I solved the 12/28/2024 New York Times Mini Crossword in 6:50! Wordle 1,289 6/6 ⬛🟨⬛⬛⬛honor ⬛⬛🟨⬛⬛stout ⬛⬛⬛🟨⬛decoy ⬛🟩⬛⬛🟩radio ⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩jambo 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩mambo Mambo #6 💃 Connections Puzzle #567 🟨🟨🟨🟨red 🟦🟦🟦🟦hair 🟩🟩🟩🟩appointment elements 🟪🟪🟪🟪 tree homophones Strands #301 “Festival of Lights delights” 🟡🔵🔵🔵 🔵🔵 I had to guess the last one on the lower right.
I also started off Strands by looking for Chanukah, which turned out to be a bit of a problem because I wasn't sure what the official spelling was, nothing I tried seemed to click, and when I gave up & tried looking up the spelling, I found a list of 16 different ways to spell "Hanukkah"! The first two (which I've used here) were listed as haven gotten 8,470,000 hits and 3,390,000 hits respectively from an internet search, after that the hit totals for the other 14 drop off dramatically. There were only two or three variants that seemed to fit anywhere in the puzzle, the one that turned out to be the "right" spelling was listed fourth with 677,000 hits, pretty fringe when compared to the top two, but here's the thing: If you traced out & tried to enter "Hannukah" without the "Foods" after it, it comes back as "Not in the word list"! So there's NO spelling of "Chanuqa" (variant #16, with only 25 hits) on the board that the game would even accept as a word by itself! This kinda made finding the Spanagram literally impossible, I thought. And since the only other things about Channukah (variant #8, 128,000 hits) that came to my mind were Menorah and Dreidel (I don't even see the point of checking the spelling of those, based on recent experience), which were definitely not in the puzzle, I was pretty much hopeless on this one. (although I did happen to find "Applesauce", which only added to my confusion).
@@ADailySliceOfOranje The New York City metropolitan area, where I live, has the largest Jewish population in the United States (over two million.) That's out of about 7.5 million in the entire country. So it's understandable that Hanukkah would be on the minds of folks at a New York newspaper. Admittedly, New Yorkers would have an advantage solving today's Strands, but it wouldn't be the first time a theme in Strands or Connections was skewed toward a narrow demographic.
Because I dont know my Jewish foods, I did not do well in Strands. I was OK in Wordle and Connections. You did very well on my puzzle, Oranje. Hanukkah, Hannukah or Chanukah are all acceptable (and there are probably more.) There is no English equivalent for the Hebrew consonant at the start of the word, which probably accounts for the variations in spelling. It's kind of a guttural "H" sound that can best be described as a little like the sound of clearing your throat.
You stumped me again, Chazz...another fail. I never heard of brown snakes, although I did get that category eventually by guessing.
