how you give Cali loves when she's close to you. She's a beautiful girl. Its obvious how much you love her. Most guys think thy have to act hard and uncaring but you're real and true to yourself. Thank you. I love watching your channel, gives me some wonderful ideas.

Shawn, a huge shout out to whoever grooms Cali. She's an exquisite creature, so patient and loyal. She blends into her surroundings beautifully. You forgot to say goodnight to us. I could watch you work to my heart's content. It's coming along grand now. Well done, you!

haha...I love the way Cali keeps photo-bombing you with her throw toy. It reminds me of when I was out cutting wood and my dog had her frisbee. I sawed through half a log, threw the frisbee, sawed through the other half, threw the frisbee again.... happy days they were.

Shawn, your audio is always so on point. No annoying music, just straight construction and nature sounds. It's always so peaceful, and it always sounds like the microphone is right next to the action, like we're there too. I love it.

I purchased a remote waterfront piece of land in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a while back. Paid cash also. The recession also knocked me for a loop and I almost sold the place! I recently broke ground on my cabin and also paying out of pocket (no loans) while doing the building myself. It's been a long slow process but worth every ounce of effort! Michigan has much stricter building laws and codes, unfortunately. Your videos are a great inspiration for me, Shawn! Very impressed with your style of construction and calm, wise demeanor when narrating! Always look forward to your videos...keep doing what you do!

Just picked up your channel a week ago, and not only has it changed my perspective on outdoor living, but I’d say that it changed my life to a degree. Living in Chicago makes it hard to experience nature, and I generally never had an interest in outdoor/ off grid living until I found your channel. Your channel has made me conscious of what I’m eating. I’ve also made an effort to walk outside. I frequent trips along the lakeshore and through smaller parks around the area. Of course, I’m no where near the level of isolation and connection to the elements you are as I live in the heart of the metro, but I’ve felt a lot better since I’ve made those changes. Your insight, thoughts, and ideas are always a joy to watch.
    Keep up the great work!

Thank Shawn for your thoughts on the meaning of off grid. Social media has really taken us backwards as far as terminology goes. We run these terms into the ground and there meanings loose there integrity. Terms like organic, homesteading, off grid, thruhiking, etc. To make it worse, some of us take it personal and go on the defense / offense in these comment section. I have done it and it hasn't sat well with me which I guess is a good thing. Your self reflections have really hit home on many occasions, keep it up Shawn cause I really appreciate it. Thanks

I don't have the words to express how much I loved Cali in this video. But you know, Shawn; you get to experience it. Always nearby- maybe even underfoot. Always wanting to play- maybe even annoyingly so. It's that special, special bond that only dog owners get to experience, but yet still have such a hard time describing. We wouldn't trade it for the world! Fantastic video! When she's long gone, THIS is one you'll want to come back and watch. I have several videos like that with my old girl. Keep it up!

  • @larsfrandsen2501

When ever I watch your videos, Shawn, I ask myself, “what am I doing in life and to what end.” Well, I provide. That’s good enough for most days.
But the reminder never to take anything for granted, to genuinely feel the purpose and struggle of even the most mundane tasks (food, shelter), that is something few of us experience on a daily basis. Your videos awaken in me something essential about life and I thank you from the pit of my soul for that reminder.
A practical comment about the off-grid discussion. I watched a professionally trained carpenter in another ‘off-grid’ themed channel making doors for his house with power tools, run by a generator. He was obviously skilled at carpentry and his doors came out looking like they had just been picked up from a commercial outlet. Some people admire that, and I have nothing bad to say about him. I am not sure, however, that I would personally consider such an approach ‘off-grid.’ At the end of the day, there probably isn’t such a thing as truly ‘off-grid.’ We still use medical facilities and modern conveniences (heck, we are all having this discussion on an electronic media platform!) But I believe the best thing to do is to be honest about it (like you are, Shawn) and make it work for us on which ever level we can. Some of us get to experience ‘grid removal’ as weekend warriors, others are able to more fully engage. It is not an ‘all-or-nothing’ scenario, to my way of thinking.

I for one appreciate everything you do on your property. Its yours, something hardly any of us will ever experience. Your dependency on the grid is nominal and so small it seems impossible to most people. Jealous people pick at the details. My wife and I purchased some land in southern Idaho, with the idea of retiring to a simpler way of living. The first thing most people say or ask is do you plan on going off grid. The simplest answer is , as much as is humanly possible. As grandparents of a bunch of kids, we know that our lives will always require some attachments to society. You could live like a hermit. And forsake all contact with the world. But who wants to be miserable. The option to just survive, with your witts is the thing we prepare for, but hope is never a necessity. Thank you for being my stress reducer. I love what you are doing. And am jealous of your progress through a cold winter. See you next week.

Impressive - and meaningful. Consider building Cali a small log leanto, say 12" above the ground, placed just outside the door, maybe to the right of your bench; sun for winter warmth and shelter from rain when she's out. And you can see inside the leanto through the window. Can also be used for storage of Cali's toys and a water dish. Just a thought. Your vids are among the finest on UA-cam.

So very much enjoyed your thoughts on " off grid" . Many of the channels not only accuse others of not being off grid and some have taken it as far as saying others are " playing at homesteading". I watch to learn things, not to listen to others tell someone what is wrong with their ways of doing things. I appreciate your discussions being straight forward and leaving the pettiness out. Thank you so very much for your channel.

FWIW, I have a small solar system in my travel trailer---235W single module, a charge controller, and 300AH of battery capacity. It runs everything inside the trailer including a 120V fridge, as long as the sun shines every other day. Even on days that are overcast, I do get some charge back into the batteries. I'd suggest to keep it simple and keep upgrading in mind. I found that once everything was installed correctly, the solar system runs by itself. I am on year six (6) with my 6V batteries and anticipate 10 years of life.

A month ago I did the same project as you, but as an axe block, to carve spoons. Something I learned was, if you use the auger to scribe a circle on the end of the leg, it takes the guess work out of carving the tenon to size. It doesn't apply so much for you, who isn't sawing on a flat surface, but a three legged version doesn't require leveling. I really enjoy your videos, living in the U.K. building a cabin would be harder than winning the lottery, but I can live the experience vicariously through you.

Once the weather breaks and you are able to start a garden and in the warmer months do more hunting and fishing you’ll feel more off-grid than right now. There are so many channels of "off grid" living...Those channels have over a hundred thousand subscribers and still going strong. In order to bring your videos and, others, to the front for entertainment they need to be recorded and uploaded. The people that disagree about those being off grid will never find the one perfect off grid channel or video as it can not be done without some kind of technology.
There is always going to be people who feel their way is the right and only way. I feel you're doing great!

Off grid on grid . Semantics . I think what matters most is being responsible for your own life freedom and happiness , and I think the less you have to rely on anyone for that, the happier you will be.
Thanks again , Shawn, for the endless inspiration. You have made a big impact in my life for the better. 2 years ago I was so sick and heavy(500lbs!) I could barely walk. I lived with my parents after having walked away from my former life, which wasn’t much better as I was dying. Now I’ve lost almost 200 lbs and I live on my own land in my own home. He lived around the corner and was that nice that he even let the cats sleep in his dog house with him when it was cold or raining. On the back door there was an oversized cat door so he was able to go inside whenever he wanted to, but he always stayed outside no matter how bad the weather was because he wanted to greet everyone passing by.

Your damned if you do and damned if you don’t! People never seem to be satisfied. Keep doing what you love and the rest can go fly a kite. 😁

ciao! we ( my husband and I)are following you from Italy and , even if we can't understand everything you say at the end of your videos we like your experience and life in the cabin, so different from italian way of life and culture. when we see you cooking, we have fun watching your appetizing recipes full of spices. we have seen almost all your videos we found casually and we are curious to know how you have solved the problem of the entry and discharge of the water in your beautiful copper sink( perhaps we lost one video) waiting for your next video we say "ciao ciao" . (we are happy to see that for your coffee you use a real italian moka!!!) Lilli e Vince
